Shibuya PARCO Announces “Fan Gathering” Themed ‘Mickey Mouse Now and Future’ Exhibition

04.November.2021 | FASHION / SPOT

PARCO has been working with Walt Disney Japan to produce the upcoming ‘Mickey Mouse Now and Future’ exhibit, which will be held between November 19 and December 19 in the Shibuya PARCO 4F ‘PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO.’ The art collaboration project will express the present and future of Mickey Mouse, as created by Mickey-loving artists from around the world. The exhibition was curated in NANAZUKA, a contemporary art gallery in Shibuya.

Mickey Mouse embodies Walt Disney’s  principles of “INNOVATION, CREATIVITY, IMAGINATION and STORYTELLING.” As the Walt Disney Company’s global ambassador, the mouse has inspired fans all around the world. He was first shown in the 1928 movie ‘Steamboat Willie’ and was voiced by Walt Disney himself.

Tanaami Keiichi, who will be displaying his art at the exhibition, described his memories of seeing the movie after the war.

“When I was a child, I watched Disney’s ‘Steamboat Willie’ at a small theatre near Meguro Station. I had only seen stop motion movies before then, so I was astonished by Mickey’s fluid movements, even drawing him in my notepad under the dim light of the emergency exit. Once I got home, I colored my drawings and began covering my bedroom walls with them. I was so satisfied, I felt like I could dance!”

Mickey Mouse also appeared in the 1940 movie “Fantasia,” which combined the splendours of classical music with brilliant colors, complete with fluid and graceful motion movements. It was considered one of the greatest movies of the 20th century and is still capturing audiences to this day.

The exhibition will feature memory-driven artwork from artists from Japan and around the world. International exhibitors include Javier Calleja from Malaga in Spain, New York-based Yoon Hyup from Korea, London-based James Jarvis from England, and the Los Angeles-based Darren Romanslli from England. From Japan, the Tokyo based Sorayama Hajime, Tanaami Keiichi, and Yoshirotten.

Javier Calleja and Sorayama Hajime have also collaborated to produce a giant 3D Mickey Mouse, which will be displayed as public art in Shibuya PARCO.

Don’t miss out on this exhibition where you can feel the artists’ love for Mickey Mouse.
