  • Tokyo’s New Sake Ice Cream Shop Launches Crowdfunding Campaign to Ship Ice Cream Around Japan

    03.May.2020 | FEATURES / FOOD

SAKEICE is an ice cream shop that offers a new kind of ice cream experience, combining Japanese sake and alcohol together with the frozen treat. The shop opened in Akusaka, Tokyo in March this year.

However, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the store has had to close temporarily. SAKEICE wants to cheer people up during these turbulent times with their ice cream, and has therefore announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign so they can set up a website where people can order ice cream in Japan and have it delivered to them.

I tried out their ice cream

    Otokoyama / Nihonshu Ice

SAKEICE’s ice cream is laced with lots of Japanese alcohol. I tried the Otokoyama and the Nihonshu Ice, the latter of which is an original ice cream flavour exclusive to SAKEICE. They both contains around 4% alcohol. I were curious exactly how they would taste.

I started with the Nihonshu Ice. The moment the ice cream hits your tongue, your taste buds are met with its smooth texture, and your nose is filled with the full bodied flavour of nihonshu. The velvety texture on your tongue as it melts is to die for. The Otokoyama has a refreshing kick to it when compared to the Nihonshu Ice. It’s creamy, but the aftertaste is refreshing, so we recommend it for people who aren’t a fan of sweet treats. Both are sure to leave you feeling satisfied, and maybe a little flushed afterwards.

These ice creams contain alcohol, so keep that in mind when coming here with minors, kids, pregnant women, or if you’re driving.

    They have non-alcoholic flavours too!

    Matcha / Cherry Blossom

Of course, they have non-alcoholic options too. I tried out the matcha and cherry blossom flavours.

The matcha one has an irresistible bitterness layered inside the sweetness. You get that real rich matcha taste too. The cherry blossom ice cream is a cute light pink colour and has a subtle sweetness to it. If you don’t like alcohol then you’ll definitely want to try one of delights.

  • Food Review: Cherry Blossom Afternoon Tea at Q-pot CAFE. in Omotesando

    11.March.2020 | FEATURES / FOOD

The MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON editorial team took a trip to Q-pot CAFE. to try out their new afternoon tea experience, the “SAKURA Romantic Tea Party,” where we were treated to a pink kawaii tea party experience. This afternoon tea is available now until April 26, 2020.

The cherry blossom designed decor and decorations welcomed us to an early spring. We ate in the cafe’s “SAKURA Room” for this review, which takes the Q-pot’s springtime cherry blossom experience to the next level.

Romantic SAKURA Afternoon Tea Set w/ Drink – ¥2,400 (Serves 1) (Tax Included) *Photo shows tea set for two

The top plate is beautifully adorned with cherry blossom St. Honoré cakes which are filled with a sumptuous gorgeous cherry blossom cream. There is also peach bavarois, strawberry cookies, and Q-pot CAFE.-original rich, cream ganache-filled macarons. The fallen cherry blossom petals on the plate are also in fact chocolate.

Everything on the plate screams kawaii with the considerate attention that is given to all the little details.

The bottom plate is the savoury stuff. We have hearty croissants filled with duck pastrami and cucumber that has been dressed with white wine vinegar. They are served with a white asparagus cream potage soup and skewered olives, mini tomatoes and pickles.

The balance of flavours between the top and bottom plates is exquisite; the savoury food refreshes your palate after the sweet treats on top.

The set comes with a cup of pink cherry blossom tea. Floral and fruity fragrances fill your nose as you go to take a sip, after which your taste buds are treated to the notes of cherry blossom and raspberry. This subtly sweet and refreshing drink is the perfect accompaniment to your dessert and meal line-up. It even comes with a little chocolate petal.

Romantic SAKURA Mont Blanc Plate w/ Drink – ¥2,060 (Tax Included)

The pink mont blanc gives cherry tree vibes. It’s made with cherry blossom bean paste cream, rich matcha chocolate, Japanese waguri chestnut, and chestnut cream. When  you fork the fluffy bean paste, you get plenty of chestnut cream and matcha chocolate with it. The sweetness of the cherry blossom bean paste and the subtle bitterness of the matcha go really well together. Q-pot. CAFE offers a selection of original macarons too which you can pick from including strawberry, chocolate, lemon, and melon. We wanted to go as pink as possible, so we went for the strawberry one!

Romantic SAKURA Parfait w/ Drink – ¥1,850 (Tax Included)

This strikingly gorgeous parfait is topped with cherry blossom cookies, cherry blossom meringue, and more. Its tall beautiful form is built up by a selection of ingredients, including Japanese flavours like cherry blossom cream and houjicha sauce.

But what we want to draw attention to is the transparent jelly in the middle of the glass. If you look really closely, it looks like dancing cherry blossom leaves.

Q-pot CAFE. also has a range of other limited-time menu items, as well as food that looks just like real accessoriesーsomething the cafe is famous for. They also have accessories that look like real desserts, like a sugar cookie or crunchy meringue. Perfect for coordinating a spring look this year.

Make sure to pay a visit to Q-pot CAFE. if you’re visiting Tokyo this spring!

  • Star Wars Theme Cafe Opens in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Hokkaido & Fukuoka

    25.January.2020 | FEATURES / FOOD / SPOT

With The Rise of Skywalker concluding the Skywalker saga of the Star Wars film franchise, fans are left craving more from the galaxy far far away.

If you’re one of those people, and need a fix before season two of The Mandalorian, which is coming in late 2020, then you’ll want to hit up the all-new Star Wars-themed cafes now open for a limited time at branches of OH MY CAFE across Japan in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Hokkaido, and Fukuoka.

We visited the Tokyo branch of the cafe which is located inside Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku. Here’s our report of this must-see cafe for Star Wars fans, a museum-like space chock-full of concept art.

Ready to greet you as you walk into the cafe is none other than Darth Vader. This life-size recreation of the Sith Lord is really striking, but don’t worryーthough he is realistic, he won’t use his Force choke on you, he only wishes for you to have a nice meal.

Plastered across the cafe walls are pieces of concept art used during the production of the Star Wars film series.

Here’s a galactic showcasing of the cafe’s menu. There are 7 food items and 5 drinks to choose from, all inspired by the franchise and its characters.

<STAR WARS> Far Far Away Galaxy Black Curry – ¥1,590

A signature dish of the cafe, this black curry features the Star Wars logo which is actually an edible wafer. The space design is bamboo charcoal-cooked rice which is mixed with spicy sauce and topped with peanuts for stars.

    <BB-8> Seafood BB-8 Gratin – ¥1,690

Fans of BB-8 won’t be able to resist this delicious gratin, served with salad and French bread for a full belly.

    <Yoda> Root Leaf Stew – ¥1,590

This stew is inspired by Yoda living his final years in his little shack in Dagobah during Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. It’s packed full of vegetables and will no doubt be enjoyed by both kids and adults alike.

    <R2-D2 & C-3PO> Buddy Burger Plate – ¥1,990

This set of two chicken burgers comes with an R2-D2 seasoned with béchamel sauce and a C-3PO burger seasoned with meat sauce. You can take the flags home with you too. We recommend sharing this between two people.

    Portion Bread – ¥500

This is the one I was most interested in personally, because I was curious to know from its appearance how it would taste. It’s the portion bread that Rey tries eating in the film. At first glance it looks crunchy, but to my surprise it was soft with a subtle sweet flavour.

    Lightsaber Drinks – ¥600 Each (w/ Coaster ¥1,300)

From the left, the flavours are Darth Vader blood orange, Luke Skywalker ramune, and Yoda melon. When you draw your straw from the paper wrapping, it turns into a lightsaber!

    <STAR WARS > Jet Black Coffee – ¥600 (w/Bottle ¥1,750)

These limited edition bottles of black coffee feature the famous Star Wars opening crawl credits. Which one you get is randomーa must-have for all fans!

After enjoying some Star Wars food and drink, it’s time to check out the cafe’s exclusive merchandise. There are 13 types of merch in total all bearing artwork from across the film series.

    Folder – ¥350

I recommend picking up one of these folders made in collaboration with the cafe. It has illustrations of the food and drinks being sold there.

    Tote Bag – ¥3,500

This tote bag has illustrations of characters from Star Wars and how they are all connected.

There’s plenty of other must-grab merch too, from music to stationery and more.

Customers who spend over ¥1,000 (excluding tax) on any of these exclusive items will receive the above-pictured limited edition bag. These are limited in stock so are available while supplies last.

There’s plenty of places inside for fans to take great photos, so make sure you snap lots.

Also, if you book a table in advance and order something from the menu, you’ll receive one of these 25 possible A5 folders, so be sure to book before you go!

  • Food Review: Q-pot CAFE.’s Afternoon Tea in Omotesando is a New Year’s Treat

    25.December.2019 | FEATURES / FOOD / SPOT

The afternoon tea is the perfect way to treat yourself to a little indulgence as you tuck into tea and sweets in the latter half of the day. It’s something surely everybody wants to try at least once.

Q-pot. is known for its accessory brand, which features jewellery made to look like sweets and desserts. It is also known for the Q-pot CAFE. which flips that concept, instead making sweets and desserts that look just like real accessories.

We recently covered the Christmas afternoon tea at Q-pot CAFE., so what on earth could be so special about this option that we just had to report on it?

2020 is the Year of the Rat in the Chinese zodiac, and so I was seated in the cheese area based on mice and rats’ favourite food.

Seated with me at the table was Q-chan, a rat character created by Q-pot. which looks like a real rat eating cheese. The afternoon tea set I ordered is in fact based on this Q-chan character.

“CHEESE” Afternon Tea Set w/ One Drink – ¥2,400 (Tax Included)

The joyous and auspicious-looking afternoon tea set was adorned with a golden rosetta, fittingly festive for the New Year.

The upper tier of the set is plated with servings of no-baked mousse, cupcakes, cherry scones, and lemon-flavoured cream macarons. Each and every piece was a work of art so beautiful they almost seemed a waste to eat!

The red velvet cupcakes are topped with chocolate cream made in the image of our Q-chan. The flavours were a perfect match with the sweet and sourness of the red velvet and the subtly sweet chocolate.

The no-bake mousse was in its own league: sensuously smooth and topped with crunchy streusel. Every mouthful was a treat to the senses―delicious with an incredible smell.

The lower tier was packed full of filling savoury foods including a roast beef, tomato and broccoli croissant. There was also a rich potage made with onions, potatoes and melted cheese, as well as skewered baby tomatoes, olives and pickles which were perfect as a palate cleanser after the sweets.

    Hot “CHEESE” Tea – ¥750

The afternoon tea set comes with one drink, so you can pick your favourite from the menu, but for an extra ¥100 you can get the New Year’s-exclusive drink: a hot cheese tea made with Q-pot CAFE.’s luxurious “Sweet Weekend” black tea . It has a smooth texture and a gorgeous subtle cheese scent.

“CHEESE” Parfait w/ Drink – ¥1,850 (Tax Included)

This parfait is also a New Year’s exclusive. It’s made formed of cute orange apricot layers, salty cookies, chocolate sponge, and topped off with cheesecake. Sat on the cheesecake having a munch is none other than Q-chan.

Apricot and cheese is a rare combination, but it results in this parfait being like a refreshing no-bake cheesecake. As you delve lower into the depths of the parfait you can enjoy an assortment of scrumptious flavours.

Q-chan’s tail is actually shaped like the letter “Q” too, and hidden behind him is a pile of nuts and at either side of him cookies with “2020” written on them. It really is a filling parfait.

It was a very satisfying meal, from the sweets and drinks to the afternoon tea!

    Q-pot CAFE. Happy Bag 2020 – ¥3,000 (Before Tax)

Q-pot CAFE. is also selling fukubukuro in a cute cheese colour. This is the cafe’s first time selling fukubukuro lucky bags with rat motifs.

Award-winning Japanese writer Mizuki Tsujimura also posted a story about Q-chan on the cafe’s website which can be read below in Japanese.

▼The Adventures of the Little Rat Known as “Q”

    http://www.q-pot.jp/news/2019/12/1159.html

There are several other fukubukuro lucky bags you can get your hands on too filled with accessories centred around cheese. The items are limited-edition and exclusive and come in ¥10,000 (Before Tax) and ¥30,000 (Before Tax) options.
