Sailor Moon & My Melody Candy Parlour Opens in Fukuoka PARCO for a Limited Time

The Sailor Moon and My Melody collaborative café Sailor Moon×My Melody Candy Parlour opened for a limited period of time in Osaka, Sapporo, Tokyo and Nagoya and proved very popular. The Tokyo and and Nagoya branches are still open until May 21.

 

Another branch was recently opened in Fukuoka PARCO on May 11 and will run until June 25.

This is a cute doughnut-style burger with Sailor Moon and My Melody bobbing their heads up. My Melody‘s food burger has avocado in it while Sailor Moon‘s snack burger has berries. The place comes with cupcake-style mashed potatoes that complement the dish.

    Mirume Shinryoku Sabo is the newest cafe to be opened by Shinryoku Sabo, an award-winning tea company in Mie Prefecture. The cafe’s tea experience includes using a kyuusu, which is a type of small teapot, to brew Isecha green tea. Customers can learn the best way to prepare tea from an in-house instructor of Japanese tea, who will also provide backstory on the tea leaves used. Their deliciously brewed cup can be paired with a variety of desserts like daifuku, maju, cheesecake, and more.

     

    The cafe also sells the “Morning Bottle,” its signature bottled cold-brew tea which is prepared on the day in the early morning. Bottles can be returned to the cafe to be reused, allowing for no waste. Since the tea is cold-brewed, it also contains little caffeine.

  • Retro Looking Tram Turns Into Cafe in Fukuoka’s City of Omuta

    Tram No. 204, a tram that used to run in the city of Omuta, Fukuoka, has been placed in front of the west entrance of Omuta Station as a symbol and turned into ‘hara harmony coffee,’ a new cafe.

    hara harmony coffee serves coffee, fruit sandwiches, and other items from Coffee Salon Hara, a now-closed cafe that was loved by the people of Omuta for many years. They will also introduce alcohol to the menu as well as a night-time service in the near future. The cafe even sells souvenirs.

    Architecture Cafe Sumika aim sto be a cosy space for architecture lovers who can enjoy thinking about their ideal home, talking about their favourite architect, and thinking about how architecture changes with the times. The cafe has recreated 12 architectural marvels from 12 different renowned architects, each at which sits at a different table.

     

    The cafe, which is located in Shinjuku Sanchome, employs a spacious cafe area with high ceilings that can be enjoyed by both lovers of architects and cafe enthusiasts where they can relax with a cup of tea, coffee, a soft drink, or even alcohol, the latter of which is served at bar hours from 18:00, completely changing the atmosphere into a night museum. There’s also a tasty food menu to tuck into.

     

    If you’re looking to speak to someone about architecture and real estate, Architecture Cafe Sumika also houses its own resident experts. Customers can also enjoy a range of other works by architects and interior designers.

     

    In celebration of the cafe’s opening, a competition is being held to create a jungle gym for children where entrees can win cash prizes, the top being ¥300,000. More details below.

  • Umbrella Installation Decorates Cafe in Chiba

    This cafe will keep your dry while you enjoy your coffee as it brings together the Japanese rainwear brand Wpc. and community space Tsubakimori Komuna with the limited-time cafe Wrapping komuna ~blooming~ which is now running until the end of May.

     

    Tsubakimori Komuna first opened five years ago and recently received huge renovation work, reopening in January of this year. Wrapping komuna ~blooming~ sees the return of the colourful umbrella installation which was featured as part of its reopning.

    The theme of the installation is “blooming” and features six different colours of umbrella representing different drinks such as strawberry milk, ramune, and soda. The umbrellas twinkle as the light filters through the trees at different angles, creating a gorgeous atmosphere at the cafe which itself is built like a treehouse.

  • New Doraemon and Korosuke Dessert Gets Served at the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum

    The Kawasaki-based Fujiko F. Fujio Museum, which is dedicated to the Japanese manga writing duo who created Doraemon, is now serving up its new Doraemon Korosuke Chiffon Sandwich which was added to the menu on Wednesday.

    The new arrival sees Doraemon and Korosuke turned into chiffon sandwiches with the beloved blue robot cat made from chocolate and filled with banana cream and his friend filled with mango cream.

  • From Hello Kitty to Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, and more – Sanrio’s internationally adored cast of characters can be universally agreed to be representatives of Japan culture of ‘kawaii.’ In celebration of Sanrio’s 60th anniversary, the company have announced an exhibition centred on the beginning of kawaii culture. The event will take place at TOKYO CITY VIEW from September 17, 2021 to January 10, 2022.

     

    60th Anniversary Sanrio Exhibition: The Beginning of Kawaii is currently taking place at Matsuzakaya Art Gallery in Nagoya until June 12 and will move to Ōita Prefectural Art Museum where it will run from July 10 to September 5 before heading to TOKYO CITY VIEW.

    This exhibition will not only look back over Sanrio’s 60-year history, but will also dive into how Japan’s culture of ‘kawaii’ came about. Fans of Sanrio and Japan’s kawaii can expect product and design showcases, in-depth explanations, and more.

     

    Over 800 products, documents, and materials related to Sanrio will be presented, many of which will shine a spotlight on some of their most famous characters out of their roster of 400, such as Hello Kitty and My Melody, and other characters that might not be known to those outside Japan such as best friends Patty & Jimmy.

    Unforgettable Tower by Sebastian Masuda

    Sebastian Masuda, a pioneer of kawaii culture, will showcase his symbolic art pieces at the event at TOKYO CITY VIEW’s observation deck, combining his iconic work against a breathtaking background.

     

    The Beginning of Kawaii

    Learn about the history of Sanrio’s culture of kawaii, beginning as a service to ‘move people’s hearts’ through gifts and products. Visitors will get a chance to see the secrets of Sanrio’s iconic style which draw a line under fancy products from other companies.

     

    There will also be a chance to see Japanese illustrators Takashi Yanase, Ado Mizumori, and Rune Naito’s work with Sanrio.

     

    The Birth of the Characters

    What makes something kawaii or not kawaii? Why do characters not necessarily need to have a story to become so popular? These questions are more will be answered as the exhibition looks at the birth of Sanrio’s characters.

    How did their hit characters come to be? During the 1980’s, Japan was a warzone for characters. Sanrio changed how characters became popular, moving from characters that were popular with everyone to creating characters that people wanted for themselves – their own personal characters. Discover how Sanrio’s long list of characters came about, including ones that have stood the test of time and ones that have declined in popularity.

     

    Ichigo Shimbun

    Ichigo Shimbun is a magazine published by Sanrio all about Sanrio and their characters – a familiar read to all fans in Japan. The magazine will be featured at the exhibition.

     

    Hello Kitty: The Character Who Turned Into a Global Icon

    Hello Kitty is known the world over, with even Lady Gaga having worn a dress of Hello Kitty plush toys in the past. This dress will be exhibited at the event, amongst many other things related to Sanrio’s global idol.

     

    A Battle Between Artists

    Artists from various artistic background will participate in the exhibition by creating a range of different Sanrio works. Participating artists and their specialities include Ryūsuke Fukahori (objects), Hajime Nakatomi (bamboo art), Takaya Mori (sculptor), Mio Hashimoto (sculptor), and Risa Fukui (paper cut-outs).

  • GENDA SEGA Entertainment is set to open a themed cafe in collaboration with Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club on April 29, 2021.

  • Enjoy a Healthy Junk Food Menu at Shibuya LOFT’s New Cafe 2foods

    Shibuya LOFT opened its new ‘2foods’ cafe on April 15 which serves junk food healthily.

     

    2foods uses absolutely no eggs or milk in their menu – everything is plant based and healthy, making it a haven for vegan foodies, especially in Japan where there aren’t as many vegan places as other countries. What’s better is that everything’s reasonably priced too. There are around 60 menu items to choose from, like curry and soba as well as desserts, organic coffees and lattes, cold pressed juice, and more.

  • Akihabara’s premiere maid café chain “@home café” announced last month the opening of a permanent maid café themed on Sanrio’s popular character Pompompurin. The café is set to open along Harajuku’s famous Takeshita Street on April 14, 2021.

    @home café has collaborated with many of Sanrio’s popular characters in the past at its Akihabara-based café branches such as Hello Kitty, My Melody, Cinnamoroll, and of course Pompompurin, but this time the collaboration is flying out of Akiba and straight into the heart of Japanese pop culture: Harajuku.

     

    This new Pompompurin Café is themed on Pompompurin throwing a party for everyone—that’s you and your friends. It’s a place for Purin to deliver happiness to all who visit in the form of cute and tasty food.

     

    Of course, the @home café maids will also be present, and all wearing original maid uniforms coloured like Pompompurin.
