My Melody Themed Hotel Room Opens at Keio Plaza Hotel Tama

26.June.2019 | FEATURES / SPOT

Two new guest rooms opened at Keio Plaza Hotel Tama on June 15 themed on the Sanrio characters My Melody and the Little Twin Stars (Kiki & Lala).

This year’s Sanrio Character Awards were held earlier this month. Both My Melody and the Little Twin Stars proved their popularity with fans as they came in 4th and 6th place respectively. With that in mind, what does Keio Plaza Hotel Tama have in store for fans of the characters in their new guest rooms? I’m here to let you in on the full scoop today.

Keio Plaza Hotel is about a 30-minute train ride from Shinjuku and a 3-minute walk from Keio-Tama-Center Station. It’s also close to the city of Chofu where the Rugby World Cup will be held this fall as well as located in West Tokyo, an area enjoyed by foreign tourists.

There are two of each rooms available and they will be permanent rooms at the hotel. The hotel already has four Hello Kitty Rooms which were introduced in November 2014 and renovated with the opening of the new My Melody and Little Twin Stars Rooms, making for a total of eight Sanrio character rooms at the hotel. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the My Melody Room.

  • Sanrio Character Awards 2019 | Event Report

    06.June.2019 | FEATURES / SPOT

Hi, everyone. Midori here from MMN’s editorial department.

The Sanrio Character Awards is a hugely popular event held in Japan every year. The winners were just recently announced, and I got to attend the announcement event.

This year marks the 34th run of the awards which have become an annual custom amongst Sanrio fans. People waited with a slight nervous anticipation at Puroland where the event was held as they awaited for the award ceremony to begin.

The ceremony began with an initial greeting by Kabuki Nyantarou before the participating characters of the awards were presented on screen. There were over 80 entries this year!

They took no time at all in listing the winners in order from the top. Cinnamoroll has reigned champion for two years in a row, but taking the crown this year is Hello Kitty who is celebrating her 45th anniversary. After her were Cinnamoroll and then Pompompurin. Hello Kitty is the poster girl for Sanrio but the last time she earned the No. 1 spot was six years ago in 2013, and last year she was in 4th place.

Hello Kitty is the only character since 2000 to win three years in a row. The highest streak by the other characters is just two years. When the votes began rolling in this year Cinamoroll was initially at the top with Hello Kitty in 2nd place, but halfway through they swapped places. Of course, we mustn’t forget Pompompurin and YOSHIKITTY either who followed close behind them.

Firstly, let’s take a look at who received the Special Awards.

Cogimyun―Sanrio’s flour dough fairy character―obtained a much higher ranking than last year, earning her the Hop Step Jump Award. Fans were fascinated with this announcement as Cogimyun is said to the most elusive of the Sanrio characters.

Hello Mandy reigned in the Collaborations Category, a collaboration between Hello Kitty and Mandy Sekiguchi from Japanese boy band GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE. Sekiguchi himself surprised the crowd as he was present to receive the award alongside Hello Mandy.

Taking home the TikTok Award this year is Marumofubiyori Moppu. Moppu is a cute white bear who likes to lounge around at home wrapped in his favourite blanket. His sleepy videos were a hit on the Japanese TikTok.

    Now, for the main announcements.

Ranks 20 through 10 were announced via large cardboard panels.

The top 10 were then announced in order, from 10 down to 1. Each of these popular characters were announced until just 2nd and 1st place were left to be announced. The remaining two names were Cinnamoroll and Hello Kitty, leaving fans anxious to hear who the winner of 2019 will be.

    And the winner is…

Hello Kitty, with 1,647,073 votes! Not only does she take home the top award, it’s also her 45th anniversary and the first win of Japan’s Reiwa era. Cinnamoroll came in a close second at 1,584,057 votes. I saw some fans with tears in their eyes as a result of this heated battle.

At the end, the characters lined up in a big row and celebrated their rank by holding up a card.

To celebrate her win, it was announced that Hello Kitty will hit up Sanrio stores across Japan to show her gratitude. Exclusive merchandise will also be available for purchase to thank fans for their support. Full details can be found on Sanrio’s official website.

The Awards were also held in several overseas countries with the outcomes being much different. In Taiwan Cinnamoroll was 1st place, Pompompurin 2nd place and Hello Kitty 3rd place. In China, it was Cinnamoroll in 1st place, My Melody in 2nd place, and YOSHIKITTY in 3rd place, a collaboration between X Japan member Yoshiki. And in Hong Kong it was Pekkle in 1st place, Pompompurin in 2nd place and Cinnamoroll in 3rd place.

This year’s award ceremony for the internationally beloved Sanrio characters comes to an end. Congratulations, Hello Kitty!

  • We Interviewed The Creators Behind Sanrio’s Popular Enjoy Idol Series

    20.January.2020 | FASHION / FEATURES

Uchiwa Fan Case (10 Varieties): ¥880 (After Tax)

A cute case to protect your precious uchiwa fan from damage. You can even stick it on your wall!

Concert Confetti Storage Keyring (10 Varieties): ¥550 Each (After Tax)

Want to keep living the memory of confetti bursting out from the sky at that concert? Store one in this keyring!

Idol uchiwa fans. If you’re in Japan, you’ll have definitely seen these around – a round fan bearing a large picture of an artist or idol in the centre. From cute Sanrio-themed items to decorate your idol concert merchandise to even a keyring that preserves concert confetti, Sanrio’s Enjoy Idol Series is full of must-have items for concert-going idol fans. However, there seems to be no other secondary use of these items that cater to the non-concert-goer. What a niche market.

Fan Memory Notebook: ¥550 Each (After Tax)

This is an easy way to keep your notes on activities you do to support your idols.

Just how much do idol fans love these items? After conducting research among friends with over 10-years of experience as an obsessive idol fan, it seems that these are more popular than one may think. A quick visit to Sanrio’s official website revealed that the series is so popular that many items sell out quickly.

Despite trying to reach out to what might seem a small, niche market, these items seem to be in high demand among idol fans. Just what kind of person came up with such an idea? Curious to find out, we met up with the Enjoy Idol Series project planners for an interview.

Q1: It’s a pleasure to have this interview. We at MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON love Sanrio so much that it’s not often we go long without releasing some kind of news about you. One of the most fascinating Sanrio merchandise series has to be the Enjoy Idol Series for its high demand in such a niche area. Our first question is: From what idea or initial thought was this series born?

Project Planner: The Enjoy Idol Series is managed by me and one other person. Both of us are avid idol fans. We noticed not only lots of fans at concerts using Sanrio merchandise, but also many idol fans on social media using Sanrio characters as profile pictures and as stickers on their photos online. For quite a few years now there’s been a connection forming between idol fans and Sanrio characters in several ways.

We also noticed that although merchandise aimed at idol fans is steadily increasing, there still wasn’t anything cute for them out there. That’s why we started designing this series. The other project leader and I often go to concerts and watch DVDs together. That’s when the ideas started flowing. Eventually, we were packing our project full of ideas and it was really fun. We thought of how we could combine Sanrio characters and idol fans to create something incredibly cute

Q2: It’s wonderful to hear that you are both idol fans yourselves. When you first had these initial ideas running through your head, were you confident that your series would become popular among other idol fans?

Planner: We were very excited to have created this cute Enjoy Idol series and we were certain that other fans would feel the same. And the reaction to it exceeded my expectations. Even people who don’t usually go to Sanrio shops buy something from the series because of their love of Sanrio which made us really happy to see.

Q3: Having seen all the sold out products on your website, it’s clear that many people appreciate what you’ve done. How does it feel to see idol fans using merchandise that you designed?

Project Planner: We’re just so grateful to see people using items from the Enjoy Idol Series to make the most of their concert experience. A lot of people buying products from the series buy specific items based on strongly associating their idol with a certain Sanrio character. We’ve now learned the reasons behind the choices fans make when purchasing from the series which has been a real eye-opener.

Silver Decoration Case (7 Varieties): ¥660 (After Tax)

A box to save your concert confetti

Q4: After some research among a number of friends who are idol fans, it seems that your series is a big hit. Many are excited to see what you are going to knock up next. Do you have any new ideas you’re warming up to?

Project Planner: I cannot reveal any specific details just yet. We are still in the process of creating our next items. You can expect them to maintain Sanrio’s cute style. As an idol fan myself, I am committed to making sure these items are of high functionality for our users.

Q5: I’m sure that many people will be over the moon to hear that you are developing yet more cute items. Do you have any final words you would like to say to idol fans and Sanrio fans?

Project Planner: I would like to thank you all for your continuous support for the Enjoy Idol Series. We are delighted to improve your lifestyle and we hope that these items help you make the most of your experience as an idol fan.

When you have something to adore, you lead a fulfilling life. I’ve heard the stories of friends who are idol fans and can feel their excitement towards the release of our new products. I’m so happy to think that these products are improving the quality of life for many idol fans.

Diary Stickers (7 Varieties): ¥275 (After Tax)

These stickers are full of words perfect for idol fans but of no use to those who are not idol fans!

Just seeing some of the specific words and phrases written on the idol stickers shows just how much the project planners understand and feel close to other idol fans. It is enough to warm your heart.

The two project planners put their love of idol fans at the centre of their design proposal, creating a merchandise series just for them. Each item connects idol fans through their mutual love. This eye-opening interview showed the true strength of shared passion when catering to a niche market.

Despite not being an idol fan themselves, our interviewer could feel the love poured into each item in the series. What item will be released next? We’ll be just as excited as the idol fans are, waiting eagerly for its release.

    20.January.2020 | SPOT

Online travel booking website Rakuten Travel has released this year’s list for the most popular hotels and accommodations you can stay at with pets in Japan. The list is based off travellers’ reviews taken from the website. This list has been updated and published every year since 2014, making this its 6th run.

Placing number one on the list for the first time is Yutsura, a ryokan Japanese-style inn which opened in Shizuoka in April 2018 and can be rented by one person or group for one night. Up to six people in a single group can stay there along with up to 5 small dogs weighing 5kg or less. It’s highly favoured amongst travellers who want to take their dogs on the road due to the extent the inn caters for pets. Guests can enjoy having the dogs in their rooms as well as feed their pets there, all without being a bother to other guests.

Nipponia Sawara Merchant Town Hotel in Chiba Prefecture came in second place. You can feel the history of this hotel accommodation which is renovated from a traditional storehouse and townhouse. It allows up to three pets in a room which collectively weigh 25kg. There are three types of rooms to choose from, including one with a dog park. It also offers various services, including a free night for one dog, snacks and amenities for dogs, and more.

In third place is Dog Pension R65 in Shizuoka Prefecture which allows not only big and small dogs, but cats and other pets too. • Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll & Pompompurin Japanese Wagashi Confections Releasing at Lawson Convenience Stores.

    17.January.2020 | FOOD

Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll and Pompompurin are the latest to be picked up by character-inspired Japanese confectionery series Tabemas. These wagashi sweets will go on sale at Lawson convenience stores across Japan (excluding Lawson Store 100 branches) on January 21, 2020.

The character line-up is based on the top three winners of the 2019 Sanrio Character Awards which we covered last summer. Hello Kitty came first place at the awards, and so she has gotten a special limited edition design for the sweets series. Cinnamoroll was second on the award list, and this is his first time joining Tabemas. Third place was Pompompurin who appears once again with Tabemas due to his popularity.

The ‘Tabemas’ brand name is an abbreviation of the Japanese words taberareru masukotto, meaning ‘mascots that you can eat.’ It is a Japanese confectionery series that combines well-known characters and Japanese sweets made from ingredients like red bean paste, sugar and rice flour. The sweets are also made with a dough called “nerikiri” which is used in making traditional Japanese wagashi sweets.

In line with the Year of the Rat in the Chinese zodiac, Hello Kitty is donning a kawaii rat outfit. Cinnamoroll’s charm point is his big ears and pink cheeks.

Each confection is filled with a different flavour bean paste: Hello Kitty is cheese, Cinamoroll is milk, and Pompompurin is of course Japanese custard pudding, or ‘purin,’ flavoured. They maintain that delicate flavour of traditional Japanese wagashi while having cute contemporary designs. You’ll be happy to know that all of the colouring is natural tooーno synthetic colours were added.

Perfect as a delicious treat, but don’t forget to snap a photo for Instagram first! Each of them is also limited in stock, so don’t miss your chance to grab one at the nearest Lawson store to you while in Japan.

  • Kaori’s Easy Recipe: Learn to Make My Melody Strawberry Purin

    12.January.2020 | FEATURES / FOOD

With just a small bit of ingenuity, turn everyday food into something cute using Kaori’s easy recipe! With a few simple ideas, an ordinary recipe magically transforms into a cute dish.

As strawberries are currently in season in Japan, today we’ll be looking at an easy recipe for delicious strawberry purin. All you have to do is mix the ingredients and you’re done! In previous recipes, we’ve looked at purin recipes that involve decorating the inside of the glass. Many people commented that this is quite difficult so today we’ve got a recipe that is easy enough for even kids.

    Ingredients (For 2 Portions)

Two small jars (this recipe uses Weck jars)

200g Strawberries with stems and leaves removed (approximately one small pack)

    20g Sugar

20ml Fresh Cream (or milk to substitute)

5g Gelatin (dissolved in a tablespoon of water)

    ½ Teaspoon Lemon Juice

    To Decorate

Premade Chocolate Decorations or Chocolate Slices (as you like)

Strawberries to Decorate (as you like)

    Fresh Cream (As you Like)

    Chocolate Pen

2: After removing the leaves and stems from the strawberries, blend them in a mixer.

3: Heat the mixture in a microwave on 600w for 50 seconds. Afterwards, add the sugar, gelatin solution and lemon juice in that order. Finally, mix in the fresh cream.

4: Meanwhile, press the premade chocolate decorations or sliced chocolate (white) into the inside wall of your jar.

5: Use the chocolate pen to draw the face, strawberries and ribbons from the outside of the glass. If you make a mistake, wipe it off using kitchen paper and try again.

6:Put the jar into the fridge for the chocolate to harden. Once the chocolate does not sink when the jar is placed upright, slowly add your strawberry mixture into the jar and put it back in the fridge until hard. After your dessert solidifies, you can add the finishing touches of whipped cream and strawberries.

    And you’re done!

  • Hyakudan Hinamatsuri 2020: Hotel Gajoen Tokyo Announces Hina Doll Festival at 100 Step Staircase

    30.December.2019 | SPOT

Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, a historical museum and hotel in Japan, has announced that it will host the Hyakudan Hinamatsuri 2020 doll festival from January 24 to March 15 next year. It will take place at the hotel’s Hyakudan Kaidan, or ‘100 Steps Staircase’―which was registered by Tokyo Prefecture as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2009 for its exceptional architecture and artistic beauty.

Hinamatsuri is an annual festival in Japan celebrated on March 3 every year where ornamental dolls are displayed. Hotel Gajoen Tokyo boasts the biggest Hinamatsuri festival in Tokyo, with over 600,000 visitors having attended across the 10 years it has been held.

A First For The Festival: Photography Permitted

Up to now, photography at the hotel’s Hinamatsuri has been restricted to protect the displays. However, for the first time ever, next year’s event will allow photography in all of the rooms, which will house dolls symbolising each period of Japanese period: Edo, Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei, and the current Reiwa, not to mention the 500+ zashikibina dolls. There will also be hanging decorations with rabbit designs in the elevator hall created by Nippon Tsurushibina Kyoukai, a non-profit organisation. Also for the first time this year, visitors will be able to dress up in a beautiful uchikake wedding coat and take a photo at the designated photo spot. This is so they can further fill a part of the hina doll world.

Tottori, Shimane & Yamaguchi Get Involved For The First Time

Visitors will be able to enjoy dolls in a variety of ways from different places across  Japan, including a giant 2-meter long wall decoration and old hina dolls handed down from families past from the city of Yonago in Tottori, tiny tsuchi dolls from Hokuei in Tottori which can fit in the pal of your hand, renbei dolls, and more. The spectacular collection will have visitors feeling like they are inside a hina doll palace.

The Hina Doll of the Ishitani Residence (Chizu, Tottori)

The town of Chizu is located in the southeast portion of Tottori Prefecture and is surrounded by mountains. It flourished during the Edo period as a post town and place of rest for the Tottori Domain as part of sankin-kōtai, a policy which had feudal lords alternate living for a year in their domain, as it headed towards Edo. The Ishitani Residence, which is built facing the Inaba Kaidō―a type of route built during the Edo period for transportation―has almost 40 rooms and spans 4,000 square meters. It is listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan for its modern Japanese-style architecture. The enormous mansion, which is home to a doma dirt floor supported by great beams as well as a Japanese-style garden which can be seen from all the tatami rooms, is decorated with ancient handed-down hina dolls when early spring settles in. This includes dolls from the Meiji periodo with vibrantly embroidered outfits, gorgeous decorations for the hina doll steps, special hina bowls used when celebrating Hinamatsuri at the Ishitani Residence, and more.

Hyakudan Hinamatsuri Memorial: Display Of Over 500 Zashikibina Hina Dolls (Iizuka, Fukuoka)

Iizuka in Fukuoka formerly thrived for its coal mines and bustled as a business dealing in coal. The Former Den’emon Ito Residence spans 2,300 square meters and speaks volumes of the cultural significance of the city’s ties to coal as it belonged to Den’emon Ito who was known as the “King of Coal Mining.” Every year during the Hinamatsuri season, the Itsuzuka Hina no Matsuri festival is held at the residence where hina dolls from 16 areas throughout the town are displayed. The Former Den’emon Ito Residence is the main venue for Itsuzuka Hina no Matsuri, which sees a huge number of zashikibina hina dolls put out. The Residence has been involved with Hyakudan Hinamatsuri twice in the past, and this time, their overwhelming showcasing of 500+ dolls, which has garnered popularity every time, will be put on as a special display. The display will keep with the festival’s theme of tales of Izumo as well as the myth of the Hare of Inaba.

    Hina no Shitsurai: Table Laying

Another special display will also be put on for the festival with the theme “Hina no Shitsurai,” meaning “setting up a hina living space.” There will be gorgeous table laying by Tomiko Ishibashi, who is an interior decorator working internationally, as well as displays of hina decorations in home living rooms and genkan. Select parts of this exhibition will be available to purchase in the museum shop, so people can take away a memory and try setting up their own hina decorations. And for the first time ever, the festival is opening the Hina Cafe for a limited time between January 24 to February 14 where visitors can sip on Japanese tea and eat Japanese snacks. Hina decorations will serve as the theme for the cafe.

Discover the beauty of the Hinamatsuri, a festival unique to Japan, at the 11th Hyakudan Hinamatsuri.
