Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo will begin serving its new Premium Uji Afternoon Tea setーmade in collaboration with Tsuji Rihei Honten (est. 1860)―from April 8 at its Le Jardin lobby lounge which offers a full view of the gardens.

This marks the 4th run of this project which began as a way of appreciating Japan’s unique tea, in this case Uji tea. This time around the tea set will serve up all-new matcha sweets with recipes crafted by Shinsuke Tsuji, the 6th generation chef of Tsuji Rihei Honten, who has brought together tea flavours and fragrances perfect for the emerging springtime.

The set comes with an assortment of finger-foods including the White Bean Yatsuhashi which has an unexpected filling combination of white beans and pickled burdock. There is also the cream cheese and yuzu flavoured quiche, black sesame tofu canape and more.

It’s often the case that afternoon tea is served with a simple black tea, but for this tea set, three varieties of Uji tea have been specially prepared to complement the sweets. This includes Murasakicha, a purple tea which turns pink when you squeeze lemon into it; Houjicha, a refreshing caffeine-free tea; and Gyokuro Kukicha.

The Welcome Drink plan is available to 20 people per day which offers them a special tea served at the Tsuji Rihei Honten tea room. It has a dashi-like flavour and distinct rich fragrance.
