Here at MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON, we post news and information about Japan in six languages. Our aim is to deliver a variety of content related to Japan for those who love and enjoy Japanese culture.

 

Right now, people across the globe are in self-isolation as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The same goes for Japan too, so we’ve taken this opportunity to create a new series on the website to show how we’re spending time at home here in Japan. The future is yet uncertain, and we hope for normality to return for all of us soon. We created a new articles series called Stay Home with which we hope to take your mind off the situation, even for just a little bit, to help you feel calmer. It might give you some tips on what you can do while spending time at home.

 

In this edition of Stay Home, we’re taking a look at six more cute, easy-to-make toast recipes that were featured with the trending Japanese hashtag #おうちカフェ (“Cafe at Home”). Try making them yourself at home for breakfast, lunch, or as a snack.

1: Orange Toast | @candyrose914

Candy Rose’s recipe shows us how to make orange toast. Orange and chocolate is a tried and tested combination. The fresh cream adds a dessert-like quality to the toast.

 

Ingredients
・Bread  ・Navel Orange & Chocolate Jam  ・Orange Jam ・Fresh cream ・Orange

 

Method
1: Simmer the orange in white wine and granulated sugar.
2: Toast bread and smear with the jam.
3: Add a dollop of fresh cream on top.
4: Top with sliced orange and tuck in!

 

2: Mini Strawberry & Red Bean Paste Butter Toast | @__yk._

yk.’s toast recipe is a combination of Japanese and western flavours with red bean paste and buttered brioche which looks cute when it’s cut thick and small like in the picture♡

 

Ingredients
・Brioche toast ・Strawberries ・Red bean paste ・Butter ・Fresh cream

 

Method
1: Toast the bread and add the red bean paste.
2: Top with a strawberry and fresh cream.
3: Finish with a knob of butter and enjoy!

 

3: Apple Toast | @ruko_0519

KAORUKO’s toast recipe is a great dessert idea too. It’s a super simple recipe made with microwaved apple compote.

 

Ingredients
・Bread ・Apple ・Lemon juice ・Sugar ・Fruit granola

 

Method
1: Slice apple with the skin on.
2: Add 1 tbsp of lemon juice and 30g sugar to the apple and microwave for 3 minutes.
3: Slice a thin slice of bread and toast. Add the apple compote to the toast and finish with a sprinkle of fruity granola.

 

4: Marshmallow Toast | @woo.rrei

Rei has added marshmallows to their toast to create a fluffy, dessert-like, and cafe-worthy recipe.

 

Ingredients
・Bread ・Marshmallows ・Chocolate Sauce

 

Method
1: Slice a thin piece of bread and toast. Top with marshmallows.
2: Toast once again under a grill until the marshmallows take on colour.
3: Drizzle with chocolate syrup and you’re done!

 

5: Open Avocado Sandwich | @keijunrin

Keiko’s recipe makes a fresh open-style sandwich with lots of avocado. The egg yolk adds a melt-in-the-mouth texture. The texture of the whole thing is nice and smooth.

 

Ingredients
・Bread ・Avocado ・Pink pepper ・Egg yolk ・Mayonnaise

 

Method
1: Add the avocado to a slice of bread and grind on some rose pepper.
2: Drop on an egg yolk and lightly toast under a grill.
3: Drizzle with mayonnaise and enjoy!

 

6: Bread Gratin | @izumxx_37

izumi’s recipe is a combination of bread and “naporitan” which is a Japanese pasta dish. It’s a hearty serving that makes for a great lunch.

 

Ingredients
・Bread ・Naporitan pasta ・White Sauce ・Cheese

 

Method
1: Make naporitan and white sauce in advance. Cut the naporitan into small pieces.
2: Slice 1 thin and 1 thick slice of bread.
3: Cut out the inside of the thick slice. Place this hollowed-out thick piece on top of the thin slice of bread. This thin slice forms the bottom of your bread.
4: Add the naporitan inside. Drizzle in white sauce so it’s like a lid over the pasta.
5: Sprinkle on cheese, toast, and you’re done!

    Shepherd’s pie is a classic British meal and makes an appearance in the movie when Earwig eats it at St. Morwald’s Home for Children. It’s her favourite meal: mash sat on top of a tomato sauce-loaded mince, carrots, green beans, onion, and paprika combo.

     

     

    Boy Scout Fried Toast

    Fried toast is another common food on the British breakfast menu. The recipe takes thickly-sliced bread and fries it in the juices of bacon and sausage. It’s based on the scene where Earwig messes up making her fried toast. The recipe is made Frech-style with egg, milk, sugar, and butter.

  • Kaori’s Easy Recipe: Learn to Make Baymax Mushi-Pan Steamed Bread

    With just a small bit of ingenuity, turn everyday food into something cute using Kaori’s Easy Recipe! With a few simple ideas, an ordinary recipe magically transforms into a cute dish.

     

    Today, I’ll teach you how to make Baymax mushi-pan steamed bread.

     

    Ingredients

    This recipe makes 5 portions

    140g strong flour

    20g granulated sugar

    Pinch of salt

    3g dry yeast

    3g baking powder

    5g vegetable oil

    85ml-90ml milk (room temperature)

    Mix everything together in a food processor. If you don’t have a food processor, you can also knead the ingredients well by hand.

    Ferment at 40℃ for 40 minutes. If you don’t have a fermentation machine, leave in a warm environment.

    Once the dough has doubled in size, divide into five portions and put into separate cups. If using paper cups, rub a little bit of oil inside.

    Bake in the oven at 40℃ for 20-25 minutes.

    After baking, steam in a steamer for 12-13 minutes. If you don’t have a steamer, put into a frying pan or large pot with a little bit of water and cover.

     

    6

    Once cooled, use some nori seaweed to make Baymax’s face and you’re done!

  • Japanese Unisex Loungewear Brand Arce Opens Online Store

    Wanget’s unisex loungewear brand Arce launched its online shop on Wednesday (February 17). The brand is hosting a campaign on its social media pages to promote the launch where customers can win some free items.

    Arce was established from Makuake on November 25, 2020. The brand creates clothes made in Japan using environmentally-friendly Japanese materials. Their loungewear is versatile and can be worn not only indoors but outdoors too, and even when going to meet people. The clothes are shipped in boxes made from FSC-certified cardboard, and the vinyl bags used to protect each item are made using biodegradable saccharum officinarum.

     

    Arce held its first exhibition in Japan on November 25 and 26 last year to resounding success, bringing in many customers.

    The brand is currently holding a campaign on its Instagram page from February 17 to 28 where people can enter for a chance to win the above-pictured T-shirt and pullover. Only one of each will be given to two people respectively. To enter, you need to follow Arce on Instagram and give a like on which item you want.

  • Kaori’s Easy Valentine’s Recipe: Learn to Make Rilakkuma Hot Chocolate Sticks

    Today, I’ll be showing you a simple recipe for Valentine’s Day made with ingredients bought entirely from the 100 yen store Seria. I call it the “Rilakkuma Hot Chocolate Stick.”

     

    Ingredients

    Square mould from Seria (makes six sticks)
    1 bag of milk chocolates

    1 bag of white chocolates

    1 bag of dark chocolates

    Toppings of your choice (I used caramel chocolate chips and walnuts)

    Melt all the chocolates separately over a bain-marie.

    Create layers with each chocolate type. Pick your first choice and pour into the mould and wait for it to set lightly before adding the next chocolate. For this recipe, I went ahead and added the chocolate a little before layers had finished setting to create a marbling effect.

     

    ✩I also added some strawberry chocolate I had left over from my Rilakkuma chocolates.

    Once all your chocolate is in the mould, stick in some lollipops and add toppings of your choice making sure they don’t overflow. This will ensure they set together with the chocolate.

    Allow to set overnight and your chocolate stick is ready.

    I made Rilakkuma chocolates from scratch and added those to the sticks to finish.

  • Kaori’s Easy Recipe: Learn to Make Banana and Black Tea Muffins

    With just a small bit of ingenuity, turn everyday food into something cute using Kaori’s Easy Recipe! With a few simple ideas, an ordinary recipe magically transforms into a cute dish.

     

    Today, I’ll be showing you a super simple dessert made using hotcake mix. I decorated the muffins with strawberries and a dusting of icing sugar to give them that Christmas feel.

     

    Ingredients
    1 bag of hotcake mix (150g)
    1 large egg
    20g sugar
    25ml vegetable oil
    30ml milk
    2 ripe bananas
    1 tbsp black tea leaves
    *If you don’t have loose black tea leaves you can use the leaves from inside of a black tea bag

    Slice half of one banana for topping later. Mash the remaining one and a half in a bowl with a fork or potato masher.

    In a different bowl, add all of the ingredients and mix together. Once mixed, add the mashed banana and mix again to combine.

    Add the mix to muffin tins. The muffins will rise quite a bit so you may want to use less mix. Finish by adding the sliced bananas from Step 1 on top.

    Bake at 180℃ on the middle shelf for 25 minutes.

    Complete your muffins by dusting with icing sugar, fresh cream, and strawberries. I added a chocolate Hello Kitty on mine!

  • J-Pop Group Perfume to Make and Eat Recipes Submitted by Fans at P.O.P Festival

    Japanese food tech company Cookpad Inc. is set to co-host the “P.O.P” Fes Food Court at Japanese pop group Perfume’s upcoming Perfume Online Present (“P.O.P”) Festival which will be held on September 21, 2020. Cookpad has also opened applications for fans to submit the recipes that they want Perfume to eat at the festival

     

    “P.O.P” Festival Breakdown

    With concerts and music festivals forced to be cancelled or postponed as a result of COVID-19, Perfume too had to cancel their Japan dome tour. September 21, 2020 marks the 15th anniversary since Perfume made their major debut, and the 20th anniversary since they formed. Since their tour was cancelled, they still wanted to celebrate in some way, which is how the “P.O.P” Festival was conceived. The online event will feature both free and paid content with a full timetable for the day.

     

    “P.O.P” Fes Food Court

    Food is an indispensable part of music festivals, so the event will have its own interactive “P.O.P” Fes Food Court which encourages fans to submit the recipes that they want Perfume to eat. The chosen recipe will be displayed on the food court page of the event’s website and Perfume will actually make and eat it in a video. Fans can prepare their own food at the same time so they can sit down and eat with Perfume. Details on submitting can be found on the official website in Japanese.

    Today’s recipe will show you how to make a simple ice cream made with frozen strawberries and a blender.

     

    Ingredients


    500g frozen strawberries (either store bought or self-frozen)

    120ml condensed milk

    Sliced white chocolate to make Hello Kitty

     

    1.


    Defrost around 3/10 of the frozen strawberries until they are more soft than frozen, allowing them to be blended more easily.

     

    2.


    Throw the defrosted strawberries into a blender along with the condensed milk and blend.

     

    3.


    Place the blended mix into a ziplock bag and place into the freezer. After about an hour, massage the mix while it’s still inside the bag. Repeat this whole process 2-3 times. Doing this will make the ice cream tastier.

    Once fully set, place into a serving cup of your choice, use sliced white chocolate to make your chocolate Hello Kitty, and serve!

  • Make Your Own Mister Donut Treats at Home With These Simple Recipes

    Mister Donut Japan is releasing recipes over on its official website on August 7 which will show you how to make three of their popular doughnuts. The simple recipes are twists on the “Honey Dip,” “Old Fashioned,” and “Pon de Ring” doughnuts.

     

    The doughnuts can be whipped up for breakfast, as a daytime snack or an evening treat, so customers can enjoy the taste of Mister Donut from the comfort of their own home.

    The “Morning Ring Toast” recipe is the perfect wake-up treat made with honey dip, eggs, and ham, all of which complement each other deliciously.

    “Old Fashioned Parfait” combines the irresistible crunchiness of the Old Fashioned doughnut with ice cream to create a real summertime dessert.

    Finally, “Pon de Agedashi” is an indulgence for after dinner, bringing together Pon de Ring doughnuts with grated daikon radish. It’s a great snack to have with an evening drink.

     

    Mister Donut Japan will release the recipe as well as a how-to-make video over on their official website this Friday, so be sure to try making your own at home.

  • Universal Studios Japan to Release Snoopy, Elmo and Other Cute Character Face Masks

    In an effort to ensure the safety and protect the health of guests and staff, Universal Studios Japan (USJ) introduced strict measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on June 8, 2020, such as limiting the number of people who could enter the park each day and enforcing thorough cleaning routines. This enabled the park to reopen after its temporary closure. It has since been able to deliver its scope of fun and excitement to guests, albeit in a more structured way.

    USJ wants to make wearing masks more fun too, and so it is releasing a range of character-inspired face masks, such as Snoopy, Elmo and the Cookie Monster, on August 7. Part of the money made from sales of these masks will be donated to the USJ Wonder Kids Program which helps support children in need.

    The masks’ unique designs take the mouths of each character. These can be worn together with each respective characters’ headband which are also sold at USJ. Designs include Elmo, Cookie Monster, Snoopy, Tim, Jurassic Park, and Jaws.

  • Chawanmushi Recipe: Savoury Dessert Made With Carrots, Cream Cheese & Mirin

    Together with soy sauce and miso, mirin is a fundamental condiment in the Japanese kitchen and for many recipes for Japanese food. It’s a sweet rice wine that has lower alcohol content and higher sugar content when compared to sake, adding a sweet flavour to dishes.

     

    Today, we’re taking a look at a recipe that uses “Mikawa Mirin,” a brand of mirin made from high quality rice, to make carrot and cream cheese chawanmushi. Chawanmushi is a savoury egg custard dessert eaten in Japan.

     

    Carrot & Cream Cheese Chawanmushi

    Chawanmushi is made using mirin and has a smooth texture to it as well as a subtly sweet flavour. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a hot summer’s day.

     

    Ingredients (Serves 1)


    ●Chawanmushi
    60g carrots
    240ml dashi
    20ml soy sauce
    120ml Mikawa Mirin
    8g sugar
    18g cream cheese
    1 egg

     

    ●Okra-an
    Okra
    30ml dashi
    0.5g salt
    3ml Mikawa Mirin

     

    Method

    We will start by making the chawanmushi.

    1. Slice the carrots and boil them until they become soft.

    2. Add the soy sauce, sugar, and lots of mirin and cook through the dashi.

    3. Cook for approximately 20 minutes on a medium heat, then cool with ice. Add the cooled carrots, cream cheese, and 20ml of the dashi into a blender and bend.

    4. Add the egg to the mix and steam the mix for 12 minutes on a medium heat.

     

    While the chawanmushi is cooling, we’ll make the okra-an.

    5. Mix together the okra-an dashi, mirin, and salt together. Add watered potato starch and thinly sliced okra. Leave to cool in the refrigerator.

    6. Add the okra-an to the cooled chawanmushi and tuck into your cute two-layered dessert.

    Carrot & Cream Cheese Chawanmushi

    The dessert is an enjoyable mix of the sticky texture from the okra-an and smooth chawanmushi. It’s great to have not only at lunch or dinner, but at home parties with friends too.

     

    –How’s the taste?


    Misa Kimura: “It works really well with the mirin. The chawanmushi is like a sweet treat. It’s super easy to make too, so I think I’ll be making it at home!”

     

    Mirin is indispensable to any Japanese cupboard and can be used in many ways, whether it be a classic Japanese dish or a dessert like this one.

  • Japan’s Manga Artists Join Hands For New Manga Project Depicting Life During COVID-19

    Over 50 manga artists in Japan are coming together for the launch of the new “MANGA Day to Day” project which will depict daily life during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

    The project is set to roll out for free in mid-June on Twitter and Comic Days. A teaser by famous manga artist Tetsuya Chiba (Ashita no Joe; Notari Matsutarō) was released on May 22, 2020.

     

    A related project entitled “Day to Day” is also taking place over on the Japanese literature news website TREE where over 50 popular authors have penned writings and essays on the restrictions of today’s everyday life. In addition to Japan, both projects have caught the attention of overseas news media and websites too. Like the related “Day to Day” project, “MANGA Day to Day” will have one new manga strip released for free each day on Twitter and Comic Days. A piece entitled Akudama by Tetsuya Chiba is already available to see over on the project’s official Twitter account.

     

    People’s lives have changed drastically as a result of the pandemic. To pass down this time in history to the next 100, or even 200 years, the pieces contributed to the “MANGA Day to Day” project will be compiled into a book that’s scheduled for release in early 2021. A special edition of the book will also be compiled featuring both the manga and writing pieces.

  • BAPE® Releases Face Mask Case For Storing Your Mask

    A BATHING APE® released its new face mask case on Saturday (May 23) for people to hygienically put away their face masks, whether to store away or for on the go. The cases will be given to everyone that purchases something from the BAPE STORE® or BAPE.COM in Japan.

    The case features BAPE’s iconic APE HEAD design. It’s made from PVC and so can be hand washed so people can safely and hygienically store their face masks. The case can of course be used to store hand sanitiser or hand wipes too.
