“Rune Panda” to appear as new character in fashion TV show “Kawaii Asia” in collaboration with kawaii pioneer Rune Naitou!

31.March.2017 | FASHION

6 popular Shinjuku-kei and Harajuku-kei models – Kumiko Funayama, Ai Matsumoto, Hikari Shiina, Kurumi Nakata, Saki Shibata, and Anna Yano – appear on the fashion TV show “Kawaii Asia” where they take a look at the kawaii trends of Japan every week and present it to the world. This spring, the show will see a new character being introduced in collaboration with designer Rune Naitou, who has been called the “Kawaii Founder.”

Rune Naitou gave rise to “kawaii” in all its different forms, having drawn girly illustrations in extremely popular girl magazines in the 1950s as well as having released fancy goods. He was a leading figure for females in the post-war period with her influence spreading into people’s households and lifestyles. As well as being called the “Kawaii Founder” he has been called the “Pioneer of Kawaii.” But the most famous name of them all is “Rune Panda.” Before the rise of the panda boom in Japan, his art piece “Rune Panda,” which he drew after being moved by seeing a panda on a trip to London Zoo, was his first panda illustration and character which later became popular enough to become goods in Japan.

The 6 models will each be individually arranged into their own Rune Panda for the show for a new Rune Panda original opening anime which will make its debut appearance in April. Sebastian Masuda, who is often dubbed the leader of Harajuku’s kawaii culture, will make an appearance on the renewal, which will air on April 4th. Sebastian says he has been greatly influenced by Rune Naitou. He will be showing his collection of Rune books while talking about the charm of Rune Naitou. He said to Anna Yano and Saki Shibata, “‘Kawaii’ has the power to change sad, unhappy and difficult feelings into something positive. Rune used his own experiences to express this through his ‘kawaii.’” Sebastian also praised the anime, saying: “The anime completely embraces the world of Rune from, cherries to lemons. Each of the girls’ individualities come out of their respective Rune Pandas. But Saki Shibata’s Rune Panda is the most accurate and my personal favourite. Whether she’s holding a flower or mug, it looks just like her!” This show is a must see: surpassing the ages in a collaboration between the much-adored Rune Panda and famous models!
