The beginning of summer in Japan is called shoka, and it starts in June. During shoka, there are days where experience sweltering heat just like in summer. But there are also days when it rains after the sun has set, providing a brief respite of refreshing cool air.

MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON has compiled a list of J-pop songs that are perfect for listening to during summertime.

Wienners – Souten Delight

This pop hit has a seriously catchy and infectious melody line! Its four-rhythm, floor stomping beat is perfect when getting pumped for the arrival of summer.

Siamese Cats – Nagisa

This surf tune encapsulates the shimmer of summer. It’s refreshing and also a little poignant.

Sukima Switch – Guarana　

The peak of adolescence! When you hear this song drop, it fills you up with a feeling that makes you want to just start running.

w-inds./Backstage

This song was released last year and was influenced by the tropical house genre. The music video is really refreshing and uplifting too.

μ’s – Natsu Iro Egao de 1,2,Jump!

A track just bursting with summer vibes. It’s a little different from the anime version too, so have fun with it.

RIP SLIME – Lovely

This song is a collaboration between RIP SLIME and Quruli. A love song with an easy-going tempo.

AKB – Ponytail to Shushu

The sparkling ocean and sky are gorgeous in this video. And don’t forget about the AKB members dancing in swimsuits too.

ONIGAWARA – Tank Top wa Niawanai

This track was used in a commercial for Google Play Music last year. The melody is very much pop, and the lyrics are impactful!

Natsume Mito – Odekake Summer

Natsume Mito’s music is produced by Yasutaka Nakata, the producer of artists such as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Perfume. The melody for this song is feelgood, and no matter how many times you listen to it, you’re sure to go back for another!
