Yoshiki Covers ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ in New Wonda Coffee Commercial

14.March.2020 | FOOD / MUSIC

Asahi Soft Drinks released a new television commercial in Japan on Tuesday for its Wonda X-BITTER black coffee drink which features Japanese singer-songwriter and musician Yoshiki.

The commercial is centred around making a fresh start, which is where Yoshiki’s own arrangement of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star comes into play. We see him abducted in a UFO in comical style and then perform his own transcendent cover of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in a forest.

As he sits in the evening forest, Yoshiki takes a sip of Wonda X-BITTER, after which a blue light shines down on him, signifying the turning of a new leaf. A boy looks at him in wonder as he begins to perform the song, and then agape as Yoshiki is beamed up by the UFO.

Yoshiki expressed his desire to add his own arrangement to the song on the day the video was shot and wrote the music score there and then. He went to practice the song alone in the studio after writing it, and in almost no time at all, returned for the main shoot. The staff couldn’t hide their astonishment at Yoshiki’s musical talent.

YOSHIKI Interview

Q: Please tell us which scene most left an impression on you, or a particular scene that you want people to look out for.
Yoshiki: Definitely the last scene when I fly up into the sky. I found that scene really amusing where I’m taken by the UFO together with the piano. The piano playing starts off super simple, but the performance quickly escalates into something complex. Be sure to check that out.

Q: Did you have to do any prep for this commercial shoot?
Yoshiki: I researched “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” I wondered, how can I make this song that everyone knows interesting? I also studied Mozart’s arrangement.

Q: What’s a time when you have to concentrate during your everyday life?
Yoshiki: It’s got to be when I’m writing music. It’s the kind of work where you make something from nothing, so you need some serious concentration skills. When I’m composing, I mostly don’t use any instruments. I work by writing music notes down on a blank sheet, so there are times when I go to concentrate for an hour, or two hours, and before I know it half the day has already gone.”

  • Baccarat Crystal Commissions YOSHIKI to Design Piece for 180th Anniversary

    07.October.2021 | FASHION / MUSIC

X JAPAN leader YOSHIKI was one of eleven designers chosen to submit an original design for Baccarat, commemorating the 180th anniversary of the crystal manufacturer’s Harcourt glass. The work was unveiled at Paris Fashion Week in Fall 2021.

Baccarat is a manufacturer of fine crystal founded in 1764 in the Lorraine region of France. The company’s iconic Harcourt glass features a hexagonal base with three-button feet and is known as a timeless and iconic symbol of the brand.

This year marks the 180th anniversary of the glass, which was first created during the time of Louis Philippe I. It’s hard to believe that these pieces have been on the tables of royalty for almost two centuries!

YOSHIKIMONO, the kimono brand created by YOSHIKI, has been featured at Tokyo Fashion Week multiple times. In 2020, his works were shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK, along with the Tokyo National Museum.

Known for his blend of rock and classical music, YOSHIKI continues to express his individuality in both his sound and fashion taste. From the front, the glass looks to be on fire, while from the top, there is a sense that a poisonous flower is taking bloom. The work is a one-of-a-kind blend of east and west and was a new challenge for the performer.

    Comment from YOSHIKI

“I am honored to have been chosen as a designer for the 180th anniversary of Baccarat’s Harcourt glass. I’d like everyone to also keep an eye out for some new music coming soon. Thank you to all of the fans who continue supporting me in everything I do.”

  • Key Coffee Releases Limited Edition 1920’s Blend

    20.July.2021 | FOOD

Key Coffee has recreated its coffee from 1920’s when the cafe chain first opened. Named the Yokohama 1920 Founding Blend, the coffee was released on July 20 and will be available at their 54 branches up and down Japan until August 24, the same date when the coffee shop first opened.

    Milk Brûlée

Yokohama 1920 Founding Blend recreates the same flavour of coffee that the cafe served in 1920 when it first opened in Yokohama, an area bustling with restaurants serving both Asian and Western cuisine. It uses Brazilian coffee beans at its base, a type which was circulated a lot at the time. It has a distinct sweet fragrance and goes well with milk and sugar.

Back them, coffee was a commodity yearned for by the people of Japan. After releasing their hit coffee syrup in 1921, Key Coffee began serving coffee in a way that was simple, tasty, and accessible to everyone such as drip coffee and their Noi coffee-making series. In the 1930’s their products began to line the shelves of department stores as they began to develop as a spearhead for the emergence of coffee culture in Japan. They also began selling TOARCO TORAJA in 1978, a highly-regarded premium coffee. Today, the chain continues to be a hub for coffee lovers, and is creating new coffees and techniques.

Japan has been a boom in junkissa in recent years, a classic cafe which blends the atmosphere of the Meiji and Showa periods. Key Coffee is showcasing two coffees on their recipe page which capture this flair including an espresso con panna and milk brûlée.
