RADWIMPS to Provide Theme Song for ‘The Last 10 Years’ Film

22.December.2021 | MOVIE / MUSIC

The theme song for the film ‘The Last 10 Years’ will be performed by RADWIMPS. The track is titled Uruubito, and fans can look forward to hearing the heartwrenching song in the movie when it releases on March 4, 2022.

Vocalist and guitarist Noda Yojiro worked on the theme song as well as the film’s soundtrack after reading the script. This will be the third time RADWIMPS will be in charge of the entire soundtrack of a film, previously working on ‘Kimi no Na wa.’ and ‘Tenko no Ko.’

‘The Last 10 Years’ Trailer

Comment from Noda Yojiro (RADWIMPS)

This is my first time working on a live-action film, and it was a new and challenging experience. As I watched the scenes in the film, I had trouble deciding how I should approach Matsuri and Kazuto and those living around them.

I’ve probably watched this film 100 times already, and yet, when all of the arrangements were completed and the orchestra performed the final recording, I was still in tears as I watched it on screen.

Matsuri’s life is filled with meaning, and I know that viewers will leave with a new view of how best to live their life.

Comment from Fujii Michihito (Director)

When I read the script for ‘The Last 10 Years,’ the music created by Noda Yojiro flowed so naturally with the story of Matsuri and Kazuto.

Noda created the music before seeing the film, basing his inspiration on the script itself. Filming proceeded while the cast listened to his music. This work could have only been completed with his guidance. I hope that you’ll experience this incredible film when it releases in theaters next year.

‘The Last 10 Years’ is an adaptation of Kosaka Ruka’s novel of the same name. It tells the story of Matsuri, a 20-year-old woman who learns that she only has 10 years to live due to an incurable disease. She makes the decision not to fall in love until she meets Kazuto, a man who has lost the will to live. Matsuri is portrayed by Komatsu Nana, while Kazuto is played by Sakaguchi Kentaro.

“It went by in the blink of an eye. Thank you so much for coming out. All I can do is say ‘thank you.’ There is so much more I’d love to say, but when I see all of your faces like this, all I can manage to get out is ‘thank you.’ Meeting each and every one of you makes this all more real. I’ve been waiting to be able to do this for such a long time. Thank you.”

This is how vocalist Yojiro Noda thanked the audience with all his heart and soul at the end of the show. The first day of the ‘FOREVER IN THE DAZE TOUR 2021-2022’ was a joyous occasion after nearly two years of the pandemic, with fans gathering to praise the band’s first new album in three years ‘FOREVER DAZE.’

Since the tour has just started, I won’t spoil the set list and production, but the ensemble brought some incredible energy to the stage. RADWIMPS seemed to take on new life with each and every song performed, and the audience was slowly and steadily inspired by both Noda’s incredible vocals and the powerful instrumentals. Seven years after release, Mizuki Tsujimura’s popular novel about struggles in the anime industry Haken Anime! is getting a live-action film in May 2022. Along with the big news, a teaser visual and cast comments have been released, along with a teaser trailer.

The story focuses on Hitomi Saito, who has entered the anime industry and is making her directorial debut. She is competing for the title of Haken (supremacy) with the star direction she previously idolized, Chiharu Ouji. Together with a peculiar producer and a unique group of friends and colleagues, the novel shows the more difficult parts of creating a successful anime series. As anime has become more popular around the world, this film is sure to attract plenty of international attention.

The film’s talented cast includes Riho Yoshioka, Tomoya Nakamura, Tasuku Emoto, and Machiko Ono. Yoshika plays the lead role of Hitomi Saito, a rookie director who believes in the incredible power of animation. While she’s dedicated to her goals, she’s clumsy and seems to hit a new wall each and every day. Even still, the character is loveable and inspiring, as she tries to overcome each and every struggle.

Nakamura passionately plays Chiharu Ouji, a genius director known for producing plenty of smash hits. Emoto plays Satoru Yukishiro, a talented producer, while Ono plays Kayako Arishina, a famous producer who puts her job on the line for the best possible work.

The film will be directed by Kohei Yoshino, who also participated as a CG creator in Makoto Shinkai’s 2016 hit anime film Your Name. He has also worked on many music videos and commercials. Toei Animation will supervise the film. The animated teaser trailers were created by popular studio Production I.G, and both are actually the anime being created in the film. They were released prior to the announcement of the live-action film and caused quite a stir online with over 100,000 views on YouTube in a week.

The new teaser visual shows the four main characters with the taglines ‘Surpass yourself’ and ‘Grab the Supremacy!’ Will you be watching this film when it releases in your region?

    Comment from Riho Yoshioka

I play the role of Hitomi Saito, originally a government worker who decides to become an anime director. The film shows the steps involved in making an anime series come to life, and the incredible struggle of the animators. Anime is one of Japan’s treasures, but behind the scenes, there is so much hard work that goes into making each series–more than you can ever imagine.

Animators work day and night, making storyboards, drawings, videos…Their talent is unbelievable. Every day while filming, I had these realizations. I had never thought so deeply about anime creators, and now, each time I see an anime series I am so incredibly moved.

I hope you enjoy the film!

    Comment from Tomoya Nakamura

I’m Tomoya Nakamura, and I play the role of Chiharu Ouji. As I read the script, I found myself continuously nodding my head in agreement as I saw how much my character has that creative fever that’s so unique to this kind of profession. I’m truly blessed to play the role of Ouji, a man who has so many worries, but still holds his head high. I want those seeing the film to be inspired to do their best in their everyday life after seeing these characters put their heart and souls into anime. Please look forward to this incredible film by Kohei Yoshino!

    Comment from Tasuku Emoto

I went into this thinking that Yukishiro was a man with a strong personality, but also someone capable of showing kindness. The director has a small voice and strange idiosyncrasies, but also a stubbornness and incredible masculinity that you’d never guess from his appearance. I was inspired by that for my character. Haken Anime! is both light-hearted and incredibly deep, so please look forward to it!

    Comment from Machiko Ono

While filming, I found myself in an incredible story filled with hopes, dreams, and a path to follow. I fell in love with it instantly. It was such an incredible experience, and I can’t wait to see how the story connects with the audience.

    Comment from Director Kohei Yoshino

I was very fortunate to be offered the chance to direct this film, as it was a project I had loved for a long time prior. My memories of being a new director are still fresh in my mind, so this was a chance to put those thoughts and feelings on screen. I’m also lucky to have worked with such a wonderful cast and crew. I hope everyone enjoys this unique work that includes several distinct genres, and I hope that those wanting a career in the industry learn from this film and are inspired to take a shot. May this film be the dream come true to many as it was for me.

Comment from Original Writer Mizuki Tsujimura

Out of all the novels I’ve written, I thought Haken Anime! would be the most difficult to put on the big screen, as two different anime series appear in the work. I had given up the idea of it ever being adapted, given how long it takes to create anime of good quality. But this time, with the help of this wonderful staff and cast, it’s really happening. My characters Hitomi, Chiharu, Satoru, and Kayako have come to life, and their anime is real. I can’t wait to see them on the big screen!

The Korean mobile RPG is coming to Japan next month, and to celebrate, a special anime promo featuring the title’s theme song has been released. The track’s title is MAKAFUKA, and it was performed by the globally-popular band RADWIMPS. The animation was provided by anime studio CloverWorks, best known for their work on titles like Wonder Egg Priority, Promised Neverland, and Horimiya. During an interview with the band about the new song, plenty of details were revealed about the creation of the track and the secret story it depicts.

Interview with Yojiro Noda of RADWIMPS

Comment from Yojiro Noda (Taken from the above interview)

“When I first heard about the project, I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the Gran Saga team. They said they wanted to make something new and exciting, and they were set on having RADWIMPS provide the music. The band and I, we’re people who always like to set out on new journeys. Immediately after meeting them, we were more than happy to join the project. The real world is so chaotic right now, and the characters in this game are also struggling with their own situations. It was easy to pull from reality to infuse the music with these complex feelings.

By listening to this track, I hope that people will feel emotions they haven’t felt before when they’ve listened to our music. This collaboration might open you up to new sensations. Listen to the track as much as you can, and have fun playing the game.”

A 30-second version of the collaborative anime was recently released on the official RADWIMPS YouTube page.

The music video for MAKAFUKA was produced by Genki Kawamura, known for his work on Your Name and Weathering With You. Set in a parallel version of Tokyo, the video is interspersed with gameplay footage of Gran Saga shown on the character’s smartphones.

Gran Saga x RADWIMPS Special Animation ‘Profound Mystery’

MAKAFUKA will be included on RADWIMPS’ new album ‘FOREVER DAZE,’ releasing on November 23, 2021. The track will be available to stream on November 5.

  • RADWIMPS Announce New Album Title, FOREVER DAZE

    18.October.2021 | MUSIC

Rock band RADWIMPS is celebrating the 15th anniversary of their major-label debut, and the details of their upcoming album have been released! FOREVER DAZE, releasing on November 23, 2021, was created and produced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The album will be filled with a number of collaborations and experimental tracks, as the group continues to take on new musical challenges.

The band’s first original album in three years will contain 14 tracks including Natsu no Sei, Iron Feather, and TWILIGHT, revealed earlier this year as the commemorative track for the 1000th episode of One Piece. Other included tracks include SUMMER DAZE 2021, Utakata-Uta, and an orchestral version of Nekojarashi

The cover art for FOREVER DAZE has also been revealed and was created in an extremely unique way. Contemporary/AI artist Yuma Kishi utilized a database of portraits featuring 15-year-old boys and girls from a variety of backgrounds to generate an obscured AI-generated image of an individual transcending race and gender. The finished product symbolizes the current state of RADWIMPS, as they continue to evolve and change, never comfortable with just one sound or theme.

Grand Escape Official Live Video from the 15th Anniversary Special Concert

The band’s performance at Yokohama Arena will be included in the 15th Anniversary Box and will be available on either DVD or Blu-ray.

  • RADWIMPS Chosen to Compose Score to 2022 Film ‘10 Years to Live’

    11.September.2021 | MOVIE / MUSIC

Rock band RADWIMPS has been chosen to compose the background score to the upcoming 2022 film 10 Years to Live. The movie is directed by Fujii Michihito, while the cast has yet to be announced.

This will be the first time RADWIMPS will write music for a live-action film, and a special video has been released to mark this surprising announcement. “This film will inspire people to live each day to its fullest,” RADWIMPS frontman Yojiro Noda commented. This statement comes along with the comforting melody heard in the new video, meant to push the two main characters Matsuri and Kazuto together.

10 Years to Live Special Video

The Story of 10 Years to Live

20-year-old Matsuri is diagnosed with an incurable disease only affecting one in tens of thousands of people, and is given 10 years to live. Making up her mind to never fall in love, she intends not to become attached to life. But at a class reunion, she meets Kazuto, and the next 10 years of her life drastically change…

    Comment from Yojiro Noda (RADWIMPS)

RADWIMPS was given the incredible opportunity to compose the score for 10 Years to Live.

This was our first time composing for a live-action film, and it was a new and challenging experience. As we watched each scene, we had trouble deciding how to approach the specific sounds of Matsuri and Kazuto, and how to approach those around them.

In terms of total time, I’ve probably seen the film 100 times by now. But even when all of the arrangements were completed and the orchestra performed the final recording, I was still in tears.

I believe that this film and it’s depiction of Matsuri’s life will remind you, the viewer, to live each day to the fullest.

Please look forward to the film’s release in 2022.
