UNIQLO Collaborates With Ryan McGinley On UT Autumn & Winter 2020 Collection

The Autumn/Winter 2020 Collection for UNIQLO’s graphic T-shirt brand UT features a pop culture line-up of photos, art, movie stills, character pictures, and more. This year, the brand is collaborating with American photographer Ryan McGinley for the very first time. Designs will also include the superheroes drawn by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring’s iconic Mickey Mouse, and artistic renditions of Marvel characters.

New York-based photographer Ryan McGinley has been called “America’s most important photographer” in recent years.     UNIQLO’s graphic T-shirt brand UT has announced an adorable new Disney-themed collection. The ‘Mickey & Friends Art by Steven Harrington UT’ collection is a triple collaboration with Los Angeles-based artist Stephen Harrington and Disney. The items will go on sale at UNIQLO TOKYO and five other nearby stores on June 10 ahead of the collection’s launch at all UNIQLO stores on June 13. The colorful collection was inspired by the happiness, joy, and freedom Harrington felt as a child, which the artist expresses through classic Disney characters designed his typical pop style.

     


    This collection is the first made in collaboration with Steven Harrington, whose vibrant art is inspired by California’s landscape and mixed culture. The colorful pop art found in his work alongside the beloved character Mickey Mouse is something Disney fans won’t want to miss adding to their wardrobe.

  • SPYxFAMILY Inspires First Collaboration at Uniqlo

    UNIQLO’s graphic tee brand UT has unveiled a selection of shirts inspired by the popular anime series SPYxFAMILY! Tatsuya Endo’s original manga has been serialized in Shonen Jump+ since March 2019 and has won a number of awards, selling over 18 million copies to date. In April, the anime series premiered to great global fanfare, inspiring the new collaboration.

    Popular characters appear on the new t-shirt designs, including everyone’s favorite mind-reader Anya. The pink-haired child appears in a hilarious way–with half of her scheming face hidden by the shirt’s pocket. The handsome spy Twilight and assassin Yor also appear in their own designs, so fans can choose the shirt that shows off their favorite character!   • Tokyo Ghoul Creator Sui Ishida Reveals Drawing of Marvel’s Moon Knight

    The latest live-action series from Marvel Studios, Moon Knight, premiered on March 30, and is airing every Wednesday at 16:00 on the Disney+ streaming service. The main character, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, is one of the darkest and most mysterious heroes in the history of the MCU, suffering from dissociative identity disorder. Tokyo Ghoul creator Sui Ishida decided to surprise fans by releasing a crossover image to celebrate the start of the series and highlight the similarities between the two main characters, Moon Knight and Ken Kaneki.

     

    The tagline of the illustration translates to “Clad in white madness,” and shows Kaneki with his pale white hair and a red background beside Moon Knight in pure white with a dark black background.

     

    Moon Knight protagonist Steven Grant is a kindhearted man who works in the gift store of the National Museum in London. He constantly suffers from blackouts and only remembers terrifying snippets of a former life. Eventually, he becomes the avatar for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. 

     

    Tokyo Ghoul has become one of the most popular manga series in Japan, with over 47 million copies in print as of January 2021. The series takes place in an alternate reality where ghouls, creatures who seem like humans but feed on human flesh, live among the general population in secret. After the main character Ken Kaneki receives an organ transplant from a ghoul, he becomes half-ghoul himself and must learn how to survive. Ishida highlighted the similarities between Moon Knight‘s Steven and Tokyo Ghoul‘s Ken, saying that they both have a lot of knowledge of what they’re interested in and have their own dreams, but feel hopeless. Both are also mild-mannered, introverted, and invested in not becoming complete monsters.

     

    Ishida commented that Moon Knight might be his favorite Marvel superhero of all time. The manga artist praised the new show’s fast-paced action, the gray morality in its violence, and the comical sadness of its protagonist. “I saw Oscar Isaac in Star Wars, and I’m wondering what kind of hero he’ll become in Moon Knight,” Ishida said. “I’m really looking forward to it!”

  • American Jazz Label Blue Note Records & Uniqlo Announce UT T-Shirt Collection

    Universal Music Group’s jazz label Blue Note Records is teaming up with UNIQLO to release five T-shirts featuring famous album art. The covers were selected by the Grammy Award-winning president of Blue Note Records Don Was.

     

    The new items went on sale at Uniqlo stores and online on March 21, 2022.

    “We’re delighted to work with Uniqlo to develop this new UT collection that will allow customers to immerse themselves in the designs of Reid Miles*. We can thank him for the enduring aesthetic of Blue Note constructed during the 50s and 60s. The album covers he created are works of art in themselves.”

    The Blue Note and UNIQLO collaboration began in 2011, and this fourth collaboration is also the second installment of the popular UT graphic T-shirt collection which was first released last year. The UT designers selected the shirt designs from the 30 iconic Blue Note album jackets chosen by Don Was.

     

    The five designs are inspired by Lee Morgan’s Cornbread and The Rumproller, Freddie Hubbard’s Hub-Tones, Andrew Hill’s Judgment!, and Eric Dolphy’s Out To Lunch.

     

    To celebrate this collaboration, Blue Note has released “BLUE NOTE MEETS UT,” an official playlist curated by Don Was. Be sure to give it a listen!

  • MoMA Launches ‘MoMA Art Icons UT,’ an Apparel Collection by Modern Artists

    Uniqlo’s graphic tee brand UT is teaming up with the Museum of Modern Art in New York City for a new apparel collection. The new clothing items were made under the concept of ‘Art for All,’ aiming to make art more accessible to the masses. 

     

    The artwork on each T-shirt and sweatshirt were created by masters of modern art featured in the MoMA, from Van Gogh to Monet. Each product is also adorned with the MoMA logo to commemorate the collaboration.

    This collaboration focuses on the past of the main characters, unique to this prequel of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series. The main character, Yuuta Okkotsu, is haunted by his childhood friend Rika who died in a car accident. Satoru Gojo, wearing a fresh white bandage over his eyes rather than the black mask seen in the anime, and Geto Suguru, the film’s villain, are also making appearances in the new collection.

  • Marvel’s Eternals and Sword Art Online Collaborate in New Promotion

    Over the past few years, Marvel movies have absolutely shattered box office records. The story of the Avengers is now continuing in an entirely new way, as Marvel’s Eternals recently released in theaters around the world. Telling the story of a race of immortal beings, the film was directed by Chloe Zhao, the first Asian-American woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director for her film Nomadland.

     

    While there has been no shortage of promotion for the film, the way Japan is highlighting the film is a little different. Recently, Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night was released, and fans of the popular anime series have been singing its praises across social media. The franchise has sold incredibly well around the world, with multiple anime series, video games, and comics selling over 26 million copies globally. The first film, released in 2017, grossed more than 2.5 billion yen at the box office. 

     

    Eternals tells the origin story hinted at in the Avengers films, while Aria of a Starless Night tells the origin story of Sword Art Online. They both tell stories of unbreakable friendship, and both feature characters attempting to stop evil and save the world. Now, the two have come together for an unforgettable collaboration. 

     

    The creator of Sword Art Online, Reiki Kawahara, is a huge fan of Marvel and was more than happy to make this collab a reality. A collaborative trailer has just been released, along with a side-by-side poster.

    The narrators in the trailer are Ayumi Tsunematsu, who plays Cerci in the Japanese version of Eternals, as well as Haruka Tomatsu, the voice of Asuna in Sword Art Online.

    A limited-time Marvel themed cafe is coming to Umeda, Osaka from September 16 until October 17. Produced by OH MY CAFE, the concept is centered on themes such as power, courage, talent, justice, and friendship, and the menu will be filled with items inspired by the many heroes of the Marvel universe.
