Special opening at Nijō Castle—a Kyoto World Heritage Site

07.January.2018 | SPOT

A special opening will be held at Nijō Castle, a World Heritage Site in Kyoto, where you will have the opportunity to see the elusive castle gardens.

The Ninomaru gardens of Nijō Castle are a designated Place of Scenic Beauty. They were refurbished under the orders of Kobori Enshū, a sakuji-bugyō (Tokugawa officials responsible for architecture), for the arrival of Emperor Go-Mizunoo’s on his imperial visit in 1626 (3 Kan’ei).

The gardens were built so that they could be appreciated from the Ninomaru Palace hall, the Kuroshoin, and the Honourable Carriage Approach.

The special opening will allow you to view the gardens from the palace halls. You will also be able to enjoy the experience of walking through the spacious palace corridors.

Lunch will also be served in limited quantity from the building in the Seiryu-en Gardens which is normally closed the public.
