At the 1st Round, spice fans had their fill of Ciao em Cafe’s Bún bò Huế. This café, which originates from the outskirts of Tokyo in Hana-Koganei, took part in the event for the first time. One of their signature dishes is the Vietnamese soup, which captured the hearts of many women for its perfectly balanced sweet yet spicy flavour. Despite being Menya Mazeharu’s first time serving at the event, their queues stretched out into the sunset from morning to evening each day .
Round 2 will see Cheese to Gibier Curry Naru Ichizoku and Tokyo spice curry Aka to Kuro spicing up the event for the first time. This is the perfect opportunity to experience Awajishima Curry made with the world’s most sense-scorching spices including ghost pepper, trinidad scorpion pepper, and the carolina reaper. Tokyo spice curry serves up red curry dishes made with ingredients traditionally used in natural Chinese food therapy. Their black curries are Kashmiri curries that will leave you feeling satisfied.

Seafood Heaven at Shizuoka’s New Restaurant Atami Ginza Osakana Shokudo
Atami Ginza Shopping District in Shizuoka’s seaside city of Atami is enjoying a new boom of bustling customers this year, and they’re sure to continue pouring in with the opening of its new seafood entertainment restaurant Atami Ginza Osakana Shokudo. The eatery opened its grand doors on August 8, offering fresh, flavourful seafood dishes. In the evenings, the restaurant turns into Osakana Sakaba where they serve gorgeous sake.
Atami is home to many fishing harbours, including those in Ajiro, Izuyama, and Hatsushima. Atami’s waters are a treasure trove of sea life, offering a bounty of seafood such as mackerel, salmon, shrimp, Splendid alfonsino, shellfish, and more.
The restaurant uses a previously vacant building which has been renovated for the opening. Their menu concept is “Atami nostalgia” which will fuse together traditional Atami food with new spins. Food is prepared in an open kitchen in a variety of ways including sashimi, grilled, steamed, and so on.
Splendid Alfonsino Rice Bowl – ¥2,780 (Before Tax)
The absolute must-try on their menu is their Splendid alfonsino rice bowl. It’s topped generously with huge cuts of horse mackerel, mackerel, and Splendid alfonsino, all caught fresh from neighbouring harbours.
The restaurant also serves the ginormous Japanese spider crab which is a local speciality in the city of Izu. They are kept fresh in tanks in the restaurant. In the evening, when the restaurant turns into a bar, you can have this crab served however you like: as sashimi, grilled, or even steamed. As well as fresh seafood, they also serve vegetables and other meat, all sourced locally. Tofu, desserts and other food is too.
Japan is known for its exquisite seafood. If you’re travelling to Shizuoka this summer, be sure you pay a visit to the new Atami Ginza Osakana Shokudo.

SHIRO’s Omotesando Cosmetic and Beauty Store Gets Museum-Like Makeover
The flagship store of cosmetic brand SHIRO, SHIRO Omotesando, received a makeover on Friday last week (December 18). The shop, which has moved to the building’s second floor, has increased in size by 30%, allowing for SHIRO to display its 70 or so skincare and cosmetic products like a museum.
The many ingredients used in SHIRO’s products are now on display—something which customers don’t normally get to see―such as extract of gagome kombu, tamanu, pot marigold, and more. The line-up is packed solely with high quality ingredients by trusted producers and is a chance for people to get to know about the products they are buying even more.
The Edible Display
A special display of edibles, which will change depending on the harvesting seasons, can be enjoyed including ginger, yuzu, aloe, and more.
Underneath the displayed ingredients are eight drawers which reveal the actual size of the ingredients before they are turned into products. It also reveals when they are produced, information about the producers, and so on.
The store has of course undergone a full revamp, with the walls layered with gravel and soil, further adding to the display of the raw materials and ingredients. The wall design incorporates a traditional Japanese architecture method which results in it looking like something straight out of nature.
Limited Edition Products
To celebrate the renovations at SHIRO Omotesando, the store will be selling a limited-edition SHIRO PERFUME as well as a selection of products available at only select stores like SHIRO LIFE and SHIRO HOME items.
SHIRO BEAUTY (B1F)
SHIRO BEAUTY is a salon on floor B1F that manages SHIRO Omotesando. It’s set to close on December 31 and will reopen in mid-February next year to bring in haircut, hair colouring, head spa, and other services as well as facials, body treatments, and more.
