The MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON Executive Committee will hold the country’s biggest inbound event for promoting Japanese pop culture to the world, “MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON FESTIVAL 2018 in SHIBUYA,” across the areas of Shibuya and Harajuku on Saturday March 24 and Sunday March 25. New artists have been added to the event line-up as well as their performing dates. Registration for the event is also now open. This year’s MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON FESTIVAL will take place in four main locations. Here are the artists set to the perform as well as the content and activities to be held at each location.

 

In this article, we’ll take a detailed look at the stage performances and booths you can expect to see at Onden Shrine.

 

穏田神社

The theme at Onden Shrine is “Tying Links with the Gods of Harajuku.” “Ennichi” is held at the traditional Onden Shrine. Stalls are a must-have at Japanese festivals, so you can expect to see plenty of them for the MMN Festival lined with food, offering classic activities such as yo-yo fishing, and more. A stage will also be set up at the shrine where you can look forward to seeing a traditional Japanese ‘taiko’ drum performance and more, as well as getting involved with the mizuhiki workshop where you’ll learn how to make your own decorative cord to tie envelopes with! Onden Shrine will be packed with content that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

STAGE CONTENT: YUMENOYA Ukon Takafuji Japanese Dance Show & Bon Odori

The “Takafuji Dance Company” is a pioneer of traditional Japanese dance that boasts a history of 100 years. Ukon Takafuji is the second generation of the company as well as the producer and chairman of “JAPAN CULTURE ENTERTAINMENT -YUMENOYA-” who is set to put on a traditional Japanese dance show. It is an “experienced-based” show meaning you yourself can join in to dance Bon Odori.

 

Not only will there be classic Bon Odori hits playing such as Tokyo Ondo, but also a performance of Tokyo Bon 2020 choreographed by Ukon Takafuji, a song co-produced with “COOL JAPAN TV” that has taken the world by storm online with a collective 100 million plays across video streaming platforms.

STAGE CONTENT: Satsumasendai Odoridaiko

A Japanese drum (taiko) group made up of girls in their teens and 20s. Besides Japanese drums, their stage performance also captivates fans around the world with other traditional Japanese instruments such as the shinobue, as well as traditional Japanese dance.

STAGE CONTENT: Awa Odori Dance TAKARABUNE

TAKARABUNE is a creative dance group of Awa Odori, a traditional type of Japanese dance that boasts a 400-year history, who challenge themselves to creating new possibilities for this traditional Japanese artform. You must not miss this stage performance by Japan’s sole professional Awa Odori dance group!

BOOTH CONTENT: Learn Shrine Etiquette!

Staff will co-ordinate and teach you the manners and etiquette associated with shrines. It’s a great chance for newcomers to Japanese shrines and maybe even an opportunity for those in-the-know to learn about them again.

    Location: Laforet Museum Harajuku (Laforet Harajuku 6F)

    Themed on the concept of “Find Japan’s Kawaii♡,” you will turn into a kawaii girl in this area simply by turning up with a selection of fashion, beauty, fortune-telling, DIY and more.

     

    Three additional performers have been added to the festival’s line-up. They include Noah Sato, Yoshiaki and Michi.

    Noah Satou will join model Ren Koseki on stage to introduce their recommended spring cosmetics. The two of them use a lot of cosmetics as seen in their online videos where they test them out, so they are set to showcase their recommended products.

    Yoshiaki and Michi will feature on stage with Youtuber Megane, whose appearance has already been announced. The three of them will host a talk show discussing their private lives as popular models and Youtuber respectively.

    It has also been announced that Megane , Yoshiaki and Michi will join the flea market where personal items of the on-stage performers will be sold, including Natsume Mito, whose appearance has become the talk of the town.     <Enjoy Hanami Early in Shibuya: “MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON Market”>

    Location: Shibuya Cast

    The theme of this market is to experience Japan’s flower-viewing season early in Shibuya. Gaze at cherry blossoms while indulging in traditional Japanese food, sweets and sake, and enjoy the stalls selling fresh Japanese produce and more. The market will offer a food experience only possible in Japan.

    The “Moshi Moshi Kimono Salon” has been added to the festival. This rental kimono salon located in the Harajuku Tourist Information Center will have its own booth at SHIBUYA CAST where you can have a kimono fitted to enjoy hanami.

     

    At the Don Quijote booth, they will sell must-have items for hanami, such as sake, as well as typical Shibuya souvenirs. “Shibu Fes” – the fashion event that takes over the streets of Shibuya – will also have its own booth where they will be handing out “fashion bonuses” that can be used when shopping (March 24th only).

    Traditional Japanese performance art, character DJs and more will take to the stage at Onden Shrine, a site steeped in tradition. Experience an array of food, drinks and workshops at this Ennichi event.

    This year’s MMN Festival will move away from the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium and take place around the Shibuya and Harajuku area! We will deliver Japanese culture to the world to the fullest in the form of music, fashion, food, tourist experiences and more from Shibuya.

    Despite being girls, this three-piece band have a unique band name with “brothers” in it. Last year, they performed at numerous events including the Ringo Music Festival. They have also traveled all the way to South Korea for a show and have even held a solo concert at Shibuya WWW. They’re a band receiving rapidly growing attention. Their style screams freedom and you can feel that they are enjoying music written from the heart, with lyrics uniquely depicting themes such as girls’ buoyant romance, listlessly passing one another without meeting, and ambivalent emotions. You’ll become addicted to their music as you listen to it. The songs are rooted in indie pop but somewhere in the sound there’s a feeling that you can’t let go which leaves you feeling comfortable somewhere inside.

    An artist who brings to life sophisticated music, from a luxury urban and mellow sound to sentimental folk. Her song Real Love was picked up in the Spotify playlist “Woman’s Voice” and was listened to over 100,000 times in January and February. Her number of overseas fans is also on the rise. She also works as a model. Her music video Everything gives me chance what I love it, in which actress Culumi Nakada also appears, has received praise for its level of quality in looking just like a short film.

    SIRUP

    He flew into the scene like a comet last year with his digital single Synapse. The name “SIRUP” is a combination of “Sing & Rap.” His characteristically deep vocals were influenced by African-American music from soul to R&B. His combination of soul, hip-hop and R&B has particularly been a hit with young music lovers. He is popular for his sophisticated sound that fuse singing and rapping in Japanese and English.

    Curator 2: WREP BATTLEFIELD presents Batotsuku

    Witness an MC battle right before your eyes hosted by Zeebra, a hip-hop artist representing the city of Tokyo, who is bringing the heated MC battle segment from the hip-hop radio channel “WREP” produced by Zeebra himself.

    4 people will be chosen on the day of the event to become team captains and create their own team from 12 appointment battle MCs for a 3-on-3 MC battle.

    A hip-hop MC and member of legendary hip-hop group KGDR. He is also active as a DJ under the name DJ DIRTYKRATES. In 2016, he was appointed the first Shibuya Tourism Night Ambassador. He is not only leads Shibuya’s night scene, but also maintains a responsibility for the places where people can enjoy nightlife as well as cleaning up rubbish after events.

    He also held the Night Mayor Summit discussions took place regarding ways to develop night culture. He is recognised worldwide for being out of the box when it comes to hip-hop.

    Natalie Music have selected a line-up of artists that best represents the “MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON Project” of delivering Japanese pop culture to the world. The line-up includes Atarashii Gakkou no Leaders, MISMOPE, Luby Sparks, SHE IS SUMMER, and more.

    A four-member dance performance unit who stick out from the crowd and demonstrate originality to strengthen today’s boring society and make living fun. They became popular after a collaboration with a commercial for Lotte “Fit’s” which was remixed by tofubeats. They have also performed at Nico Nico Chokaigi 2016 and ULTRA TEEN FES, and middle schoolers have even covered their dances on the video streaming site “MixChannel.” The photos they post on their social media are also a must-see, filled with girl-like freedom and plenty of humour.

    A two-piece band who deliver happy pop tunes that will brighten the day of those who hear them. Even in their songs with sad lyrics you can hear a positivity in there somewhere when the girls sing. Their music is affixed with energy. The vocals are characteristic in the way that they are both innocent and piercing. This is their weapon of choice during live performances in the city. MISMOPE are popular with girls of the same generation, with much interest having been gained in their music videos and outfits. They are also recognised as fashion icons!

    Luby Sparks

    A five-member band made up of university students with an average age of 21. They have created a buzz amongst indie music fans for co-performing with overseas bands and performing at a UK festival. Their list of collaborations with overseas artists is long – they have performed together with artists coming to Japan including The Bilinda Butchers and Manic Sheep, as well as creating a split cassette with YUCK. In 2017, they appeared as the first and only Japanese band to perform at UK music festival “Indietracks Festival.” The band have a growing fan base around the world for their emotional sound.

    SHE IS SUMMER is noted for her discotheque and groovy sound. The gap between the cute voice of MICO and her lyrics that pierce deep into the heart of girls is out of this world.     A group with a cuteness you will want to keep close to you. Their incredibly impressive live performances flood the stage with entertainment. The group have also performed at South-East Asia’s biggest Japanese culture event “JAPAN EXPO THAILAND 2017.” Their overseas activity is spreading far and wide.

    An idol group who formed in 2011 as part of Entertainment Yamaguchikasseikai, a project that was initiated to revitalize Yamaguchi Prefecture by discovering new idols. As well as working as “Furusato Ambassadors” and “Sekai Jamboree Official Supports” to promote the charm of Yamaguchi Prefecture to the rest of Japan, the group also appear as regular members of information programs on TV.     It’s finally March, which means MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON FESTIVAL 2018 in SHIBUYA (MMN Festival) is almost here.

     

    This year’s MMN Festival will move away from the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium and take place around the Shibuya and Harajuku area! We will deliver Japanese culture to the world to the fullest in the form of music, fashion, food, tourist experiences and more from Shibuya.

    This year’s main locations at the MMN Festival are Laforet Museum Harajuku, Tower Records Shibuya, SHIBUYA CAST., and Onden Shrine. All locations are free to enter upon registering in advance.

     

    In this article, we’ll take a look at what content you can expect to see at SHIBUYA CAST.

     

    Going to SHIBUYA CAST at the MMN Festival means you can enjoy Hanami early in Shibuya. Gaze at cherry blossoms while indulging in some traditional Japanese food, matcha sweets, sake and more. There will be stalls selling vegetables, booths where you can get up close and personal with traditional Japanese culture, and more. The market will offer a cuisine and culture experience only possible in Japan.

    MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON (MMN) is set to hold the biggest event for promoting Japanese pop culture to the world, MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON FESTIVAL 2018 in SHIBUYA, across the areas of Shibuya and Harajuku on March 24th and 25th.

     

    Today, we are announcing the main performers as well as some of what you can expect to see at the festival. This year’s MMN FESTIVAL is free entry! But you’ll need to register in advance to attend, so don’t forget!

    MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON FESTIVAL

    There are 4 main areas where the MMN Festival will take place that you need to know about!

     

    A multitude of popular models including Natsume Mito and Yutaro will grace the stage, as well as young artists MAGiC BOYZ. A host of talented personalities will also take to performing including the fortune teller Chamereon Takeda, who has appeared on TV and in magazines, comedian Rei Maruyama, Youtuber Megane and more. Music media company Spincoaster, music website Natalie and hip-hop musician & activist Zeebra will come together to curate a special live performance made up exclusively of must-see acts. Ukon Takafuji, who choreographed the internet-famous “Tokyo Bon 2020” video that blew up online across the globe, will perform a traditional Japanese dance show and ‘Bon Odori’ performance. There will also be a selection of must-try original foods and popular sweets that you can only get at this festival.

    Popular fortune-teller Chamereon Takeda will take to the stage. Japanese model Hikari Shibata will have her fortune told by the expert through horoscopes.     A must-see in this area will be the traditional Japanese dance show put on by Ukon Takafuji, the producer and chairman of “JAPAN CULTURE ENTERTAINMENT -YUMENOYA-” and the second generation of the company “Takafuji Dance Company,” a pioneer of traditional Japanese dance that boasts a history of 100 years. Not only will there be classic Bon Odori hits playing, but also a performance of Tokyo Bon 2020 choreographed by Ukon Takafuji himself, a song co-produced with “COOL JAPAN TV” that has taken the world by storm. A range of artists and people from the music media who have hooked up with talented new musicians will become official curators at the event and recommend promising artists.     A traditional day held at Onden Shrine is ‘Ennichi’. Look forward to strolling along the festival walk and tucking into some festive food at the indispensable food carts, trying your luck at the classic yo-yo fishing, and more. We will also set up a stage at the shrine where you can listen to traditional Japanese gagaku, or ancient imperial court music, as well as a character DJ festival where many different well-known characters will perform. You’ll be spoiled for choice on where to begin at the festival, and there’s plenty for both kids and adults to enjoy.

  • Godfather of Kawaii Sebastian Masuda Celebrates 30 Years in Showbiz with Pop-Up Shop at Roppongi Hills

    Sebastian Masuda is a powerhouse of all things cute. From starting the popular Harajuku-based brand 6%DOKIDOKI in 1995 to creating the now-legendary music video for Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s PONPONPON, Masuda is now celebrating 30 years in the industry. An exhibition of the artist’s works will be shown in an upcoming exhibition in both Tokyo and Osaka from Fall 2021 until 2022. Prior to that, a Sebastian Masuda pop-up shop is coming to Roppongi Hills and Shibuya PARCO starting this month!

     

    From September 23 until October 17, the art goods brand Sebastian Masuda ART will hold a pop-up shop within the Mori Art Museum Shop on the third floor of Roppongi Hills West Walk. In addition to the latest art goods, including the brand-new ‘Inner Voyage’ series, a number of Masuda’s colorful art pieces will be on display, with some being for sale.

  • Basketball Culture Space TOKYO 23 Reopens on Cat Street in Harajuku

    TOKYO 23, a shop promoting basketball culture, is set to reopen as a large-scale shop in Harajuku on September 18, 2021.

  • Wakayama Culture Festival 2021 Coming to Shibuya

    The Kinokuni Wakayama Culture Festival 2021, taking place in Wakayama Prefecture from October 30 to November 21, is the one of the largest cultural festival in Japan.   • YUZU, 24 Artists to Participate in Japanese Pixel Art Exhibition

    Produced by art project production group WATOWA GALLERY, the YUZU x Shibuya Pixel Art YUZUTOWN Special Exhibition will be open at elephant STUDIO in Shibuya starting September 15! The theme of this year’s event is ‘bringing courage to Shibuya during the Coronavirus pandemic.’

     

    SHIBUYA PIXEL ART, one of the world’s biggest pixel art contests and festivals, has been held in Shibuya each year since 2017. The area was called ‘Bit Valley’ in the late 1990s.

     

    The YUZUTOWN Special Exhibition will commemorate the release of popular J-pop duo YUZU’s 15th album, YUZUTOWN. A total of 24 artists will be exhibiting and selling their pixel art creations, including Kazuko Shibuya, who has provided works for some of Japan’s most famous fantasy RPGs such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Shigetaka Kurita, immortalized in the MoMA as the creator of ‘emoji,’, and eBoy, who provided the album cover for YUZUTOWN, will also be in attendance.

  • Twin Fashion Icons AMIAYA Release Photobook with STREET Magazine

    Tokyo fashion icons and twin unit AMIAYA have collaborated with street-snap magazine STREET on a new photobook! ‘AMIAYA x STREET TOKYO FASHION 2021ss’ will go on sale August 23 at select bookstores and online.

     

     

    AMIAYA began their fashion journey in street fashion when they were teenagers, and are currently attracting worldwide attention as icons representing Tokyo style. STREET magazine has been highlighting unique international streetwear since its first issue in 1985, and both parties are using this collaboration to help the fashion industry, which has been adversely affected by the pandemic.

    A ‘Harvest’ Experience Full Of Disney

    The Harvest store is decorated with wood and greenery,  built using both new and recycled goods made from waste materials.

     

     

    The menu represents the four seasons of Japan by combining Japanese culture and natural motifs with designs inspired by Mickey and Friends.

     

     

    The back of the store is taken up by a huge white Mickey Mouse statue, standing 1.7m tall. The statues outfit and display changes based on the season, welcoming guests as a symbol of the store. Limited merchandise based on the statue’s hand towel and muffled designs are scheduled to be released in the future. 

     

     

    BGM

    The store background music is full of timeless and beloved tunes, perfect for relaxing in a cafe. Songs have been selected from Disneyland Records and Burns Vista Records, both popular since the 1950’s, including legendary Disney tunes from the Sherman Brothers and Annette.

    You can also hear rare tracks sung by Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and other disney characters within the playlist.
