The Strawberry Oreo Chocolate Frappe is a rich chocolatey frappe mixed with fruity strawberry sauce. It’s topped with velvety whipped cream which is drizzled in a chocolate sauce made with 54% couverture chocolate from Belgium and topped with Oreo® cookies. The Oreo Chocolate Frappe is all of that minus the strawberry sauce. It was first sold at McDonald’s Japan back in March this year for a limited time and proved hugely popular with customers.

  • Mogu Mogu Nippon | Convenience Store: Häagen-Dazs Mini Cup Houjicha Latte Ice Cream

    19.June.2019 | FEATURES / FOOD

This is the first article of a new series here on MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON we are calling Mogu Mogu Nippon (“Gobbling Japan”).

It’s no secret that we here at MMN love eating. At any time of the day someone in the office is eating or drinking something. We have a particular weakness for new products and limited edition seasonal items that are released here in Japan. From time to time, someone will buy something and share it amongst everyone!

In Mogu Mogu Nippon, we will showcase a selection of food, sweets and more that we want to recommend to you―our readers. For this first entry, we are heading to the convenience store to review the Häagen-Dazs Mini Cup Houjicha Latte.

Here in Japan, Häagen-Dazs regularly scoops out a variety of limited edition ice cream flavours, many of which are tea flavoured.

The one we recommend is their Houjicha Latte. This flavour was first released back in 2017 and has gone on to become hugely popular. Demand for this limited edition product to return has been huge (and I’m one of those people!). If you love tea, especially Japanese tea, then you’ll find this one irresistible.

Matcha and matcha flavoured products are enjoying a boom around the world today. Like matcha, there are a lot of houjicha items sold here in Japan.

The Houjicha Latte Häagen-Dazs ice cream is on sale right now for a limited time. I ate mine during snack time.

Upon opening the lid you are met with a spiralling marble-like pattern in your ice cream which are two different types of houjicha. The ice cream is rich and has a full-bodied milk flavour. This is coupled with the fragrance and delicious taste of the tea making for a seriously refreshing ice cream. The balance between the flavours is perfect, so you get richness but your taste buds are also left feeling refreshed.

The ice cream isn’t overly sweet and has just the right amount of bitterness from the houjicha. The sweetness of the milk fills your mouth and harmonises it all.

We recommend the Häagen-Dazs Mini Cup Houjicha Latte to those looking to eat a dessert made in Japan. You can pick up a cup at most convenience stores across the country, so be sure to give it a try if you’re here for summer, especially if you’ve never tried houjicha sweets or desserts before!

    14.June.2019 | FOOD

Summertime is well underway at Starbucks Japan as the coffee chain announces its third summer season beverage: the Lemon Yoghurt Fermented Frappuccino®.

Lemon Yoghurt Fermented Frappuccino: Tall ¥630 (Before Tax)

“Fermentation” has taken the limelight in Japanese food culture recently. Starbucks’s new beverage is the first drink they have released to include fermented ingredients―three of them, in fact. It contains rich tasting yoghurt, full-bodied and flavoursome cheese, and some sweet sake for a mix of Japanese and Western flavours to create a refreshing drink perfect even during Japan’s rainy season.

The characteristic of this Frappuccino® is its smooth and velvety original yoghurt which is used as the base of the entire drink. Added to this are cheese-mixed baked sablés and natural cheese packed with freeze-dried strawberries. The clincher is the refreshing lemon curd sauce which contains a sweet sake that wraps deliciously around the sour taste of the lemon.

The Lemon Yoghurt Fermented Frappuccino® will be released at most Starbucks branches across Japan for a limited time starting on June 19, 2019.

  • Blind taste-winning Taiwanese Bubble Tea Jenjudan Opens In the Young and Trendy Shibuya

    12.June.2019 | FOOD / SPOT

On June 14, popular Taiwanese bubble tea shop Jenjudan will open its first shop in Japan. The first shop will be located in the city that is known for capturing the hearts of Tokyo’s young and trendy: Shibuya. More specifically, the shop will be located on the MAG 7 Food Floor (7th floor) of  MAGNET by SHIBUYA 109.

Jenjudan stands out for their skilled tea makers and carefully-selected ingredients that are used to make their high quality drinks. One of the main ingredients is 100% natural brown sugar, which is used to soak the tapioca pearls for full flavor. They also use rich Hokkaido milk. The best part is that all ingredients used here are natural and free from additives. Plenty of research went into harnessing the natural sweetness of the black sugar by determining the exact amount of time to soak the tapioca in the sugar syrup in order to extract its maximum flavour. Jenjudan managed to achieve flavourful tapioca where the flavour gradually spreads through your mouth when chewed. The softness and size of the tapioca were also carefully crafted after extensive research.

The first ever overseas branch has been set up in Singapore’s famous tourist spot of Shilin Night Market.

Jenjudan bubble tea was the winner in a blind tasting event conducted by Taiwanese lifestyle and current affairs popular smartphone app Mobile 01, so you absolutely must try it.
