Roll Ice Cream Factory was the first shop in Japan serving ‘roll’ ice cream. Their fourth branch will open in Nagoya on June 28.
There are constant lines to get inside the shop in Harajuku, and Nagoya is about to be hit with its popularity too. As part of an opening campaign, the new shop is giving out original merchandise of their mascot Kuru Kuru Ice no Shiro-kun to the first 100 people to arrive on the day of the opening.
The main branch first opened in Omotesando, Harajuku in June 2017. Since then, it has become a spot serving up ‘Instagrammable’ desserts, with people fighting to get a spot in line. Two other branches have opened since then: one in Dotonbori, Osaka in December 17 and one in AeonSakai Kitahanada in March 2018. The fourth will open in LACHIC, a shopping center in Nagoya.
It’s already been a year since the chain was established, and the buzz hasn’t died down yet. You can be waiting up to 5 hours at the very max to get in there. That’s how popular it is. Their desserts look cute and taste delicious and are popular not only with Harajuku’s female youth, but parents and children, families and foreign tourists too.
‘Roll’ ice cream is made by spreading a thin layer of ice cream over a cold plate and scooping it into a roll shape. There are many videos on YouTube and elsewhere showing how it’s done.
Part of the shop’s popularity is that you’re free to arrange your ice ream as you like. They have a recommended menu that combines recommended sauces and toppings, or you can freely select from your own, as well as sweets and fruits. You’re promised to have the chance to make the most original roll ice cream in the world.
The stores are rolling through Japan, with a new one opening in Nagoya. Be sure you make time to try it.
