The rich espresso and shaken fresh mint bring a refreshing quality to the smooth ice cream. A perfect drink for the coming summer season.

  • Starbucks Japan Releases New Purin Almond Frappuccino®

    24.May.2019 | FEATURES / FOOD

The latest craze over on Japanese Instagram right now is Starbucks’s new Purin Almond Frappuccino®. I myself don’t use Instagram all that much, yet even I’ve noticed how vigorously people are posting about it.

When I saw how cute the drink looks and began making it into a news article for MMN, I wanted to try it myself.

Starbucks Japan are currently selling a range of retro-style beverages and desserts which have that old fashioned kind of appeal of them. As well as the new Purin Almond Frappuccino they are also selling a Coffee Jelly Cake and more. Check here for more details.

Without further ado, I headed to my closest Starbucks branch to try out the Purin Almond Frappuccino. There were four groups ahead of me in the line and there was someone in each group who ordered it! It’s safe to say then that it’s definitely popular.

The drink collection counter has its own retro Starbucks Coffee sign so I snapped a photo of it with my drink. My local branch serves drinks with lids, but I wanted to take a nice photo without one so I requested mine without one.

There are some branches without this sign so be sure to enquire in-branch if you’re looking for one.

I decided to take another photo because of the placement of the cherry. With that out the way, it’s time to taste!

So tasty! Contrary to my expectations, it isn’t sickly-sweet. Within the sweetness of the purin and the bitterness of the caramel are pieces of mango, apple and strawberry jelly. The whipped cream adds its own moderate sweetness too.

The retro-style Starbucks line is running until June 18. If you’re in Japan during that time head into your closest branch and try out the various items they have on the menu. They have a nostalgic yet modern feel to them.

  • Starbucks Japan Opens Nishitokyo Branch by 300-Year-Old Camphor Tree

    29.November.2020 | FOOD

Starbucks Coffee Japan opened a new branch on Thursday (November 25) in Nishitokyo, a western area of Tokyo, next to an ancient 300-year-old camphor tree. The coffee shop opens with a gorgeous wooden interior.

    Starbucks Nishitokyo

Starbucks Nishitokyo was built on top of a long-standing cafe called Kusunoki in Musashino, Tokyo that was loved by locals for 40 years before closing down. The Starbucks branch, with its striking warm wooden decor, takes inspiration from an old 300-year-old tree that stands 23-meters tall and 7 meters in circumference. The old round pillars that kept the previous cafe Kusunoki standing have been kept in place and built around, incorporating a tall new triangular roof, lights, and the walls, and more—all as an homage to the old cafe. This way, memories of the beloved can be passed on while making way for a new chapter in history.

    Starbucks’s wooden decor

    Starbucks Shinshu Zenkoji Nakamise-dori branch

    Starbucks Shikishima Park branch

Starbucks Nishitokyo comes as the latest Starbucks branch to have entirely wooden decor, something which the company has been incorporating much of in Japan in recent years. The Shinshu Zenkoji Nakamise-dori branch is made using five different types of trees sourced in Nagano Prefecture. The Shikishima Park branch offers an incredible view of the park’s flowers and trees, including the cherry blossoms when they bloom in spring.

Starbucks Japan is opening another wooden branch in Spring 2021 at Ise Grand Shrine.

An initiative to use wood grown in Japan

    Starbucks Shinjuku Gyoen branch

    Starbucks LINKS UMEDA branch

The number of shops and cafes using local wood in Japan is on the rise in response to the issue of using domestic wood from places outside of a local area. Starbucks Shinjuku Gyoen, for example, has walls, a ceiling, and drinks counter made from wood sourced in Tama, Tokyo, while Starbucks LINKS UMEDA has pillars made of wood taken from trees in Umeda, Osaka.
