Harajuku girls gather at Harajuku Station every month for the “Harajuku Fashion Walk” event

Hi everyone, Midori Blackmore here.

 

I’m usually at work in the MOSHI MOSHI BOX, the tourist information center in Harajuku, and the question I’m often asked by tourists is “Where are the Harajuku cosplay girls?”

 

Recently, the number of people dressed in Harajuku style fashion such as Lolita, Gothic Lolita and Decora has certainly dropped quite considerably. Most of the time you don’t catch sight of them, even in spite of the numerous weekend tea parties that were held around Harajuku until a few years ago. When you search #lolitafashion on Instagram there are more posts from people overseas than Japanese people. It made me think that the “Harajuku girl” was already on the verge of extinction.

 

… or so I thought.

UWAAAAA, turns out that Harajuku girls are still everywhere!

 

This event is the “Harajuku Fashion Walk.” Once a month, people gather outside Harajuku Station to go and walk the streets of Harajuku together.

When you think of Lolita events you think Midori Fukasawa, or the meet-ups held by the big Lolita brands. But the Harajuku Fashion Walk is much more carefree, plus it’s free to sign up and join in.

 

To participate, simply check the date of the next event on Twitter (@hsrajuku_fw) and meet at Harajuku Station. Everyone there stands out quite a bit! You get to stroll around while taking pictures with all the tourists and people in the area.

Where you come from doesn’t matter when joining in. Even if you can’t speak Japanese, as long as you love fashion, you’ll fit right in. Everybody there is super friendly. And don’t worry if you go there by yourself the first time. You will have made lots of friends by the end of it.

  • Tokyo’s New Halal Food Truck Opens in Harajuku

    Mr.HALAL opened its second Japanese branch, Mr.HALAL Harajuku, on Saturday (December 19). Mr.HALAL first opened as a mobile eatery in Marunouchi in February 2020, serving New York-style chicken over rice with its mantra “Healthy, Tasty, Spicy for Everyone.” Since then, it has delivered New York food culture to the people of Tokyo’s business district.

     

    Now, the mobile food branch is expanding to serve to even more people as it celebrates its 1st anniversary by opening a new branch in Harajuku, Japan’s hub for trends and youth culture.

    Chicken Over Rice

    Mr.HALAL’s chicken over rice is made to order with high quality basmati rice coupled with fresh vegetables. All sauce toppings are original, made with yogurt and spicy red sauce. All ingredients and items on the menu are of course Halal-certified.

  • Harajuku’s New Carbonara Restaurant Serves Pasta Japanese Style

    A new spaghetti carbonara restaurant by the name of Nama Carbonara opened in Harajuku, Tokyo on September 17, 2020.

    The restaurant opened in the same building as Harajuku’s popular fresh cream shop MILK and bubble tea shop Mot Tram. The restaurant makes its own fresh flat pasta everyday and uses fresh, rich cream sourced from Hokkaido.

     

    The current menu lineup consists of six dishes, from classic carbonara to Japanese twists. Let’s take a look at some of them.
