Art & Music Come Together in Nakameguro & Daikanyama for Corporate Collaboration Tokyo Project 2018

Corporate Collaboration Tokyo Project 2018 (CCTP ART TKO) will take place for the sixth year in a row from October 19 to November 4 in the Nakameguro and Daikanyama areas.

 

The event is a fusion of ground-breaking art and music that brings together corporations, towns, people and craftsmanship to revitalise Japan and further open up the opportunity for global exposure.

The theme this year is Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Together with the Vermeer exhibition that has been taking place at The Ueno Royal Museum since October 5, the event has acquired content from Bridgeman Images, a world-leading UK-based specialist in the distribution of art for reproduction.

 

Artists who have been inspired by Vermeer will create paintings theme on arguably one of the Dutch painter’s most famous pieces, Girl with a Pearl Earring.

 

ART&MUSIC WALK: Galleries Hitting the Streets!

Location: Participating shops in the Nakameguro and Daikanyama area

 

Various stores around the Nakameguro and Daikanyama area will be home to lots of different galleries exhibiting and selling art. There will also be a Vermeer tribute exhibition at the MDP Gallery in Nakameguro, as well as a giant 3D Johannes Vermeer art piece near the Nakameguro branch of Tsutaya Books. The “MUSIC WALK” which began last year will also take place again which will see musicians from numerous genres including classical and jazz come together at SPAME M in Nakameguro. It will be a fusion of music and art.

 

Vermeer Tribute Exhibition

An exhibition of Vermeer’s work has been taking place at The Ueno Royal Museum since October 5. The artist is known for his low number of works; it’s said that there are 35 paintings in existence. The last Vermeer exhibition at the museum was held back in 2008 and brought in 930,000 visitors which was comprised of a large number of non-Japanese people. It’s expected to be busy again this year and so a booking system has been put in place.

 

The tribute exhibition to be held from October 19 will see a band of contemporary artists inspired by Vermeer’s work come together who will bring out the underlying aspects of Girl with a Pearl Earring in lieu of the immediate visual importance and surface level aspects spread by the media.

Montmartre was the heart of the art movement in Paris from the end of the 19th-century to the early 20th-century. Even today it is visited by many tourists looking bask in its history. Place du Tertre can be credited as part of the reason of its popularity where tourists are entertained by painters setting up their easels and painting pictures. That scene of Place du Tertre will be recreated at Nakame Arukas, a landmark of Nakameguro’s. It will be a special one-day event of art, music and the smell of great food.

  • Reiko Sudo’s Incredible ‘Japanese Fanfare’ Installation Art Now Viewable Online

    Reiko Sudo’s installation art piece Japanese Fanfare is currently on show at Compton Verney Art Gallery in the UK as part of its Fabric: Touch and Identity exhibition. Dubbed the “weaver of ideas,” Sudo is the co-founder, CEO, and Design Director of NUNO Corporation, an internationally lauded innovative textile company.

    Compton Verney Art Gallery is temporarily closed due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, but the art museum is now showcasing the Fabric: Touch and Identity exhibition online in a series of videos detailing each piece on display.

     

    Tearing down easy assumptions about gender and sexuality

    Compton Verney Art Gallery is a Grade I listed 18th century art gallery located in Compton Verney, England, and is enveloped in an immense stretch of parkland. One of their latest exhibitions, Fabric: Touch and Identity, “explores how clothes and textiles conceal, reveal and seduce through the lenses of art, design, fashion, film and dance” in a playful and provocative manner.

    The exhibition welcomes works by a diverse range of contemporary artists from around the world, and seeks to explore how artists and designers have used fabric to both express and subvert societal expectations, as well as sexuality and identity. The artist line-up includes Reiko Sudo and Noda Suzumi from Japan and British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, just to name a few.

     

    A world of indigo-dyed fans

    The final art piece to enter the Fabric: Touch and Identity exhibition was Reiko Sudo’s Japanese Fanfare. This art installation was also set up at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. back in 2017 to commemorate the national centre’s 100th anniversary. The installation is made up of 223 individual fans―a type of fan which was invented in Japan during the Heian Period―all of which are dyed in indigo, a colour worn by many Japanese people up until the last century. Both the fan and the colour are therefore synonymous with Japanese identity.

  • Mori Art Museum Encourages People to Stay Creative at Home With Free Online Art Content

    Like many institutions around the world now, Mori Art Museum is temporarily closed as a result of COVID-19. But that hasn’t stopped the museum spreading creativity as it recently launched a new page on its website titled “Mori Art Museum Digital.”

     

    The page comes as part of a new agenda by Mori Art Museum which it is calling “MAM @ HOME” which encourages people to “Stay Home, Stay Creative.” The project aims for the museum to stay connected with people even while the building itself is closed by offering a host of free art-related content.

     

    This includes the “Future and the Arts 3D Walkthrough” which had to end in response to the museum’s closure, an online sneak preview of the postponed “MAM Screen 013: Mounira Al Solh,” the “ARTISTS COOKBOOK” which features recipes, photos and stories from artists around the world, and more.

    Since “MAM Screen 013: Mounira Al Aolh” has been postponed as a measure against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Mori Art Museum is introducing two works online prior to the official screening: Rawane’s Song (2006) and As If I Don’t Fit There (2006).

     

    Mounira Al Solh works internationally and is based in her home country Lebonan and in Europe. Her work offers humorous takes on everyday events and stories, as well as episodes based on the lives of women from a contemporary society where political and religious conflicts as well as issues surrounding refugees occurs.

     

    Program #2: Future and the Arts 3D Walkthrough

    Due to the museum’s closure, “Future and the Arts: AI, Robotics, Cities, Life – How Humanity Will Live Tomorrow” was forced to end earlier than scheduled. Since then, the museum has been able to share walkthroughs of the exhibition via Instagram Live, as well as photos. Now people can enjoy the exhibition in a more immersive way as the museum introduces a virtual, 3D walkthrough, which they were able to capture thanks to the galleries being empty. It’s a complete recreation of the exhibition for people to enjoy at home.

    Special #1: ARTISTS COOKBOOK by MAM

    As a special project during Mori Art Museum’s closure, the museum has introduced “ARTISTS COOKCOOK by MAM,” a collection of recipes, stories, and photographs that artists from around the world have shared with them. The first recipe showcased is the “Kusama Lotus” by Kataoka Mami, the Director of Mori Art Museum. She describes lotus roots as reminiscent of polka dots and white nets, and that it’s a dish we could keep eating forever. She calls it a “dish for infinity.”

  • Tokyo’s National Museum of Nature and Science Launches YouTube Video Exhibition On Japanese Cherry Blossoms

    National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo has posted a new series on its YouTube channel entitled “Japanese Cherry Blossoms Illustrated by Ohta Yoai, a Pioneer of the Botanical Art in Japan.”

    In response to the coronavirus outbreak, the Ueno-based museum was forced to close its doors to the public on February 29, 2020. The museum was originally scheduled to hold the “Japanese Cherry Blossoms Illustrated by Ohta Yoai, a Pioneer of the Botanical Art in Japan” exhibition at the museum itself from March 14 to April 12, but due to the closure it was not run.

     

    However, the exhibition planners still wanted people to see the content of the exhibition, and so they have posted three videos on YouTube to take viewers on a tour of it. The three videos, themed on “Botanical Art,” “Japanese Cherry Blossoms,” and “Ohta Yoai” are presented by Japanese botanist Masanobu Higuchi.

    In the first video, we are introduced to the exhibition’s theme of Japanese cherry blossoms. We get to see examples of cherry blossom collected by Tomitaro Makino, the father of Japanese botany.


    In the second video, we realm about what kind of person illustrator Ohta Yoai was, as well as botanist Jisaburo Ohwi. Both of them co-wrote the 1973 work Nihonzakura Shu (“A Collection of Japanese Cherry Blossoms”).


    In the third and final video, we get to see some of Ohta Yoai’s best pieces, along with explanations of what kinds of cherry blossoms they are.

  • Interview: Internationally Popular Japanese Artist Chocomoo Talks About Upcoming Harajuku Exhibition

    A huge exhibition of Chocomoo’s artwork is set to adorn WITH HARAJUKU HALL from August 20 to September 28 this year for “Chocomoo EXHIBITION -OUR SECRET PARTY- Supported by WITH HARAJUKU.”

    Chocomoo is a Japanese artist born and bred in Kyoto. Her work is known for its originality and pop style which she draws in black and white. Her work has been used for clothing and apparel brands, for music artists, and for many other special collaborations with other companies. She is active internationally and draws huge popularity with Japanese women between the ages of 10-20. We have translated an interview with her which was just released.

     

    Chocomoo Interview

     

    “I’ve loved drawing ever since I was a kid. I’d draw in notebooks, sketchbooks. When I went to New York for the first time, too, I kept a sketch diary and would draw in the park. I was later asked by a guy who managed a gallery if I’d put my work on at his site.”

     

    It was there at that gallery exhibiting several of her works that the first buyer came by.

    “I sold my first piece of art. A piece of art drawn by an ‘ordinary person,’ not someone who was an active artist. It was about 30 dollars, if I recall, but I was super happy.”

     

    New York helped pave the way for Chocomoo to begin her first steps towards becoming an illustrator.

     

    She would post her art on her blog and social media, which was seen by singers and songwriters who got in touch with her. She penned artwork for their tour merchandise, album covers, and more. Recently, she collaborated with Italian car brand FIAT. They released 100 limited edition cars with her art on it. Japanese convenience store FamilyMart even sold umbrellas with Chocomoo’s illustrations on them. The reach of her work has no limits.

     

    “When I create a piece, I incorporate a lot of positive words into it in the hopes that it lifts people up.”

    One distinct aspect of Chocomoo’s art is the black and white monotone colouring. When asked why she draws in this way, she said: “I did calligraphy from elementary school to high school and was captivated by how we would write in black. When using black ink, it has a matte look to it, and when using black paint, it’s got a glossiness. I think that’s part of the reason why I do it.”

     

    This will be Chocomoo’s biggest exhibition. She is currently working on new material and looking into the details of the exhibition. Speaking about it, she said: “I want to try evolving in a way that’s me. I’m aiming to stimulate the people who come to see my work in a different kind of way.”

    She also commented on the ‘OUR SECRET PARTY’ part of the exhibition title. “It’s an exhibition of my work, but I want everyone to enjoy it like they would a party. There’s also new things to be discovered which you won’t no about unless you visit, so I put ‘secret’ in there.”

     

    Chocomoo was asked to give a comment on her future plans and goals. She said, with a smile: “I want to steadily keep doing what I’m best at without changing what I already have, but I also want my work to reach lots of children too. I’d be happy for them to colour in my work, and I want to challenge myself to making some kind of video format aimed at kids. After that, since I’ve already painted a car, I want to go bigger and paint an aeroplane!”
