Shibuya PARCO Refurbishments Reveal Collaboration Exhibitions With AKIRA, AUTO MOAI, JUN INAGAWA And More

The new fully refurbished Shibuya PARCO shopping complex is set to reopen on November 22, 2019. When Shibuya PARCO closed for renovations in 2016, GALLERYX BYPARCO was moved to Spain-zaka in the centre of Shibuya. This November, GALLERY X will return to its home on the basement floor 1 of the shopping complex. 

The first opening exhibition of GALLERY X is titled “AKIRA ART OF WALL Katsuhiro Otomo × Kosuke Kawamura AKIRA ART EXHIBITION” which will see an entire wall decorated in a collage of art by manga author and film director Katsuhiro Otomo and his legendary series AKIRA until May 2020. 

 

The art wall is in fact a relocation of the AKIRA art wall that has existed at the infrastructure building site in Shibuya for almost two years. Parts of it was damaged over time, and so it will resurface at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO on the 4th floor of the new Shibuya PARCO. That’s not all: there will also be valuable original works displayed as well as posters, 3D model recreations of things seen in AKIRA, the series soundtrack by Geinoh Yamashirogumi playing, 3D attractions where you can interact with a futuristic “Neo Tokyo” and much more.

  • Tokyo’s Revamped Snoopy Museum to Open On December 14

    The Snoopy Museum was moved from Roppongi to Minami Machida Grandberry Park last summer. Standing double the size of the original museum and being completely revamped, it has finally been announced that it will open its doors on December 14, 2019. Tickets for the first two days of the opening will be put through a lottery system with lucky attendees being selected randomly. Sign-ups for these tickets opened on Tuesday.   The revamped Snoopy Museum will house a variety of brand-new permanent exhibitions, just like the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center which is dedicated to the works of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz. There will also be a theatre with four large screens showing the life of Schulz and his career, his illustration techniques, and more. There will also be an area jam-packed full of vintage goods as well as exhibits of the Peanuts gang including Charlie Brown. Fans can also look forward to the Snoopy Room where they will be welcomed by the 8-meter long Sleeping Snoopy.

    As well as permanent exhibits, the museum will also showcase limited-time ones too, including borrowed works from the Charles M. Schulz Museum like original illustrations. Limited-run exhibits will change every 6 months. The first of these is entitled "The Beagle Scouts Arrive!" as pictured below.

    Fans of Snoopy and the Peanuts series can expect to get their hands on a whole range of original pieces of merchandise as well as items made in collaboration with other popular brands at the museum's Brown Store, a shop inspired by Charlie Brown.     The hugely popular PEANUTS Cafe will also open a new branch in the annex connected to the museum (in the Park Life wing) on November 13 in the lead up to the museum's opening. Their huge menu is packed full of greens are inspired by Peanuts, like the picnic plate which is based on the Peanut gang's "pot luck picnic." You can dine at the cafe even without a museum ticket.

  • Hiroo’s Cafe CANVAS TOKYO Turns Into a Pure White Canvas in New Monochrome Theme

    CANVAS TOKYO is a cafe and open concept store based in Hiroo, Tokyo produced and managed by BLANCA ASSOCIATION. The cafe has announced that it is taking on a new monochrome theme on October 10 where the entire cafe will be decked out in white like a blank canvas. They will also sell new products as part of the transformation. The idea behind this concept is to make the overall look simple while putting great care and attention into the little details. Everything from the cafe exterior to its interior, cups, cutlery and so on have been dyed black and white to give a plain yet sophisticated appearance.   The cafe will also stock a new range of merchandise under the same concept, like coats and bags, allowing the cafe's stylish look to extend into the outside world too. As well as this, the cafe is introducing some new menu items, including a tea latte, bao, and more.

  • Roof Star Gardens Illumination Event to Take Place On GINZA SIX’s Rooftop Garden

    Ginza's biggest shopping centre GINZA SIX has announced that it's set to light up its rooftop garden with an enchanting illumination event titled Rooftop Star Garden which will begin on November 26 and run until February 24 next year.   Standing at 56 meters high, the rooftop garden is the "closest place to the stars" in Ginza. This will be GINZA SIX's first ever illumination event and it will shine a bright spotlight against the nightscape of Ginza's streets.   Rooftop Star Garden will take place in two areas in the garden: the Water Fountain Area and the Forest Area, both of which will welcome star-themed light shows. The theme of the Water Fountain Area is "Shooting Star," whose LED lights will elicit a sense of profoundness in its observers. 147 LED lights will form the main monument of this area, with bright, sparkling illuminations that will remind one of shooting and twinkling stars. The Forest Area is made up of two separate areas between the Water Fountain Area.   • Hikari Shibata to Open Photo Exhibition ‘THROUGH THE WINDOW’

    Model, DJ, and photographer Hikari Shibata will hold her first photo exhibition in five years, THROUGH THE WINDOW, at the FLOAT Gallery in Tokyo for four days starting September 8, 2023.

     

    The exhibition’s title was inspired by Shibata’s shyness, which has always led her to photograph landscapes rather than people. Many photos were taken through windows, and both the view and reflections are meaningful and personal to Shibata herself.

     

    This year’s exhibition features photos of daily life taken in Copenhagen, Denmark’s largest city, where Shibata stayed for a total of three weeks in March 2023. It will also feature photographs snapped in Berlin, Los Angeles, and New York City.

     

    Shibata will visit the gallery in person to present her creations. In addition to the sale of exhibited photographs, guests will also be able to purchase T-shirts, hats, and Shibata’s first photobook, the latter of which is available in limited quantities. The self-published 112-page hardcover book was entirely designed by Shibata herself. T-shirts will be available in two colors and feature the title of the exhibition, while hats will come in three colors with an embroidered graphic image of the sun reflected in a window.

  • HARAJUKU COLLECTIVE, a Collaboration Between Hot Topic & Studio Ghibli, Gets Pop-Up Store at Shinsaibashi PARCO

    Last year, the HARAJUKU COLLECTIVE collaboration appeared at AF Gallery in Harajuku from August 10 until August 28, garnering massive acclaim from fans. The collection is now being sold at Shinsaibashi PARCO until March 12, 2023.

     

    HARAJUKU COLLECTIVE is a Studio Ghibli-inspired apparel collection by the popular American counterculture chain Hot Topic. Bringing more Japanese culture to the ongoing Studio Ghibli collaboration launched in 2014, Hot Topic stores began selling original items produced by nine Japanese creators and brands, as well as some original American items produced by Hot Topic’s executive designers.

     

    The lineup of Japan-original items includes T-shirts, tote bags, and other items featuring exclusive artwork by up-and-coming creators.   • teamLab Forest Fukuoka to Introduce Spring Sakura Theme for a Limited Time

    Starting March 4, the permanent museum teamLab Forest Fukuoka will transform its artwork into a stunning spring theme. Guests will be able to enjoy gorgeous cherry blossoms for a limited time, and starting March 24, the Catching and Collecting Forest will also be transformed in the same way.

     

    TeamLab’s works are created in real time by procedural generation, meaning that they are always changing and evolving. Each work changes depending on the season.

    Both Shifting Valley, Living Creatures of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives – A Whole Year per Year and Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives II – A Whole Year per Year are only available to see during spring. Come and see animals made entirely of cherry blossoms as they roam through the museum!

    From March 21 until April 5, 2023, Matsuzakaya Nagoya will host The World of Super Robot & Hero: Kazuhiro Ochi Art Exhibition, celebrating the creator’s 45th anniversary as an artist. Ochi is well-known for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam and dozens of other popular anime series, from Martian Successor Nadesico to Urusei Yatsura.

     

    Ochi has personally selected over 100 items to be put on display at the exhibition, including illustrations from Mazinger Z and Devilman, both of which are celebrating their 50th anniversaries. Fans can also expect to see illustrations from the newly-announced UFO Robot Grendizer project along with original sketches, promotional materials, and much more.

    Available merchandise will include an art book signed by Kazuhiro Ochi himself, prints, and character goods. New Cutie Honey and Cosmic Fantasy products will also be available for purchase.

     

    The animator himself will also be in attendance on select days, so don’t miss this rare opportunity to meet an anime legend!

  • Hisashi Eguchi’s Illustration Exhibition “Tokyo Girlfriend” Coming to Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, New Works to be Exhibited for the First Time

    From March 14 until April 23, 2023, Tokyo Midtown Hibiya will hold Hisashi Eguchi’s Tokyo Girlfriend illustration exhibition, set to show off the artist’s unique perspectives on people and cityscapes. The exhibition will feature new illustrations of the titular girlfriend standing in the streets of Hibiya drawn especially for this exhibition, as well as various other girlfriends both large and small.

    Hisashi Eguchi, a manga artist and illustrator, continues to convey the charm of the city and its people by vividly depicting Tokyo and the many unique happenings within. As Tokyo Midtown Hibiya celebrates its 5th anniversary along with many other nearby businesses, the Tokyo Girlfriend exhibition of illustrations by Hisashi Eguchi is being held to celebrate.

    The exhibition will feature a new painting of the mysterious girlfriend standing in the streets of Hibiya, newly created for the Tokyo Midtown Hibiya exhibition. A number of original pieces using Pantone overlay, Eguchi's favorite painting medium in the 80s and 90s, will also be on display for the first time.

    During the exhibition period, guests can enjoy autograph sessions, live sketches in which Eguchi himself will draw a portrait of selected subject on the spot, and workshops where he will teach tips on how to be a better illustrator.

  • CreepHyp to Bring 10th Anniversary Exhibition to Nagoya PARCO

    From February 11 to February 26, an exhibition inspired by the popular rock band CreepHyp will be held at the PARCO GALLERY on the 6th floor of the Nagoya PARCO West Building. The event is being held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of CreepHyp.   The exhibition is themed around a ‘Museum of Voices.’

    A person’s voice is said to be a true expression of their personality. This exhibition will give fans a new sense of what CreepHyp is and will feature their music, their MC content, and various radio appearances.

    Visitors will be able to listen to the member’s voices, but they’ll also be able to step on them, dive into them, look at them, and experience plenty of other ways to enjoy the band’s content. Completely immersed in this world of voices, this experience promises to be like no other. Come experience it while you can!
