  • Kaori’s Easy Recipe: Learn to Make Pompompurin Gomaku Onigiri

    19.May.2019 | FEATURES / FOOD

With just a small bit of ingenuity, turn everyday food into something cute using Kaori’s easy recipe! With a few simple ideas, an ordinary recipe magically transforms into a cute dish.

In this recipe, you’ll learn how to make Pompompurin gomaku rice balls that’s perfect for picnics and lunch boxes. Gomaku is a mix of minced meat and vegetables with rice. These rice balls can be made easily with ingredients found in stores or at the market.

    1. Ingredients

Store bought gomaku rice mix (五目ごはん)

    Rice (I used 2 cups)

    2 eggs

    Starch

    1/2 meatball

    Pasta (cooking instructions below)

    2. Mix the gomaku rice mix into the rice.

    3. Divide your rice mix into two portions, shape into a head for Pompompurin’s face, and leave to cool.

I made a video for you to follow the next steps!

    1. Frying the egg

①Whisk the egg and then strain through a strainer, using a fork to push through any remains.

②Add the starch which has been dissolved in water into the strained mix.

✩By adding watered starch it makes the egg less likely to break and easier to wrap later on.

③Lower the temperature of the pan from medium down to a low heat.

④Once the temperature has fully come down add the egg and ensure it covers the entirety of the pan.

⑤After turning the pan around lower the heat again. Once the egg has fully set, turn off the stove and put on a lid to let the egg cook with the heat of the pan.

    2. Place the cooked egg onto some cling film, add the rice mix, and wrap into a ball until fully sealed.

    3. Use the leftover egg from the seal to cut out some ears for Pompompurin.

    4. Use half of a store-bought meatball and fix to the top of Pompompurin’s head with fried pasta to make a hat.

To make fried pasta, add the length of pasta required to a frying pan without oil and cook by starting on a low heat and slowly bringing to a medium heat. Turn off the stove once the pasta has coloured slightly.

Use the remaining heat of the pan to cook until browned like in the photo below. Fried pasta is a useful ingredient for various recipes where you need to fix decorations onto food, so be sure to try it out with other things too.

    5. Use seaweed to make his eyes and nose and ham for the cheeks.

    And your Pompompurin is finished!

The fried egg can be prepared the day before meaning you can make up your lunch box nice and quickly in the morning. It’s super convenient learning to make a good use of the ingredients you have at home♡

  • Kaori’s Easy Recipe: Learn to Make Pompompurin Sweet Potato Tarts

    04.May.2019 | FEATURES / FOOD

With just a small bit of ingenuity, turn everyday food into something cute using Kaori’s easy recipe! With a few simple ideas, an ordinary recipe magically transforms into a cute dish.

In this recipe, you’ll learn how to make Pompompurin sweet potato tarts using all ingredients you can buy on the market. Despite being so simple to make, its appearance makes it look as though you’ve put a lot of work into making it. Though spring is bringing the warmth with it, these tarts won’t melt, so they’re perfect as gifts♡

    Ingredients/Materials

    Store bought tart cases

Store bought sweet potato kit (I bought mine from MUJI)

    1. Deposit and mix according to your sweet potato package instructions.

From that prepare 15g x 2 for the ears, 5g x 2 for the hands, and 15g for the hat. Shape the ears with a water drop-shaped cutter, the hands with an oval-shaped cutter, and the hat with a round-shaped cutter.

I made mine according to the MUJI kit I bought as shown in the photo below.

    2. Smear the remaining batter into the tart case. Be sure to do this gently so as to not crack the tart.

    3. Mix egg yolk with a little bit of water and smear across the surface. When doing this step make sure to flatten out any cracks.

✩Gently smearing with your hand is better than using a brush or spatula. It will make it look more beautiful.

    4. Once you have coated the surface as pictured below it’s time to get cooking. My MUJI sweet potato kit instructions say to bake at 180℃ for 10 minutes, but since we’re making Pompompurin we don’t want it to brown, so cook at 150℃ for 10 minutes. After the 10-minutes is up it’s to add the ears, hands and hat. Place them on, reduce the temperature to 140℃ and cook for a further 5-10-minutes.

You may need to adjust times and temperature according to your oven to ensure no browning.

    5. Once it’s cooked, leave to fully cool. You can then proceed to start drawing Purin’s eyes. Please reference the video I made below♪

I fixed the parts on with chocolate as you’ll see in the video. I then cut up some strawberries for Purin to hold and finally drew on the eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Kaori’s Easy Recipe: Learn to Make a Pompompurin Cookie Shot

    10.February.2019 | FEATURES / FOOD

With just a small bit of ingenuity, turn everyday food into something cute using Kaori’s easy recipe! With a few simple ideas, an ordinary recipe magically transforms into a cute dish.

In this recipe you’ll learn how to make a “Pompompurin Cookie Shot,” perfect for Valentine’s Day! It may look difficult but I have made it so it’s nice and easy to make!

    1: Ingredients/Equipment

    2 glasses or purin cups

    40g unsalted butter or margarine

    75g flour

    20g sugar

    1 cup milk

    Chocolate

    2:

①Knead together the unsalted butter, flour and sugar.

②Add the milk in little by little while kneading. Knead until the it has a consistency moister than regular cookie dough.

③Coat one glass with a little oil or butter.

④Affix the dough from step ② around the inside of the glass as shown in the photo below.

✩It’s best to make your dough a little softer than regular cookie dough to prevent cracks from forming.

✩Press the batter firmly to ensure air doesn’t get into it. If you don’t do this then the batter will split.

⑤Place aluminium foil into the centre of the dough to stop it from expanding when baking.

⑥Shape a cup handle and Pompompurin’s ears with leftover dough from step ④.

✩Bake for approximately 10-minutes at 190° with the handle and ears. Remove the handle and ears and bake the cup for a further 5-10 minutes.

3: Melt the chocolate over a bain marie.

4: Remove the aluminium ball and once the cup has cooled remove the cookie and smear in the chocolate.

✩It’s possible to remove the baked cookie smoothly by coating with butter but it will make it break easily so ensure to do it carefully.

The inside of the cookie will look a little uneven after removing the aluminium ball but you won’t be able to see it after adding the chocolate.

Once completely cooled use the leftover chocolate to draw on Pompompurin’s facial features and use it to attach the handle and ears. After attaching the handle and ears hold them in place for a moment for the chocolate to  harden. You can make a hat from the remaining chocolate but I made one from sliced chocolate.

    All done!

In this recipe you’ll learn how to make “Pompompurin rich chocolate mousse”, which is perfect for valentine’s season♡

    1: Ingredients

    Chocolate        50g

    Gelatin               5g

    Fresh cream  180g

Sugar-free cocoa powder    1 table spoon

    Sugar             2 table spoons

    2:

Put all the ingredients into a pot and stir while cold. Heat and melt the chocolate, being careful not to boil it.  Add 1 tablespoon of water to the gelatin until it becomes soft and then add to the mixture and stir until dissolved.

☆Mix well while still cold, otherwise the powder will go lumpy.

    3:

From step 2, filter the mix after the gelatin has dissolved.

    4:

Pour the mixture from step 3 to a vat, let it cool down a bit and then refrigerate until firm.

    5:

Slice a yellow peach to make Purin, by drawing the eyes, nose, and hat with chocolate.

☆Wipe any syrup off from the surface of the yellow peach with kitchen paper, and then draw the parts.

Ears are connected to the face when the syrup dries, however you can also use some pasta to make it stronger.

    6:

Put some cereal, whip cream, yellow peach and chocolate mousse of your choice in a cup, then place Purin on the top and you are done!

Just a little bit of chocolate mousse makes the parfait simply scrumptious! The taste of yellow peach and crunchy cereal makes for a good combination♡
