Mogumogu Scarlet #5: Watch “OIRAN” Show at KAWAII MONSTAR CAFE

14.September.2017 | FOOD / SPOT

Going inside the stomach of a monster sounds like something straight out of a horror movie. But, what if I told you the inside of charming monster Chappi’s stomach is actually a colourful wonderland of all the food he’s eaten; warped into fascinating structures, symbolising how Harajuku kawaii culture takes inspiration from all over the world? Come inside the crazy world of the Kawaii Monster Café!

The concept and design is the genius work of Sebastian Masuda, art director for the likes of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, and icon in spreading kawaii culture to the West. As you enter Chappi’s mouth, you are surrounding by huge cake towers, mushroom trees and various kawaii style motifs draping the walls in an explosion of bright colours. It really feels like you are experiencing life from this monster’s body, not a high riser in the trendy district of Harajuku.

As is the case with many shows in Japan, audience participation is a key factor. In the song themed around Japanese sakura, all the customers are given a branch of cherry blossom and are encouraged to join in with the dancing!

For those with a taste for Japanese sake, you can also have delicious Japanese alcohol presented to you from a teapot by the Oiran performers as you follow them around the revolving cake stage. Some nights they even serve blue coloured sake!
