Starbucks Japan Osaka Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Meccha Matcha Latte & Frappuccino

06.November.2018 | FOOD

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Starbucks Japan setting up shop in Osaka, the coffee chain is holding a 10-day event titled Osaka 20th Thanks Week at 105 branches across Osaka Prefecture.

The celebration will see community activities taking place at each branch along with the serving of the new Osaka Meccha Matcha Latte and Osaka Meccha Matcha Frappuccino, two beverages crafted by the Osakan baristas of Starbucks for the Osakan locals.

The first Starbucks branch to open in Western Japan was at HEP FIVE in Umeda, Osaka on November 28, 1998. The keyword for these beverages is omoroi, a word in Kansai dialect that means ‘interesting’ and ‘amusing,’ and one that is intended to warm the hearts of those who drink these new beverages. Matcha is used as the base flavour for both of these drinks. It should also tickle the fancy of those who know that Osaka was the birthplace of Sen no Rikyū, one of the most influential figures on the Japanese way of tea.

The three matcha beverages―the hot or iced latte and frappuccino―uses 1.5 times more matcha powder than Starbucks’ regular matcha drinks. This explains the meccha in the title of the beverages which in Japanese means ‘very’ or in this case ‘a lot.’

Osaka Meccha Matcha Frappuccino®: Short ¥550/Tall ¥590/Grande ¥630/Venti® ¥670 (Pre-Tax)

The base of the Osaka Meccha Matcha Frappuccino® is refreshing vanilla ice cream on top of which sits colourful matcha, creating a contrast of white and green. Squirted on top is a fluffy serving of whipped cream drizzled in caramel sauce, chocolate sauce and extra matcha powder. Not only is this beverage made to look like Osaka Castle’s main keep, it’s also made to reflect the vim and vigour of the Osakan spirit that always wants to try “this and that.”

Osaka Meccha Matcha Latte (Hot/Iced): Short ¥440/Tall ¥480/Grande ¥520/Venti® ¥560 (Pre-Tax)

The iced version of the Osaka Meccha Matcha Latte is based on the popular matcha tea latte while the hot version is the perfect accompaniment to warm you up during the cold season.

If you’re in Osaka later this month then be sure to enjoy these meccha matcha drinks conceived from the minds of the baristas of Osaka!

  • Kyoto’s Sweet and Salty Matcha Cheese Tea is an Enlightening Flavour Discovery

    15.August.2019 | FOOD

Kiyomizu Cheese Kobo opened at Kiyomizu Gojozaka at the foot of the famous Kiyomizudera Temple as Kyoto’s first ever cheesecake shop to sell its delicious cheesecakes in a cute jar. On August 13, they released a mouthwateringly rich Matcha Cheese Tea which will enlighten you with a new way to enjoy matcha.

The Matcha Cheese Tea harnesses Kyoto’s unbeatable Uji matcha which is full of rich and fresh flavour. A light cloud of fluffy cheese foam floats on top of the drink, adding a salty accent to the overall flavour. A traditional tea combined with a sweet and salty cheese flavour ー this brand new flavour discovery will leave you feeling refreshed and enlightened. The recipe for the cheese foam consists of cream cheese carefully selected by the cheesecake shop’s specialists. This is then blended with a small amount of salt to accent the flavour.

If you mix the matcha milk tea with the cheese foam, the rich matcha mixes with the saltiness of the cream cheese, creating a sweet salty flavour that you will not be able to get enough of. As the flavour is not too overpowering, you can enjoy this drink endlessly and will feel refreshed even on a hot summer’s day.

    Matcha Cheese Tea: ¥460

Kiyomizu Cheese Kobo recommends three different ways to drink the Matcha Cheese Tea to enjoy three different levels of flavour combinations.

① First off, drink just the matcha milk tea so you can experience the true authentic flavour of Kyoto’s famous rich Uji matcha tea.

② Next, move your straw so that you taste just the cheese foam on its own. The fluffy foam will gently slide over your tongue and spread a mild and sweet flavour all over your mouth.

③ Finally, it’s time to mix everything. The saltiness of the cheese foam and the sweetness of the matcha milk will create a new salty sweet flavour that you will want to try again and again.

Whether you are a Japanese local or a foreigner, this drink is a fun new way to enjoy matcha. If you are new to matcha, this is a good way to try the flavour without being too overwhelmed.

  • Sold Out On Day One―Itohkyuemon’s Matcha Parfait Bars Release at Gion Shijo Store

    10.August.2019 | FOOD

Kyoto-based Uji tea store Itohkyuemon released its new Matcha Parfait Bars at its new branch in Gion Shijo on August 7.

The bars proved so popular that all 1,500 in stock sold out on the first day. The store is currently being piled with orders for future sales. There are five flavours to enjoy: the classic matcha parfait flavour as well as cherry blossom, tropical, mont blanc, and strawberry.

    Matcha Parfait Bar – Matcha

The matcha flavoured bar retains the original rich flavour of the Uji matcha, which has been passed down since the Muromachi period, and combines it with a delicious assortment of parfait toppings including raw matcha chocolate, mini daifuku, coarse sweet red bean paste, and more.

Matcha Parfait Bar – Sakura (Cherry Blossom)

For another traditional Japanese twist there is the springtime sakura parfait bar which is made with cherry blossom pink rice flour dumplings and ice cream. It’s also topped with cherry blossom cream and salted cherry blossom petals for a cute finish.

    Matcha Parfait Bar – Tropical

Tropical flavours like pineapple and mango blend together in this bar which is drizzled in a sweet, sour and refreshing tropical sauce. Topped with fresh tropical fruits, this is the ultimate summertime luxury.

Matcha Parfait Bar – Mont Blanc

This bar incorporates a sense of autumn with its mix of candied chestnut, astringent chestnut skin, and melt-in-the-mouth mont blanc cream.

    Matcha Parfait Bar – Strawberry

Strawberry lovers will delight in the handmade strawberry sauce and strawberry meringue of this bar. The meringue elevates the sumptuous flavours of the parfait even more, including the fresh strawberry, raspberry and blueberry toppings which provide a sweet and sour kick.

Which of these Matcha Parfait Bars do you want to try the most?

  • Hello everyone! This is Midori from MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON.

Candy apples are the staple food of summer festivals. A crunchy candy coating and a sweet, fruity apple is such a divine combination. It can be quite difficult to find candy apples outside of festivals. That’s where Candy Apple steps in. This is a brand new shop on the block that specialises in candy apples!

This is located just a five-minute walk from Shibuya Station’s west exit. If you check out their saved Instagram story, you probably won’t get lost. During the weekdays and on Saturdays, this is an Italian restaurant called Buonappetito. On Sundays, when the restaurant is closed, it transforms into a candy apple shop.

    The shop interior is gorgeous.

    Plain: ¥600

I ordered the plain apple without wasting any time. This is much larger than what you would usually get at a festival. Although these are usually eaten by immediately sinking your teeth in and biting out a big chunk, you can cut your apple here and enjoy it at your own pace.

After taking your first bite, you will realise just how different this is to your normal candy apple. The apple is coated in a thin layer of candy, creating a delicious crunch. The apple is fresh, juicy and sweet. Some candy apples are made with mushy apples that are not fresh, however these apples are extremely fresh and delicious right to the last bite.

These candy apples are full of a variety of flavours.

    Cinnamon Sugar: ¥600

The apple with the dusting of beige-coloured powder is cinnamon-flavoured. The sweet cinnamon scent spreads everywhere as soon as you set it on the table. The sweet flavour of the apple and the fragrant cinnamon is a match made in heaven.

    Cocoa: ¥600

The apple covered in the brown powder is cocoa-flavoured. The slightly bitter flavour of the chocolate is a perfect match for the sweet apple. The colour contrast between the brown chocolate and white apple is also beautiful.

    Matcha: ¥600

The apple with the green powder is matcha as you may have already guessed! The flavouring of the Uji matcha used for this apple was carefully balanced to maximise the flavour when combined with the apple. After you take your first bite, you just won’t be able to stop.

    Blueberry Yoghurt: ¥600

The bright white dusting on this blueberry yoghurt-flavoured apple is beautiful. The blueberry scent is mild and is perfect with the yoghurt.

    Black Cocoa: ¥600

The pitch black colour of the Black Cocoa Candy Apple is very appetizing. The black cocoa is even more bitter than the cocoa apple, which really brings out the flavour of the sweet apple even more.

You can even get chocolate fondue for your candy apple (¥400). By adding the fairly bitter chocolate to your candy apple, you can enjoy three different kinds of sweetness when it mixes with the chocolate, candy and the apple.

You can even order your candy apple to go, making it the perfect summer souvenir. Taking it home to enjoy is also another wonderful way to make the most of your experience.

This candy apple shop is only open on Sundays, but you can order to take away on other days.

This is a flavour that a festival candy apple will never be capable of offering. You can tuck into your apple inside the beautiful shop, or take it home to enjoy at home at your own pace.

  • Sebastian Masuda And Other Phenomenal Artists Create Outstanding Doraemon Exhibition

    17.July.2019 | SPOT

28 artist groups and individuals have created artistic pieces to represent Japan’s favourite animated character Doraemon. From July 12 to September 23, 2019, you can see these magnificent creations at the Doraemon Exhibition Osaka 2019 which will take place at Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan.

The Doraemon Exhibition Osaka 2019 features a range of artists who exhibit their works in Japan and even in foreign countries. This is a fantastic chance to meet a range of new Doraemon that the world has never seen. This event covers a range of genres through modern art that is overflowing with creativity and dedication for the anime character that has grasped the nation.

On July 11, the day before the opening of the exhibition, there was a special opening ceremony and private viewing event held exclusively for staff and the press, which was a massive success.

Press releases of the event reveal that artists Yasumasa Morimura and Sebastian Masuda were present at the ceremony for photos and greetings.

Yasumasa Morimura commented with deep emotion: “I am so happy to have finally taken part in the Doraemon Exhibition. For this creation, I used lots of paper to make the costumes. I collaborated with Junko Koike, collecting lots of Doraemon manga as raw materials for the dress. As Doraemon has the power to manipulate time and space, and has the ability to create a door that leads to anywhere he desires, I thought a grey dress would be appropriate. In fact, the entire exhibition venue is just like the inside of Doraemon’s pocket ー it is packed with the work of 28 solo artists and groups. What a fun experience it is. I hope that many people in the Kansai region come see this,” he explained.

Sebastian Masuda commented: “I’m actually the same age as Doraemon and I share the same birthday as Noby; the main character from the series. I was born with a love for Doraemon.”

He then commented on his art piece: “I actually wanted to make it as big as the Budha statue at Todaiji Temple in Nara, but we wouldn’t be able to fit it in the venue so I made it two metres tall instead”, he laughed. “I collected materials from markets from all around the world, so the final piece is literally made up of the colours of the world,” he continued.

His message to the people of Osaka is: “I would love it if lots of children came to see this. It would really make my day to hear reactions from them like “whoa, it’s huge” or “that’s so cool!””

Please come stop by to visit your favourite Doraemon!

  • If you are wondering what Japan is particularly good at, matcha desserts is definitely one of them. However, you don’t have to go to a shop that specialises in matcha sweets to get your fill. Matcha desserts can be easily obtained from the convenience store and once you start, it is hard to stop.

Today, Instagrammer Yukko is going to introduce you to three delicious matcha desserts that you can get from Seven Eleven.

Dorayaki Pancakes Filled With Matcha Cream ¥278 (before tax)

Seven Eleven is always selling some kind of delicious matcha cream-filled dorayaki. This time, the name has been changed slightly. This dorayaki is just ¥3 more expensive than last time, however it looks just as good as it always has. You just will not be able to resist buying it.

As you take your first bite of this high-quality snack, the scent of the matcha will reach you first, followed by the flavour of the matcha which spreads instantly through your mouth. The matcha is rich yet so light that it will instantly melt on your tongue. The pancakes sandwiching the large creamy matcha filling are both fluffy and thick. Cut it in half and you will not be able to resist.

This is a wonderful snack to sink your teeth into while you walk. If you want to keep your hands clean, you could even use a spoon to scoop out the filling. Enjoy it in your own unique way as it is tasty no matter how you choose to enjoy it!

    Matcha and Matcha Parfait ¥278

As the name implies, this matcha parfait is the perfect opportunity to taste a variety of matcha flavours in one single tub. From the bottom, the cup is filled with matcha jelly, followed by matcha mousse, milk mousse and matcha whipped cream. Within the layers of matcha whipped cream you will discover a goldmine of matcha jelly and a dorayaki pancake core.

The matcha flavour of the jelly is quite weak, however its wobbly and springy texture contributes to the deliciousness of the parfait. The moderately sweet whipped cream combined with the matcha flavour is perfectly balanced. The milk mousse has a rich, milky flavour. It may be sweet, however the matcha mousse underneath it is slightly bitter, so enjoy them together for a delicious overall flavour.

The fluffy matcha mousse and rich matcha is unbelievably delicious. The dorayaki centre is soft, fluffy and thick which accents the flavour. Overall, the parfait is not overpoweringly sweet and the matcha flavour is gentle on your tongue.

Uji Matcha Cream Mochi: ¥110 (before tax )

Uji Matcha Cream Mochi is a soft, thin and chewy dough that is rolled out thin and then wrapped around a large spoon of uji matcha cream. This is always a popular pick. Last time, they served the uji matcha chocolate mochi. I wonder how the Uji Matcha Cream Mochi will taste!

This time, the mochi has a slightly more springy texture. The outside is chewy, yet the inside is gooey. This mochi cake is bursting with matcha so you can really enjoy the matcha flavour. The bitter matcha flavour is perfectly balanced with a touch of sweetness. This dessert even come with a fork so that you don’t have to get your hands dirty.

I know, it is hard to choose which matcha dessert to try. Convenience stores are always refreshing the varieties of goods they sell, so if you are particularly attracted to any of the desserts mentioned above, it is probably best to try them before they are replaced.
