7 city illuminations to visit in Japan this Christmas

We’ll soon be into the middle of December, and Japan is getting colder and colder. It’s considered the season to stay inside and keep warm and cosy. But it’s worth wrapping up and heading out to go and see the winter time illuminations, something you can only see during this season. The gorgeous night-time scenery created by these illuminations will have you completely forgetting about the cold! MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON would like to show you a list of recommended illumination spots to see this season.

1:Shibuya “Ao no Dokutsu SHIBUYA”

“Ao no Dokutsu” was held in Naka-Meguro back in 2014 and was a huge success. This year, it will make its way to Shibuya. Stretching 750m from Shibuya Koen-dori to Yoyogi Park Keyaki-Namiki, the entire area will be completely dyed in a beautiful and enchanting blue colour which you can take photos of.

2:Naka-Meguro & Shinagawa中目黒・品川 “Meguro River Minna no Illumination 2016”

Meguro River, a place famous for its rows of cherry blossoms during the cherry blossom season, will be dyed in a beautiful sakura coloured illuminations. There will be double the amount of lights from last year – more than 42,000 sakura coloured LED illuminations stretching 1.1km!

3:Akasaka “The Prince Park Tower Tokyo Illuminations”

Located in the southern entrance of The Prince Park Tower Tokyo hotel is an objet d’art designed with the word “TOKYO” amongst a number of other things. There’s also a photo spot where you can take a photograph together with Tokyo Tower.

4:Shinagawa Shinagawa Season Terrace Illuminations ~Mirai e Negai wo~

Shinagawa Season Terrace will be displaying its first ever illuminations this year. These illuminations are a type that you can get up close and personal. As you walk up the stairs, you will enter an enchanting and fantastical world as you climb the stairs which are enveloped in dancing lights.

5:Shiodome “Caretta Illumination 2016 ‘Canyon d’Azur ~Aoi Seirei no Mori~’”

2016 will mark the 11th running of the Caretta Illuminations in Shiodome. This year’s theme is “Aoi Seirei no Mori” (translation: “Forest of Blue Spirits”). This romantic illumination show will be held in 20 minute intervals, featuring original music and interweaving, 7-coloured illuminations.

Roppongi is enveloped in fantastic illuminations every year. Whether its inside or in the midtown, the scope of the light shows is always huge, and every year it proves to be a spot for many people to visit. 7:Ebisu “Ebisu Garden Place Winter Illumination 2016”

Ebisu, the town for grown-ups, is also showcasing illuminations this year. The illuminations will light up lots of different spots with 10,000 ball illuminations, including the world’s highest quality baccarat chandelier. There will also be a Christmas market type of area serving food and drinks. Head on over and enjoy a relaxing time.

  • Sanrio Puroland Announces Christmas 2020 Event PURO RAINBOW CHRISTMAS

    Sanrio Puroland has announced that this year’s PURO RAINBOW CHRISTMAS event will run from November 13 to December 25. The theme for 2020 is “Rainbows,” and this time around, the event can be enjoyed both at the park and online.

     

    Colourful and Kawaii Christmas Food

    Sanrio Puroland will once again serve up a special Christmas menu of ten items, with iconic characters like Hello Kitty, My Melody and the Little Twin Stars wearing colourful Santa Claus hats.

    Food includes dishes like “Hello Kitty’s Christmas Gift Curry” with Hello Kitty holding a Christmas present, the snow white “Rainbow Christmas☆Snow Omelette Pasta,” and more. There are also desserts such as “My Melody’s Pink Yule Log Cake” and “Pochacco’s Pistachio & Strawberry Tree Parfait.” The multi-coloured menu line-up takes up Christmas classics like chicken and snow.

    Christmas Illuminations – “Rainbow Santa’s Christmas Eve”

    An exciting Christmas illumination show will take place at Puroland Village to the sound of Christmas-y Puroland music. Lights will brighten up the place with in a kaleidoscope of colours.

     

    PURO RAINBOW CHRISTMAS Special Greeting

    Visitors will be able to meet and take photos with the Sanrio characters in person for one whole minute. The cast will wear Christmas red outfits from November 13 to December 1 and change into white costumes from December 5. This will take place on the first floor Event Corner and will see Hello Kitty, My Melody, Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll, Wish me mell, and Dear Daniel make an appearance.  It will be carried out using social distancing measures.

     

    Enjoy Puroland Christmas at Home

    This year, Sanrio Puroland will stream past popular Christmas events held at the park on the Japanese video streaming site SHOWROOM on December 12. Shows include “HAPPY GIFT CHRISTMAS” from 2016, “The Puro Christmas” from 2019, and more.

     

    Infinite Online Greetings

    Sanrio Puroland launched online content back in June in response to COVID-19 which included getting to meet the characters online. They will host a special Christmas version on December 22 also on SHOWROOM where the characters will wear their white costumes from the Christmas show “The Puro Christmas.” Participating characters include Hello Kitty, My Melody, Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll, Little Twin Stars (Kiki & Lala), Wish me mell, and Dear Daniel.

  • Tokyo Midtown Announces Winter Event ‘MIDTOWN WINTER MOMENTS’

    Tokyo Midtown has announced that its winter event ‘MIDTOWN WINTER MOMENTS’ will run from November 19, 2020 to February 28, 2021.

     

    “ANOTHER WORLD” is the concept for this year’s rendition of the annual event, which will see new winter illuminations, Christmas decorations, the opening of an ice rink, and plenty of other fun experiences for people to enjoy throughout the entire day, right into the evening.

    A highlight of the event will be the “MIDTOWN WINTER LIGHTS,” warm illuminations to light fires in hearts during the cold winter season that will create a dazzling spectacle the likes of which cannot be missed.

    The pedestrian walkway will welcome a strip of gorgeous golden lights affixed to towering trees to guide your way. More golden lights than ever before are being prepared this year to pull visitors into a romantic and dreamy world.

     

    SNOW LIGHT GLOBE – A World of Snow

    The SNOW LIGHT GLOBE is a giant 3-meter tall and 4.5-meter wide snow globe inside which glistens sparkling snow, crystals, and aurora. The lights are ever-changing throughout the day, presenting itself differently every time you look at it.

     

    STEP LIGHT – A Colourful World

    STEP LIGHT is a fun and interactive illumination display with lights that light up when you step on them, creating a colourful walkway.

    MIDTOWN ICE RINK – A World of Ice

    MIDTOWN ICE RINK is something people in Tokyo look forward to every winter. This year, the rink is opening in November. It’s one of the biggest ice rinks in Tokyo and provides real ice for people to skate on, welcoming everyone from children and beginners to pros. The rink will be open into the evening too when it will be lit up so people can enjoy a little night skating session.

  • Ashikaga Flower Park Turns On the Lights For ‘The Garden of Illuminated Flowers’

    Ashikaga Flower Park in Ashikaga, Tochigi, has announced an illumination event for the autumn and winter seasons called “The Garden of Illuminated Flowers ~Flower Fantasy 2020~” which will run from October 17, 2020 to February 7, 2021.

     

    The annual event is being held a week later than usual in order to implement the necessary precautions against COVID-19 and to ensure visitors are divided from one another so that they can enjoy the event as always safely. Masks will need to be worn and visitors must sanitise their hands as well as have their temperature checked with the on-site thermal camera before entering the park.

    Held for the 19th time this year, the event was ranked among the Top 3 biggest light-up events in Japan in 2017 alongside Sapporo White Illuminations and Huis Ten Bosch Illuminations. It was also ranked top by night view critics in Japan as best the illumination event for four consecutive years.

     

    So, why is this event adored so much?


    The Miraculous Great Wisteria

    Due to COVID-19, people were unable to enjoy the blossoming wisteria during this year’s spring season, but now they can be enjoyed in autumn and winter in the form of illuminations.

    Illuminated Water Lilies

    Water lilies are enjoyed from summer through autumn. These water lily lights by the waterside are like little individual flower spirits.

    Illuminated Rose Garden

    A panoramic spectacle of vivid red rose lights. A special blue light-up will also take place to give gratitude to frontline workers who will be busy this season.


    A Flower Story of Illuminated Wisteria

    The multicoloured wisteria that bloom from mid-April to mid-May at the park are also being represented as dazzling illuminations which will reflect off the water surface to create a magical atmosphere.

  • Pokémon Illuminations to Shine at Lake Sagami in Kanagawa

    Lake Sagami Pleasure Forest, an outdoor multi-resort in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, has announced that the Kanto region’s biggest illumination event SAGAMIKO ILLUMILLION is set to return for 2020-2021. The event will see 6 million illuminations light up the area from November 14, 2020 to April 4, 2021.

     

    About SAGAMIKO ILLUMILLION

    SAGAMIKO ILLUMILLION is an annual winter event held at Lake Sagami Pleasure Forest. About an hour from the main city, the event takes place up a high slope with the 6 million lights becoming one with the surrounding natural environment. The event uses the latest in lighting technology and has gotten bigger and better every year. In 2018, it was chosen as one of Kanto’s three main illumination events.

     

    This year marks the 12th run of SAGAMIKO ILLUMILLION, and this time around it’s collaborating with the Pokémon franchise with lots of colourful illuminations set to light up the area and plenty of Pokémon photo spots to take your picture with including Pikachu sleeping in the forest, Charmander taking a nap by an open-air, and more.

    As well as the Pokémon illuminations, the 40,000㎡ illumination area will be split into 10 different kinds of illuminations, with each individual area having their own colourful lights. There will also be a 250 meter lift people can ride, amongst lots of other exciting things.

     

    SAGAMIKO ILLUMILLION is being held with all the necessary precautions in place against COVID-19.

  • Visit Osaka This Christmas For the Grand Wish Christmas 2020 Illuminations

    Grand Front Osaka has announced a Christmas event this year called ‘Grand Wish Christmas 2020’ which will run from November 11 to December 25. ‘Winter Voyage’ is the theme for the event which will switch on host of dazzling illuminations to warm up the cockles of everyone’s heart this coming winter.

     

    Winter Voyage: A journey of hope to connect the world

    The ball-draped Winter Voyage Tree was created by Japanese designer Kimi Hasegawa and will be placed inside the mall’s Knowledge Plaza. Guests will also be welcomed by the Champagne Gold Illumination which has been fitted with 400,000 balls, and there will also be a photo exhibition made in collaboration with travel culture magazine TRANSIT that showcases beautiful sights around the world.

    Winter Voyage Tree: The main Christmas tree

    The balloons that adorn the tree each represent a continent and how the world is connected to the same sky. The Winter Voyage Tree is a magical Christmas tree to deliver wishes this winter, with the balloons each having motifs of animals, buildings, and plans from each place around the world. See them illuminated with the ‘Lighting Show’ this winter.

    126 trees around the 1 hectare-wide Umekita Plaza in front of Osaka Station will glow with 400,000 champagne gold lights.

    TED HYBER -Ugly Christmas Sweater-

    Ted Hyber is a giant teddy bear created by French contemporary artist Fabrice Hybert. A symbol of Grand Front Osaka’s Umekita Plaza, he will be dressed up in an “Ugly Christmas Sweater” this year.

    TRANSIT Photo Exhibition – “It’s a beautiful planet”

    Travel culture magazine TRANSIT will be showcasing a selection of photos taken by a number of artists such as Yayoi Arimoto, who works for the magazine, taken around the world. It’s a great opportunity for those unable to travel in the current climate.

  • Autumn Lights Set to Illuminate Kyoto’s Konkai-Komyoji Temple This November

    Autumn illuminations are set to shine on Konkai-Komyoji Temple in Kyoto from November 13.

    Konkai-Komyoji Temple is a Buddhist temple that was founded in 1175. It is one of the eight temples of the Jodo sect of Buddhism and his home to numerous treasures including a painting by Edo period painter Itō Jakuchū, folding screen paintings by Tomioka Tessai, and more. There are many wonders to behold at the temple, such as the Tora-no-ma which has sliding doors that depending on how they are open or closed display a different number of tigers, or the Shiun Gardens which have a stream that reflects the beautiful autumnal colours of the overhead trees.

    The temple is also home to the Goko Shuyui Amida Butsu statue, which has been picked up by the Japanese media on many occasions and referred to as the “Afro Buddha” due to its afro hairstyle.

     

    There will be Japanese music performances with traditional instruments like the koto and shinobue three times an evening for the illumination event. If you’re in Kyoto this autumn, this is one event to not miss.

  • Cat Shaped Christmas Cheesecakes Arrive at Neko Neko Cheesecake in Japan

    Japanese bakery and pastry company All Hearts Company opened orders for its new Christmas cakes at its cat-shaped cheesecake store Neko Neko cheesecake on Thursday. The cakes are a collaboration with HEART BREAD ANTIQUE, a bakery in Japan known for its Magical Chocolate Rings.

  • Taiko-en: Osaka’s Oasis in the City Begins 2020 Autumn Illumination Event

    Taiko-en is an enormous site spanning 250,000 square feet and is home to a breathtaking garden, restaurant, and more. This year, the site is giving host to a special illumination event for autumn this year which began on Saturday.


    Since July 2019, Taiko-en has been lighting up its garden with illuminations for people to enjoy the beautiful garden in the evening, bringing together nature with the history of the site.


    The illuminations begin with projection mapping at the entrance of the garden which rolls out an autumn colour carpet. As visitors walk along the projected path, the lights and colours dance beneath their feet.

     

    Further in they will come to the “Night Museum” area where they will find stone statues collected by Denzaburō Fujita lit up, as well as paper lanterns, and more, offering a magical atmosphere different from that during the daytime. There’s also a path home to moso bamboo as well as acrylic bamboo with LED lights in it which lead visitors into a mystical world of dazzling radiance. In the main area, there’s a lake with a sea of clouds above it, and the trees of the garden coloured bright red.

     

    The restaurant and banquet area are open for business, so after enjoying a gourmet meal, visitors are encouraged to go and see the light show.

  • Kyoto’s Rokuo-in Temple to be Illuminated in the Autumn Evenings

    Keifuku Electric Railroad is lending its strength to Rokuo-in Temple in Kyoto this autumn to light up the ancient site in the evenings from November 14 to December 6.

    This year marks the 5th run of the autumn evening light-ups. The temple, just a four minute walk from Rokuoin Station, is known for its beautiful maple trees which blossom breathtaking autumnal colours during the fall season.

    The temple is selling new goshuin temple stamp books this year for the light-up event. Visitors will also be able to see 56 fusuma images drawn by contemporary Japanese artist Takaya Fuji.

     

    Rokuo-in Temple will close early next year for approximately 2 years and 9 months for repairs. The temple is also currently limiting the number of people allowed at once, making this year the best time to see the autumn leaves.

  • Hikari no Sumika Winter Illuminations 2020-2021 to Take Place at Gotemba Kogen Toki no Sumika

    Toki no Sumika is set to host its 19th annual winter illumination event “Hikari no Sumika” from September 19, 2020 to March 21, 2021.

    The Forest of Trees was created together with locals and wraps visitors in a magical fantasy land of lights underneath the shimmer of stardust. This trail of trees leads visitors to the next area, the Royal Palace on the Hill.

    The “Versailles Lights” water laser show entertains onlookers with a rhythmic show. A new spot has also been developed this year called “It’s a colorful world” where cuter balls of light change colour to the sounds that play. There’s also one of the world’s biggest “Bells of Love” clad in colours galore to radiate the dark night, “Slow House Twinkle,” and “Super Searchlight.”

     

    Tunnel of Lights


    Spanning 370m along, the “Tunnel of Lights” changes colours as time passes, enveloping people in a sparkling galaxy of illuminations. There’ll be plenty of photo opportunities.

     

    Twin Trees & First Dream Bridgeツインツリーと初夢の橋

    The colour of the 120-year-old fir tree at the site this year will be white. The 20 meter-tall tree will be decorated simply and gently, with more LED lights than ever before, to enhance its beauty. The “First Dream Bridge” will give rise to the “Stardust Road” of countless illuminations that run along it.

     

    Underwater Paradise Aquarium

    Around 4,500 goldfish of 200 species, including rare kinds, from all around Japan are collected here. It continues to grow as Japan’s only goldfish aquarium both in name and reality. Enjoy seeing them swim while gorgeous lights light up the room.

  • Japan’s New High Speed Bus Travels From Kyoto to Mount Koya

    Keihan Bus and Nankai Rinkan Bus are bringing back their high-speed bus service this year which will run from September 18 to November 30. The service will incorporate a mandatory booking system, making it even more convenient than last year.

    Mount Kōya is the name of the temple settlement found in Wakayama which first settled in 819. It is the centre for the Kōyasan Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism and is designated as a World Heritage Site, one of many found in Kyoto alongside Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera, and Shimogamo Shrine.

    The new Kyoto Koya-san buses offer a smooth, direct ride to the World Heritage Site, arriving there from Kyoto in just 2 hours and 40 minutes.
