28.July.2019 | FEATURES / FOOD

Situated  on the northern shore of Kyushu is Fukuoka Prefecture, a hot spot for tourists and travellers both Japanese and foreign, particularly those visiting from parts of Asia such as China, Taiwan and South Korea.

When it comes to amazing Japanese food, Fukuoka is high on the list, home to a bounty of restaurants including some seriously stylish and kawaii ones.

Today, we are joined by foodie and Instagrammer moe who travels up and down Fukuoka dining at its many cafes for a bite of lunch or dessert. Using photos she has snapped on her days out, moe has listed 6 must-try fancy lunches you can order in Fukuoka.

Niku to Wain Haneushi in Ropponmatsu

Niku to Wain Haneushi is famous for its Saga beef which is matured on the bone in house for no less than two months. In the evenings they serve delicious steak for dinner, but during the day they whip up a seriously gorgeous and very affordable lunch menu. Their menchi-katsu, which is a breaded and deep fried ground meat patty, is served hot and fresh and retains the succulent juices of the meat. The next thing I’m looking forward to trying is their beef tongue.

Business Hours: Lunch 11:00-15:30 / Dinner 17:30-22:30

Shinobumeshi in Ropponmatsu

In the backstreets of Ropponmatsu is Shinobumeshi whose dishes provide a good balance of different foods. Their menu changes each day. The meal in the photo is their tender seafood katsu set. The katsu is deliciously crunchy and the okara soy pulp is to die for. It also comes with three little plates so your belly is sure to be full afterwards!

moku in Hakozaki

The building that moku is located in is a refurbished traditional house. It’s a fancy and stylish looking cafe but they have kids chairs and a kids menu too making it the ideal choice for families with children.

I ordered the seafood caponata with sauce aurore. This pasta dish is packed full of healthy vegetables and fresh seafood that is bound to delight your tastebuds.

Shokudo Chez Moi in Befu, Jonan

Chez Moi is a European style restaurant that centres on French cuisine. The vegetables used in making their dishes are sourced in various places in Fukuoka Prefecture including the city of Fukuoka, Itoshima in the west, Asakura in the south central region, and elsewhere. This lunch plate gleams vibrant colours, with the centrepiece being the chestnut pork which is surrounded by lots of different veggies that are fun to pick to enjoy their individual flavours.

The dessert plate too is a cute work of art♡

Café 62 Banchi in Nishitetsu Hirao

Famous for its homemade brad, Café 62 Banchi is located in a renovated room of an apartment. Pictured above is the “One Plate Lunch” which has a good balance of nutrients and is fun to pick at from the many choices on the plate.

Papparayray in Akasaka

Papparayray is popular for its rainbow coloured desserts which are piled with floral flowers and multicoloured fruits. My photo shows off their avocado and rolled oat salad. Rolled oats sit deliciously under the hearty bed of avocado. And the simple salt and olive oil seasoning is simply exquisite. No matter what vegetable is on your plate at this place, it’s sure to be fit for the gods.

    green bean to bar CHOCOLATE

I ordered two different mousses together with my coffee, both exclusive to this Fukuoka branch of the cafe chain. On the left is the Vietnam x Hojicha and on the right is the Tanzania With Crumble. The cacao beans in both are sourced in separate locations. You can order several different flavours to combine with your mousse. As well as hojicha there is sesame seed, mikan and more. The mousse is crafted with a beautiful spiral shape that screams Instagram-worthy at whatever angle you point your camera at. You can even order them for takeout♡

Though the Houjicha Latte is a pure white colour it still has that proper houjicha taste to it. Their puddings are a must-try too and can be ordered for takeout but they were all sold out on this day. Their bouncy puddings are really popular, so if you see them on sale there you should definitely pick one up!

NO COFFEE promotes a coffee lifestyle with their contemporary decor and drinks. The drinks in the photos are the matcha latte with espresso and frozen banana mocha.

The matcha latte mixes sweet matcha latte with a shot of full-bodied espresso to create a refreshing combination. The frozen banana mocha is my personal favourite and a perfect choice for when the weather’s hot. The cafe is also a concept shop that sells a variety of miscellaneous items.

  • See Hundreds of Japanese Wind Chimes at Nyoirin-ji Temple Festival in Fukuoka

    13.July.2019 | FEATURES / SPOT

Fukuoka is a tourist hot spot of Japan, bustling with tourists and travellers both from the island nation and those from overseas, especially from China, Taiwan and South Korea.

Situated on the northern shore of Japan’s Kyushu Island, Fukuoka offers amazing shopping experiences and serves up some of the most delicious gourmet cuisine at its rows of restaurants. But nothing compares to its bountiful sightseeing splendours.

Rie is an Instagrammer who travels to all the different sightseeing spots Kyushu has to offer which she documents on her Instagram page. Today, she gives us a special look at one her most recommended places to visit in Fukuoka: Nyoirin-ji Temple.

Nyoirin-ji Temple is often nicknamed “Frog Temple” due to the many frogs you can see at the temple grounds, a rare sight at a Japanese temple. It’s located in Fukuoka Prefecture’s city of Ogori which can be reached by catching a Nishitetsu Tenjin Ōmuta Line train from Tenjin in the heart of Fukuoka and getting off at Mitsusawa Station. From there the temple is just a 15-minute walk.

Nyoirin-ji Temple is the home of thousands of frogs. A lot of the frog ornaments and items at the temple were collected by the temple’s chief priest.

There’s one ornament which you can take a photo through as seen above, so you should definitely try taking one yourself in your own way. You can even get a goshuin stamp with a frog illustration too if you take your goshuincho stamp book.

The frogs are a given at the Frog Temple, but a must-see is the Wind Chime Festival which is currently running until September. The temple entrance onward is decorated with lots of cute and colourful wind chimes.

Up the stairs you can walk through a wind chime tunnel which gives you a cool, refreshed feeling even in the hot summer.

It costs ¥500 for one wind chime which you can write your wish on before hanging up. You can’t take them home however so be cautious of that!

Nyoirin-ji Temple was built in 729. It is home to a Cintāmaṇicakra statue which is a rare sight in Japan. It is also a registered cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture. It’s not just a location for kawaii adoration―it has been long been loved by locals since ancient times and has a long history.

The wind chimes will be strung up until the end of September. Their gentle ring is sure to make you feel at peace, so why not try dressing up in a yukata like Rie and experiencing the festival for yourself?

Rie has many other examples of popular tourist destinations from around Kyushu on her Instagram page. Be sure to give her a follow if you’re planning a trip to Kyushu yourself!

  • Q-pot Cafe’s Dreamy Sailor Moon Afternoon Tea | Food Review

    24.July.2019 | ANIME&GAME / FEATURES / FOOD

Hey, readers. I’m Midori from MMN’s editorial team.

Sailor Moon fans are going to want to visit Q-pot right now―a cafe in Omotesando that makes desserts that look like real accessories―as the cafe is currently collaborating with the franchise. The inside of the cafe has been transformed into a cute and magical Sailor Moon world, the kind you could only imagine in your dreams. It has blown up since it opened on June 30 across Japanese social media.

There was no way I was going to miss a chance to eat here, so I took a trip to Q-pot to see what kind of kawaii things they had on the menu for the collaboration.

You’ll know Q-pot when you see it in Omotesando by the pouring teapot on the wall next to the menu outside.

Strung up at the entrance are lots of ema plaques where people write their wishes and goals.

As soon as you step inside the cafe you are transported into a world of cute. The various chocolate and biscuit decorations on the wall are just plain kawaii. It gets you excited to start eating♡

I started by ordering the drink set which comes with the Moon Twilight Soda and Tuxedo Night Mocha. The soda contains berries and its lemon and apple flavour gives it a sweet and sour taste. The pink gradation is cute too♡

The mocha takes inspiration from Tuxedo Mask flying through the city at night. The rim of the glass is lined with sparkly sugar. The drink isn’t just an ordinary cafe mocha – it secretly contains a sweet strawberry flavour which adds an enchanting aftertaste.

Next I tried the Transformation Brooch Macaron Cake. Shaped as a macaron, this cake is based by the brooch necklace which Usagi uses to transform into Sailor Moon. It’s served on a ribbon-shaped plate which you can take home with you. The cake is filled with apricot and mango mousse inside which is pineapple♡

On top of the macaron is another exquisite macaron containing lemon jelly. The jelly and fruit sparkle to create a girly and gorgeous dessert. After you’ve eaten you can take the plate back to use at home!

And now for the crowning jewel: the Sailor Moon Afternoon Tea Set! This is one that anybody is going to crave when seeing it. It comes with two plate packed with food and desserts. The ribbon at the top is cute too.

The upper tier is adorned with macarons, mousse cakes, cookie sandwiches, and glass desserts.

The lower tier has sandwiches, vichyssoise soup, and olive and tomato pinchos.

The glass dessert is a raspberry mousse topped with Sailor Moon’s Moon Stick. The mousse is fluffy and very tasty. The sourness of the berries isn’t too strong either – it’s a nice and light flavour.

When biting into the mousse cakes your mouth is filled with the gentle sweetness of the white chocolate.

Macarons are a popular dessert at Q-pot. The Sailor Moon ones are bite-sized and almost seem a waste to eat because of how cute they are. The cookie sandwiches, which are based on Luna and Artemis, are stuffed with lemon cream which has a refreshing taste. The cookies also have a delicious buttery flavour.

The lower tier sandwiches contain duck and broccoli. The sandwiches are small but you get a lot of veg so you won’t go hungry. The soup is great not just as a light meal but as a palate cleanser after the desserts too. Try eating some when your stomach says it’s full from all the sweet stuff!

My belly was pretty full after this afternoon tea set. I recommend ordering it for lunch.

If you’re looking for a place to eat out with your girl friends when why not enter the fairy tale world of Q-pot for the Sailor Moon collaboration? Q-pot even has its own merchandise too so be sure to check it out!

After the ice cream is made, it is mixed with plenty of French black truffles, making a flavor like no other.
