26.September.2020 | ANIME&GAME
Japanese magazine and newspaper company Kosaido has been confirmed as being in charge of the printing, binding, and publishing of the second Slam Dunk manga art book PLUS/SLAM DUNK ILLUSTRATIONS 2 which will launch in France, Italty, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
The art book was originally released by Kosaido in Japan in April of this year and will launch in six countries overseas.
Kashimi (Kosaido Salesperson) | Comment
“Following the Japanese release, I am in charge of helping to publish the overseas edition of PLUS/SLAM DUNK ILLUSTRATIONS in six countries and regions around the world, something which has been made possible by Shueisha and [Slam Dunk creator] Takehiko Inoue. It has been a lot of work to ensure that the content of the book lives up to the same standards as the Japanese edition, including the quality of Shueisha’s work, the quality of the Slam Dunk content, and the zeal that Takehiki Inoue has towards the quality and the book. It has been a fantastic experience and a lot of fun working on it.”
Ando (Kosaido Printer) | Comment
“Being in charge of printing has shown me just how much Shueisha puts into their art books, and when I think about Kosaido’s print work being seen overseas, I get even more excited. We’re using a printing technique for this book that no other company is using called concentric screening which allows for detailed expression in the print. To make the dots in the print even tidier this time around, we’ve also been carrying out maintanence on the rollers, cleaning the machines, and other things which will allow for a greater level of quality. The finish of the book will also be taken to the next level by choosing a powder that has much less rough deposits. The printing team has put all of their efforts into creating this book.”
The first Slam Dunk art collection, INOUE TAKEHIKO ILLUSTRATIONS, was first published in 1997. This new book will feature 130 illustrations specially selected by the manga’s author and illustrator Takehiko Inoue as well as sketches, never before seen drafts, and more. Inoue has also drawn 14 new illustrations for the book including the cover.

The project is set to roll out for free in mid-June on Twitter and Comic Days. A teaser by famous manga artist Tetsuya Chiba (Ashita no Joe; Notari Matsutarō) was released on May 22, 2020.
A related project entitled “Day to Day” is also taking place over on the Japanese literature news website TREE where over 50 popular authors have penned writings and essays on the restrictions of today’s everyday life. Mairunovich Manga Gets Live-Action Adaptation Starring Hinako Sakurai and Fuju Kamio
28.February.2020 | ANIME&GAME
Shojo manga magazine Margaret, which is published by Shueisha and known as the “bible” for young girls, is teaming up with online streaming service Hulu to adapt the magazine’s romance and drama series into dramas. The collaboration is called “Margaret Love Stories.”
The news that three series have been green-lit for live-action adaptations already has fans excited. This includes Zakuri Sato’s Mairunovich (serialised 2010-2014) which has sold over 3.2 million copies over 12 volumes, Ayumi Komura’s Kami-sama no Ekohiiki (2017-2018), and Miyoshi Tōmori’s A Devil and Her Love Song (2007-2011).
The first of these series to be adapted will be Mairunovich, which will be released digitally in autumn this year. The live-action will star Hinako Sakurai and Fuju Kamio as the main characters.
Hinako Sakurai will play the part of Kinoshita Mairu, a high school girl who blames her unpopularity on how ugly she finds herself. She is bullied by her classmates for the style of her hair, which they liken to a “Poison Mushroom,” and because of her thick glasses. Feeling unconfident with herself, like all doors have been shut, she meets her saviour who will help her transform into a cute girl and rush headlong into life, love, and positivity.
Fuju Kamio is playing the part of Mairu’s saviourーthe most handsome boy in school, Kumada Tenyu, who will help to transform her into a beautiful girl that will make every student in the school do a double take. Though this good-looking boy has a sharp tongue, he has a kind heart. Kamio is set to take on the role of this hero, whom all the girls can’t resist.
The story focuses on these two characters in the series’s first-ever live-action adaptation. It’s a story about the height of youth, the feeling of falling in love, and the fear of trusting yourself to another.
Speaking about her role as Mairu, Hinako Sakurai said: “I went and read the manga when it was decided I would play the role of Kinoshita Mairu. Because of Mairu’s very plain looks, she’s left out at school. They bully her and call her a poison mushroom. But she experiences numerous forms of love, and she gradually becomes a gleaming young girl, which was wonderful to see. What does it mean to fall in love with someone? She gets hurt, but strives for love. I found myself naturally cheering her on. I’ll be sure to work hard so that she becomes a heroine loved by all who watch the show!”
Fuju Kamio also spoke of his role as Tenyu, saying: “[He’s] the most handsome guy in school. He’s a hard person to figure out, and a high school student a little different from the rest due to his confidence when it comes to makeup. I’ve never really thought about makeup much in my life up to now, but I’ll give it earnest consideration for the role. I hope I can convey the relationship between him and Mairu honestly, as well as how he provides help to her, and the concealed kindness in his heart.”

Come take a sneak peak at the incredible interior design of manga hostel MANGA ART HOTEL, TOKYO
11.February.2019 | SPOT
MANGA ART HOTEL, TOKYO is a new hostel that opened in the Jinbōchō district of Chiyoda on 1st February 2019. Its theme is “the hotel that never sleeps” and its interior is decorated with manga. On 28th January, the hostel held a special event that introduced the public to the hostel’s interior. Today, we’ll be having a nosey around!
More information: MANGA ART HOTEL TOKYO: The Manga-Filled Hotel That Never Sleeps
Grand bookcases spread throughout the manga space, housing 5,000 carefully selected manga. Bed units are positioned freely, and there are many cuddly spaces for guests to enjoy. In order to avoid the overcrowded feeling that a capsule hotel would have, large furniture was installed to make maximum usage of the space and give it a larger sense of depth.
Even the tone of the flooring was well thought out when the hostel was designed. In order to make the manga look even better, a light pink floor with basic white undertones was chosen to match the coloured prints of the manga. The bookcase was also designed specifically for housing manga. The dimensions of each shelf were designed according to standard manga sizes and were crafted with accuracy to the nearest millimetre.
The pure brass sheet designs on the ceiling are not just to accent the look of the interior; but they reflect the image of the manga on the top shelves, causing them to glisten whilst also making the area look more spacious. As these are suspended from the ceiling by a wire, guests are free to change the angle that they reflect light. Shaking the brass plates slightly allows guests to look at the manga on the top shelves – just like in an art museum. The brass plates were installed with the intention that guests bond closer with the manga that they choose, creating a comfortable environment of busy colours.
The cosy sleeping spaces are not to big nor too small and are fully equipped with a dimmable light, hangers, a locker for your valuables, plug sockets and free WiFi.
The counter at the entrance is a fluorescent yellow and white acrylic board nestled in the public zone and illuminates the area.
The walls and ceiling of the utility zone are both white to complement the pure wooden flooring. The feeling of warmth and cleanliness here perfectly portrays the image of a typical Japanese home design.
This hostel was designed with incredible attention to detail – there is so much to enjoy from its interior looks to the manga. You are bound to be too busy daydreaming to even sleep here – so how about popping over?
