Elementary School Music Group Foorin Produced by Kenshi Yonezu Release New Single ‘Paprika’

15.August.2018 | MUSIC

Foorin is a music unit made up of elementary school children with music and lyrics produced entirely by Kenshi Yonezu. Their new single Paprika was released on August 15, 2018 with regular and limited editions.

Paprika was written by Yonezu as part of the NHK 2020 Song Project which was set up to cheer on everybody in the run up to 2020 and beyond. The song is also being used for NHK’s TV and radio program Minna no Uta for August and September.

Foorin was chosen for this project through an audition process. The group is made up of five girls and boys including main vocalists Hyuuga (Elementary Year 6) and Moena (Elementary Year 5), and chorus and dancers Takeru (Elementary Year 6), Ririko (Elementary Year 3) and Chise (Elementary Year 2). Their name comes from the Japanese word Fuurin meaning ‘wind chime’ which Kenshi Yonezu compared their singing and dancing of Paprika to.

The single’s first press limited edition comes in 7-inch cardboard packaging and includes a folded lyric card that can be used as a poster, sheet music, and a DVD that features the title song’s music video that was taken in one cut, a ‘teacher video’ by Tomohiko Tsujimoto and Koharu Sugawara who are responsible for creating the choreography, and an alternative Paprika music video.

Comments from Kenishi Yonezu on composing Paprika:

Recalling one’s childhood is a major theme in the recent music scene, so I decided to create a song directly aimed at children. I believed that to be able to create something that kids enjoy honestly, you have to reflect your life from a child’s perspective and begin from a place that doesn’t make light of them. I hope the kids that listen to this song will see it as food for living their small worlds lively and with energy.
