MOSHI MOSHI BOX Questionnaire to 100 Foreigners: #1 “What’s the tastiest food you have eaten in Japan?”

13.March.2018 | FEATURES / FOOD / Uncategorized

Hi, everyone. I’m Shiota, the director of the MOSHI MOSHI BOX.

We are starting a new series where we ask questions to 100 overseas visitors to Japan. We will give questionnaires to foreign tourists that come into the MOSHI MOSHI BOX related to Japan and announce the results on the website.

For the first entry, we asked 100 people from overseas “What’s the tastiest food you have eaten in Japan?” Answers varied from traditional Japanese food that you can probably guess to other unexpected choices. Let’s take a look at the ranking!

1st Place: Sushi (43 Votes)
Coming in 1st place is sushi which is nearly double that of the 2nd place result! The view must be that Japanese food = sushi. There were lots of opinions by people expressing their love for sushi like the ones below.

”It’s totally different from the food in Germany! The fish and rice are delicious.” (Kasey/Australia)

・”The sushi I ate at Tsukiji was the freshest and most delicious in the world.” (Mary/Hong Kong)
・”I don’t like the sushi in my country all that much, but eating it in Japan is delicious.” (Nadia/US)
・”I love the tuna! I really love the tuna!!” (Kyle/Brazil)

2nd Place: Ramen (23 Votes)
Ramen received a lot of support among males. It seems that rich flavours such as tonkotsu and Iekei are popular.

”I tried to imitate making ramen once in Chile but it it’s no match for Japan’s ramen!” (Cristobal /Chile)

・”Ramen isn’t well known in my country. I can only eat it in Japan, so I feel great today!” (Mark/Australia)
・”I had Iekei ramen. I like fatty things, so it was really satisfying.” (Costa Rica)

3rd Place: Okonomiyaki (10 Votes)
You can enjoy many variations of okonomiyaki depending on the ingredients. A great thing about it is that you can make it yourself.

”There was cheese inside, but it was so good together with the sauce.” (Mario/UK)

・”I love rich flavoured things. The sauce is the best!” (Denis/France)
・”I’m happy that I can make it myself, it’s fun.” (Naomi/US)

Other Answers

Karaage:
“It’s like friend chicken but even tastier.” (Carld/US)

Crepes:

“I wanted to eat crepes in Harajuku! They were delicious.” (Wan/Hong Kong)

Tempura Soba:

・”I like it because the flavour of the soup is light. The crunchy texture of the tempura batter is nice too.” (Himana/Argentin)

Katsu Curry:

“I love Japanese curry. The fact that it has katsu too makes it amazing!” (Emily/Australia)

Japanese-Style Breakfast:

“I ate breakfast at a hotel. With just a small quantity I was amazed at the number of items that were served.” (UK)

Ochazuke:

“I don’t have it in my country, so I was astonished, but it was delicious. It’s an innovative idea, it’s great.” (Philippines)

Roast Beef Don:

“I ate at the famous ‘Red Rock’ and it was the best! I could see why everyone was lined up.” (South Korea)

Did you like our first questionnaire? There was a lot of food on the list that Japanese people love too, but it’s interesting to see it from different points of view.

If you have any questions about anything or ideas that you want us to cover then send us a message on our Facebook page!

We’ll continue to hold more questionnaires with overseas tourists at the MOSHI MOSHI BOX, so be sure to drop by if you’re in Harajuku!

  • In the world-famous movie, Star Wars, you can find many elements of Japanese samurai culture.

As many of you might know, George Lucas is a big fan of Kurosawa Akira’s movies and it is a famous story that he offered Toshiro Mifune, an actor who played in many of Kurosawa’s movies, the part of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars.

This time, I joined the course called “Samurai Training” held by the kimono rental shop, “Yumenoya” in Asakusa to enjoy STAR WARS™/Jedi Challenges to the fullest.

To get to Yumenoya, go through the Kaminarimon and turn right at Nakamisedori. And you will see it on your right. Look for the mannequin wearing a kimono.

It is just a 5 minutes on foot from Asakusa station on Tokyo Metro Ginza line. It’s in a very convenient location.

You must wear wafuku (traditional Japanese clothes) to participate in Samurai Training. There are many kinds of kimonos available.

This time, I chose a red kimono which looks strong.

Now Ruki’s ready to meet the challenge. She learned how to hold a katana and make a stroke pose.

Today’s teacher is Ukon Takafuji who is the second generation of “Buto Takafujiryu” from Kanazawa-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture.

In addition to offering lectures, both in Japan and abroad, he established an exercise routine called, “Katana Exercise” to introduce the charms of traditional arts.

Now let’s start the training program. Get dressed in your “furisode” and let’s begin the battle!

First, Ruki learned how to bow.

Ruki “the Katana is much longer than I thought it would be and it’s difficult to use.

After rehearsing for 30 minutes, Luki could use the katana fairy well.

And now let’s beggingSTAR WARS™/Jedi Challenges.

This isSTAR WARS™/Jedi Challenges which Lenovo developed. First , download the Jedi Challenges application and set your smartphone in the goggle.

The models which this app can be used are iPhone 6, Plus, iPhone X, Galaxy 7, edge, S8, Pixel / Pixel XL, LG G6, Moto Z2 Force Edition and Android smartphones.

English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese are can be used. (2018 January )

First, connect the light saver and smartphone to Bluetooth. It’s good its wireless.

It’s much lighter than you would think and it won’t slip because it has a good grip.

This light saver is just like a real thing in every detail. Just by looking at it, you can enjoy the world view of this game.

Fasten the the smartphone to the goggles as is instructed in the app. It cannot be used with other apps.

It is also recommended that you turn your banner off so that it’s not interrupt your game.

When you put your AR goggles on, a 360 degree 3D image will appear. Look around and you can enter the world Star Wars.

The half invisible characters will appear as life-sized characters. You can experience the scene where Princess Leia asks Obi-Wan for help - the best scene in EP4.

If you play the game in the darkened room the images will be even clear and the atmosphere will be awesome.

There are 3 types of games in total, however the best game is “light saver battle.”
In this game you can actually fight with the characters that appeared in the story using the light saver.

“I can see the light saver!” says Ruki in excitement. If it was for real you would have to do special training to be able to use the light saver. But in this game it is so easy to use. The power of technology is amazing. Thank you, Lenovo!!

At the early stage you can successfully finish but as the stages advance you enemies will become stronger and stronger. This time it is battle with Darth Maul. The life-size characters coming this way look so real-looking. Ruki looks like he is going to run away.

In the light saver battle, you have to stop you opponent’s light saver and then duck your opponent’s light saver, all the while looking for a moment for you to attack. Using AR you can experience a real battle scene. A hint will appear momentarily on the screen to suggest to you how to convey a big damage when your opponent is off guard. You have a chance to cause major damage. Don’t miss this chance. While you are playing this game you will no doubt be moving about, so make sure that there are no obstacles in your way and it is best to play the game in a wide space.

Ruki: “When you cut your opponent with the light saver, the light saver shakes and it is as if it is for real. It really feels like you have entered the world of the movie.”

Using sword-work learned directly from teacher Ukon, and after a desperate struggle, somehow you were able to win over Darth Maul.
The light saver is not for real but this is the way you will feel.

We finished Samurai training and got a certificate.

Overall Luki becoming a closer to be Jedi...?

In addition, STAR WARS™/Jedi Challenge includes other games.

Your concentration and strategy will be tested in Holochess.
By making best use of the aliens in this game you are trying to increase your territory in the chessboard.

This is a strategy game where rebel forces fight with the mighty empire forces.
Enlarge your front line bases and repel the empire forces!

You might be able to become a Jedi by playing STAR WARS™/Jedi Challenge!

May the force be with you!

Hello everyone! My name is Shiota and I am the curator of MOSHI MOSHI BOX Harajuku Tourist Information Center.

There are many photo spots in Harajuku gathering much attention on TV programs and SNS.

The kimono she is wearing is yellow/green which are colors that suit this spring season. The color of the obi (band) is the same as the color of the kimono so it has a settled-look and it is suitable to walk around town in this kimono.

  • New Sake ‘&Soda’ Made Exclusively to be Mixed with Soda Water

    29.September.2022 | FOOD

Shiragiku Sake Brewery will release a special sake made exclusively to mix with soda water on October 1, 2022. The beverage will be available in Okayama Prefecture.   The company’s interest in creating a new sake culture led them to develop &Soda, a delicious sake made to be mixed with soda. This may be helpful for those who don’t know much about sake, or who may feel intimidated by the many different types. Being able to mix it with soda will make sake drinking feel more casual.

Sake Made Exclusively for Mixing with Soda Water, ‘&Soda’

“Many people may like to mix sake with soda water or drink it on the rocks. By doing this, however, a nice sake may lose its flavor, and the drinker might be wasting a nice sake for the sake of a more easy-drinking beverage. &Soda was made exclusively to be mixed. Using Asahi Rice, a specialty in Okayama Prefecture, and water from the brewery, we’ve created a sake that has the proper aroma and sweetness. These characteristics will come through even after being mixed! The alcohol content has been increased to 18 percent, and the package will make the product easy to find and understand,” a statement from the brewery reads.   For more information on how to enjoy &Soda, please see the special website below!

The hybrid restaurant has taken over the entire top floor of GINZA PLACE, which is directly connected to Ginza Station. Overlooking the Ginza 4-chome intersection, it’s a gorgeous place to enjoy some authentic Japanese cuisine. Honten Yamashina mainly uses fully-matured Omi beef, the highest grade available among Shiga Prefecture’s top-tier beef, from Okazaki Farm. The cows are allowed to fatten for a considerable amount of time and live stress-free lives for over 40 months. Less than 1% of all Wagyu cattle are shipped after 24 months of age, and this delectable meat is characterized by its sharp taste and fattiness.

  • Long-Established Sake Brewery in Yamagata Prefecture Helps Create SAKE COLA

    13.July.2022 | FOOD

Aiming to create a new kind of drinking culture, Aika in Gunma Prefecture has started preorders for SAKE COLA, a new cola liquor, on the crowdfunding site Makuake.    People love cola for its strong carbonation, sweetness, and distinctive spicy flavor. SAKE COLA has a complex, multi-layered aroma and refreshing sweetness offering a unique taste that no one has tasted before. In creating SAKE COLA, the company attempted to keep the authentic sweetness of sake. To this end, they decided to work with Rokkasen, a long-established sake brewery in Yamagata.    Rokkasen’s authentic rice-based shochu Goujoppari is brewed in the cold like sake and distilled like a ginjo sake. It has a beautiful citrus aroma and tastes similar in sweetness despite having zero sugar. Using Goujoppari as a base, malted rice is used to produce a mild, natural sweetness, and the spices added to the drink meld with the citrus scent to create a flavor defying imagination. The flavor and aroma of SAKE COLA spread in the mouth, with the spices and herbs lingering on the tongue. The spices were mixed by Hayashi Oki, who studied in Alsace, France before working as a pastry chef at one of Tokyo’s top patisseries.    Mace, the key spice, is characterized by its sweet and somewhat pungent aroma. It’s used to recreate the caramelized taste that is found in most cola.  Along with that, tonka beans, containing the natural sweeteners Vanillin and Coumarin, were blended into the mix to create a soft, lingering flavor. Customers are sure to enjoy it from the first sip to the last. SAKE COLA can be enjoyed at any time. It’s perfect for enjoying as an aperitif, and it can also be enjoyed with a meal, like beer or wine.  Like whiskey, it can also be enjoyed while relaxing after a meal. At Christmas time, it can be added to warm red wine or served as an affogato with ice cream and a splash of liqueur. How would you like to try this unique creation?

The collab makes sense, as the anime series takes place in Shizuoka Prefecture. Bottles sold out incredibly fast, so it’s no wonder that the brewery has now opened orders for the 2022 batch! The special products will be available on June 4, just in time for Father’s Day. Customers can choose from the Junmai Ginjo or Junmai Daiginjo varieties.   Junmai Ginjo Papa Hiroshi Vintage 2022   Junmai Daiginjo Papa Hiroshi Vintage 2022The Junmai Ginjo Papa Hiroshi Vintage 2022 was made with water, rice, and yeast from Shizuoka, where the series takes place. With a refreshing aroma and a gentle sweetness derived from the Homarefuji rice, the flavor is sure to arouse your palate!   The original label featured on the bottle shows Papa Hiroshi enjoying local sake with tuna sashimi from Shizuoka with Mt. Fuji in the background. All bottles will come with a paper box featuring a similar design. The turtle on the label is the symbol of Hatsukame Brewing! It’s recommended that customers drink their sake with local tuna–it’s the perfect combination.   The Daiginjo variety is made from rare Aiyama rice, known as the ‘Diamond of Sake Rice.’ Polished and carefully prepared by hand, the aroma of the sake is reminiscent of tropical fruits.
