Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s First Performance of ‘Maybe Baby’ Takes Place on First Day of New Tour

19.January.2022 | MUSIC

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of her major label debut, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is back in the news. The artist will perform at this year’s Coachella, one of the largest music festivals in the United States, and released her first full-length album in three years ‘Candy Racer’ in October 2021. On January 16, Kyary embarked on the largest tour of her career, ‘Kyary Pamyu Pamyu 10th ANNIVERSARY JAPAN TOUR 2022 CANDY WAVE,’ which will see the singer performing 30 shows across Japan.

The first show was held at Atsugi City Cultural Hall in accordance with all local guidelines to limit the spread of the Coronavirus. Fans lined up, excited to see the artist for the first time in three years–and when Kyary took the stage clad in a bright green wig and costume, she showed her appreciation for those who have waited to see her again.

“Long time no see! I’m sorry I made you wait,” the singer said as the audience replied with massive applause. “Today, I’m starting my first tour in three years. I want to give you all a performance that will make you glad you came!”

The artist began by performing her newest track Maybe Baby for the first time. The setlist included 21 songs total including songs from Kyary’s newest album ‘Candy Racer’ and legendary tracks like PONPONPON and Fashion Monster

In conjunction with the nationwide tour, the “LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project” was launched to energize Japan through the appeal of regional towns and cities. The 30 stops on the new tour include many that Kyary has not visited before, and were chosen based on the singer’s desire to perform for fans who may not typically be able to attend one of her shows. Wanting to show her gratitude, this is also a chance to inspire local industry and tourism, both of which have been hit hard by the ongoing pandemic.

Keep an eye out for what Kyary Pamyu Pamyu does next!

  • [LIVE REPORT] Atarashii Gakko! Performs at Zepp DiverCity

    24.May.2022 | MUSIC

On May 20, the indescribably unique four-member dance and vocal group Atarashii Gakko! performed Zepp DiverCity in Tokyo! Given their performance at such a well-known venue, the name of their solo concert was fittingly ‘Wha–?! Graduating from Obscurity ~AG! FRIDAY AFTER SCHOOL~.’

The group signed with American multi-media company 88rising in January 2021. The label is attempting to introduce more unique Asian music to the US, and it doesn’t get much more unique than Atarashii Gakko! The girls have over 3.8 million TikTok followers, and their April single WOO! GO! was released as a tie-in with NIKE Juku, amassing praise from audiences worldwide.

As fans of the band have come to expect, the concert began with the sound of chimes, leading into the first song, Toumei Boy. Followed by an intense dance performance, fans were captivated by the show, which was performed overseas last month to an audience of 25,000 fans. Following the song Final Humanity, a bizarre video began playing, leading into the fan-favorite CANDY from the group’s EP SNACKTIME. For the first time in the group’s solo performance history, backup dancers joined them during the track Night Before the Exam.

Starting with Otona Blue, the members appeared clad in colorful decorations, making it seem as if they were singing on TV. The girls have an unprecedented stage presence that has helped them catapult their career forward, from obscurity to performing one of the most well-known venues in Tokyo. Happy Hormones shoed a cuter side to the girls, offering fans a glimpse beyond their usual hardcore dance moves. The audience joined in, waving their hands from side to side and flashing peace signs.

The Italian disco tune Fantastico began with slow-motion movements and added limbo dancing into the choreography, giving the members a chance to show off their comedic skills. Anyone who follows them on social media is well aware of how hilarious they can be!

Suddenly, a man dressed as a construction site security guard emerged on stage, performing an impressive rendition of the robot. This man turned out to be DJ Morley Robertson, who joined the girls in Intergalactic, starting with the members calling out “We are Bestie Girls!” As Atarashii Gakko! danced to this classic Beastie Boys tune, Robertson addressed the audience, shouting “The night is just getting started!”

Pineapple Kryptonite shows off the girl’s dancing skills, but the Pineapple Kryptonite REMIX treated fans to an acrobatic performance that brought the energy in the venue to the max.

Member MIZYU spoke to the audience about the choreography in WOO! GO!, the girl’s newest track, calling on them to join in. The members also performed the Spanish version of Free Your Mind, cementing their place as one of Japan’s most global acts. Towards the end of the live show, the members hugged and showed the audience how close they are as friends, bringing everyone to tears.

The Zepp DiverCity concert was a whirlwind of excitement and energy. Those in the audience could see how Atarashii Gakko! has improved since their debut, and everyone is excited to see how much higher they can soar going forward.

The archived video of the performance is officially available until May 29 at 23:59. Check out a comment from the group immediately after the concert below!

    Comment from Atarashii Gakko!

“This was the best live performance we’ve ever done! With our past shows, the four of us have designed everything ourselves. This time we had a lot of other people involved, and we could really feel the love from both the staff and the audience. During the show, I felt like I was having a conversation with the audience without words. I could see everyone’s faces from the beginning to the end, and it made me so happy. Each day, we interact with so many fans through social media, but being on stage in front of them is so different. We can feel how much they love us and we can really be ourselves. Just before the show started, we reminded ourselves to just have FUN! That’s why this became our best concert ever. I hope we can share all of this love and happiness on an even bigger stage next time!”

  • Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Rides Her Own Collaboration Train on Chiba’s Choushi Electric Railway

    23.May.2022 | MUSIC / SPOT

On May 18, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu traveled to Chiba to take a ride on the Kyary Train, a collaborative train currently in operation on the Choushi Electric Railway! The collaboration is part of the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project, launched to energize Japan by marketing the appeal of regional towns and cities. The singer also attended a special event celebrating the redesigned Kannon Station with Choshi mayor Shinichi Koshikawa and Choshi Electric Railway president Katsunori Takemoto in attendance.

In January, Kyary began the largest tour of her career, ‘Kyary Pamyu Pamyu 10th ANNIVERSARY JAPAN TOUR 2022 CANDY WAVE,’ with the artist performing 30 shows across Japan. In conjunction with the nationwide tour, the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project was launched, which aims to bring attention and support to local industries and to inspire more tourism to rural areas impacted negatively by the pandemic. In April, Kyary announced a collaboration with Chiba’s Choushi Electric Railway. The railway President is known for his self-deprecating jokes, noting that the railway has seen a serious lack of ridership over the last decade. Fittingly, the collaboration is based on Kyary’s hit song Mondai Girl (Problem Girl). The Kyary Train began operations on the first day of Golden Week, attracting a huge crowd. Surprisingly, the singer herself took time out of her tour to ride the train herself!

Upon arrival at the Choshi Dentetsu platform, the Kyary Train appeared, decorated with the collaboration design on the first car. Kyary, seeing the train in person for the first time, greeted it with a happy wave. Upon boarding, the interior was decorated with pink, yellow, and blue balloons inspired by the music video for Mondai Girl. “It’s so cute,” Kyary exclaimed. Other decorations placed in the train also pull from the video, including triangular accents based on Kyary’s outfit and spikes inspired by the male dancer’s hairstyles. The in-train ads feature “problematic” confessions from riders, citizens of Choushi, and Kyary herself. After a while, the departure sound plays, incorporating the phrase Mondai Girl, and the train departs. During the 21-minute ride, Kyary guided riders through the many stations, with announcements playing as the train passed by notable locales.

After the trip, the ‘Mondai ga Aru’ (There are Problems) event took place to show off the new interior of Kannon Station. Broken glass has been replaced and the interior features a light pink paint job, complete with an image of Kyary. Choshi mayor Shinichi Koshikawa and Choshi Electric Railway president Katsunori Takemoto expressed their gratitude.

“Choshi Electric Railway is often the butt of jokes, but I think it takes courage to make those jokes. It’s because the railway is so honest that people are willing to come out and help,” Kyary said. “I’ll do my best so that my music and this railway will both be loved for 100 years.”

A photo booth pulling inspiration from the press conference scene in the Mondai Girl music video has been also been added. Kyary took a seat to share details of a certain moment during Coachella that made a huge impact on her. During the second weekend performance, Kyary performed alone for the first time in her decade-long career after her dancers suffered from a sudden illness.

President Takemoto also spoke about a “problem”–too many people showed up to ride the Kyary Train during Golden Week, and the company ran out of its popular products halfway through the week! He also announced a new song, Choushi Mondai Girl, which he performed on guitar.

“If there’s a problem, this is a good opportunity to solve it. If we can overcome our problems, we can move on to the next stage. I hope that Choushi Electric Railway will continue to do its best,” Kyary said at the end of the event, inspiring warm applause from the crowd.

Be sure to check out the collaboration this spring and summer!

  • Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Collaborates with Ramen Chain Kourakuen in Fukushima

    19.May.2022 | FASHION / MUSIC / SPOT

In conjunction with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s 31-show nationwide tour celebrating her 10th anniversary, the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project was launched to energize Japan through the appeal of regional towns and cities. At each stop, Kyary collaborates with a local company to help bring more attention to smaller regions and businesses. The details of the artist’s collaboration project in Fukushima have been revealed ahead of Kyary’s performance there on May 20, 2022.

In Fukushima, Kyary is teaming up with Kourakuen, one of Japan’s leading ramen chains dating back to 1954. For this collaboration’s logo, Kourakuen’s logo has been transformed as an homage to Kyary’s 2012 song Fashion Monster. The fan-favorite track has appeared in ad campaigns and is a must-play for the singer at concerts!

Known for its tasty ramen and gyoza, Kourakuen has been a local favorite for almost 70 years. While the menu hasn’t changed too much since the early days, the chain is known for releasing some unique offerings, like chocolate Ramen on Valentine’s Day and natto miso ramen this spring.

For this collaboration, fans can grab a branded Ramen Monster Spoon, perfect for slurping up your favorite bowl of ramen.

Those who want to grab this item will want to head to the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project online store by May 29. The spoon will also be sold in limited quantities at the Iwaki Aryan Arts & Culture Exchange Center Lobby in Fukushima on May 20.

  • Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Collaborates with Akita Prefecture’s ‘a.base’ to Create New Form of Agriculture

    19.May.2022 | FOOD / MUSIC / SPOT

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of her major-label debut, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is staying active in 2022. Currently on the second half of her 30-show Japan tour to celebrate her 10th anniversary, the artist will perform a solo concert at Nippon Budokan in October. On May 15, Kyary performed in Akita, and the artist has released details about another collaboration as part of the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project, launched to energize Japan through the appeal of regional towns and cities.

In Akita, Kyary is teaming up with ‘a.base,’ founded in 2020 to “create new food based in Akita.” The company grows rice and vegetables in the very rich soil of a 30-hectare area in the Asamai district of Hirakamachi in Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, and is also engaged in the development and sales of agricultural products. This unique company was founded by a young man in his 20s–a former bank employee–with a strong desire to revitalize the local agricultural industry, which is currently facing a serious shortage of successors. Aiming to pursue a new form of agriculture, the company reached out to Kyary and the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project in the hopes that participating would spread their message to more people, inspiring the masses to learn more about agriculture as an essential and creative industry.

Immediately interested, the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project started the collaboration with an homage to Kyary’s 2013 song Mottai Night Land. In Japanese, mottainai means ‘wasteful,’ and the message for the new collaboration is that Japanese agriculture and the Akita region will go to waste if not protected.

    Mottainai to Rice (300g/5kg)

    Collaboration T-shirt

A collaborative product available in original packaging, Mottainai to Rice is Akitakomachi rice grown in-house in Asamai Hirakamachi, Yokote City, Akita Prefecture. Grown under special cultivation standards, all pesticides and chemical fertilizers are halved compared to conventional growing methods.

A collaborative T-shirt is also on sale featuring the new logo and the singer’s 10th-anniversary logo. Grab it at the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project website by May 27!

  • The Appeal of Rising Gen-Z Singer ASA Wu, Reaching People’s Hearts with her Music

    16.May.2022 | FEATURES / MUSIC

Trilingual Gen-Z singer ASA Wu is a rising star. The artist has roots in Taiwan and Japan, and the gap between her powerful voice and cute baby face is attracting attention from both the music industry and other creative fields. Since the release of her debut song Bloomer in April 2021, she has continued to gain momentum, debuting her first EP omen alongside the music video for MO-MO, a sexy electronic dance hit making waves worldwide.

ASA Wu’s highly-anticipated new single Uncolor was released on April 8, 2022, and is currently being featured as a part of the Artiswitch anime project. Artiswitch, a collaborative anime series made by SUNRISE (Mobile Suit Gundam, Love Live!) and ASOBISYSTEM, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s agency, premiered on YouTube on May 28, 2021. The series brings together a wide range of content pulling from fashion, art, and music trends, especially those found in Harajuku.

MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON recently sat down with Asa Wu to chat about her career, her charm, and to get a closer look at her true self.

The Artist’s Early Interest in Music

“I’ve been singing since I was a kid. I’d sing at home and put on shows by myself. When we’d sit down for dinner, I’d tell my parents I was going to put on a dinner show. When I lived in Taiwan, before I’d go to bed, I’d ask my grandma to listen to me. But honestly, the praise I got didn’t mean much to me as a little girl. I knew a lot of kids who would do their best to help around the house just to get praise, but for me? I just wanted to make everyone happy by singing.” ―ASA WU

ASA Wu’s journey into the world of music began early in her childhood. As a young girl, she was overjoyed to see her family enjoying her singing, inspiring her to chase a music career. Her family remains her primary motivation to this day. Her voice has a warm quality to it, and it’s clear when speaking to ASA Wu that singing comes naturally to her.

    Music and ASA Wu

“This might be cliche, but if I had to describe music to myself, I’d say “NO MUSIC, NO LIFE.” It’s like, when I’m sad or stressed, what do I do? Everyone has their own ways to clear their mind or destress, but for me, it’s only music. Music is easy–it can instantly change your mood. It can make you feel happy, it can motivate you. Just listening is such a simple thing to do, but it can really change your behavior and your actions. That’s what I aim to do for people with my music.”

    ―ASA WU

For ASA Wu, music is akin to life itself. No matter what troubles or challenges life brings, music is there. Music can conquer stress and offer clarity when her emotions are muddled. When writing lyrics, the singer defaults to taking an emotional approach, drawing inspiration from characters in the stories she writes in her head, or from the life lessons she writes in her notebook each day. Through her music, Wu wants to share feelings that people may have never been able to express before. Just as music has supported her, she only wants her music to support others.

    Uncolor Music Video

    About the New Track, Uncolor

During the songwriting process for her new track Uncolor, Wu decided to express a world in which darkness and light coexist, utilizing an already-created story and beat. The singer says that her favorite lines in the song are “Feeling Sad, you were in that lonely-colored sky,” and “No matter the color, I can’t see the Night Sky.” When asked why, the singer responded candidly.

“The sky at night may look black, but depending on the state of a person’s mind, it could really look like any color. I just put that thought into words. In the lyrics, I also included the phrase “my friends,” because I wanted to reach out to everyone on earth. We’re all friends.”

During the recording, Wu was conscious of how she could share her feelings through her singing voice. The thought inspired her to darken the room in the hopes that her song could add color to it.

Uncolor is a collaboration between ASA Wu and NANCY SNAKE, an illustrator known for her psychedelic pop worldview that combines realism and romanticism. The collab was made for the ongoing Artiswitch project.

For ASA Wu, collaboration is a means of discovery, where each artist’s individual colors overlap to create something completely new. She also sees it as an encounter with another self–someone new, born from working with another person. Expectations are high for Wu going forward after seeing how much progress she has made as an artist already.

“I hope that I can convey with my voice what I want to convey with my music, and what I feel like so many of my listeners also want to convey to the world,” the singer said to those who have listened to her songs.

“When I read messages from fans, I really try to understand what they’re thinking. I often empathize with their emotions, and I want to put those emotions into my music,” Wu says. “I want people to hear my songs and think “wow, I’m so glad ASA sang this!” I hope to become an artist worthy of all of this praise, and I want people to be glad that they supported me. Look forward to what’s coming next!” The artist finished the interview with a wide smile.

ASA Wu has already inspired an army of fans with her Gen-Z outlook, warm vocals, and one-of-a-kind sound. Try taking a deep breath while listening to her new song Uncolor. Maybe there’s a message in there for you.

In conjunction with the nationwide tour, the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project was launched to energize Japan through the appeal of regional towns and cities and has been attracting major attention. Kyary’s newest collaboration in Yamagata has been announced ahead of her concert there on May 13!

The singer will be collaborating with Shelter Nanyo Hall in Nanyo, Yamagata, a small town of only around 30,000 people. The hall is the world’s largest wooden concert hall, made entirely from laminated local cedar. It uses the most advanced fire-resistant technology for wood in Japan and was certified as the world’s largest by Guinness World Records in December 2015. The multi-functional hall can seat over 1,400 people, and the property also features a Japanese-style tea room, meeting rooms, an open tree-growing space, and more.

“I want the local population to be incredibly proud of this magnificent wooden structure,” said Norihito Shimanuki, the hall’s director. “Through this concert hall, we’d like to promote Nanyo and Yamagata Prefecture both domestically and internationally.”

The collaboration logo for the newest partnership was inspired by the ‘KPP NANDA COLLECTION LIVE in HAWAII’ visual. The one-night-only concert was held in July 2014. Since the main focus of this team-up is ‘wood,’ the visual’s palm tree has been transformed into a cedar tree!

A collaborative T-shirt is also on sale featuring the new logo and the singer’s 10th-anniversary logo. The shirt is available on the LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project website for two weeks only starting May 12. Support Japanese businesses and pick one up while you can!

  • Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Announces First Solo Budokan Appearance in Six Years Following Success at Coachella

    10.May.2022 | MUSIC

In April 2022, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu performed at the world’s largest music festival Coachella, held in California. Following this incredible moment in her career, the singer played a solo concert at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. American fans were thrilled to see her return to the states after three years, with any overseas performances canceled due to the pandemic.

During the most recent stop on her domestic tour, Kyary announced that she would be performing a solo concert at Nippon Budokan for the first time in six years. The concert will be the final stop on the singer’s 10th-anniversary tour and will be held on October 19, 2022.

The announcement was made on May 7, the first day of the second half of Kyary’s current tour. The LINE CUBE SHIBUYA in Tokyo housed the singer upon her return from the states and tickets were sold out with fans excited to see what beloved tracks the Harajuku symbol would perform!

The setlist for the performance featured highlights from Kyary’s decade-long career. The artist performed Candy Racer from her new album; Invader Invader, a current smash-hit on TikTok; the ever-popular Harajuku Iyahoi; the Halloween anthem Crazy Party Night ~Pumpkins Strike Back~; and Gentenkaihi, the track celebrating Kyary’s special anniversary.

During the MC portion of the performance, Kyary shared details of a certain moment during Coachella that made a huge impact on her. The singer was concerned that no one would show up to her concert, as she was scheduled to perform at the same time as global stars Billie Eilish and 21 Savage.

“Kyary, it’ll be fine,” one of her dancers said. “We’ll be on stage together. You’re not alone, so go out there and do what you always do!” Such a powerful message brought Kyary to tears.

During the second weekend performance, Kyary performed alone for the first time in her decade-long career after her dancers suffered from a sudden illness. She wrote their initials on her hands during her set to keep them with her. She emotionally thanked the audience for coming and said that she would not have been able to perform if the fans hadn’t given her the strength to do so.

Starting with a show in Yamagata on May 13, Kyary will tour 16 more cities around Japan. She will then perform at the Second Sky Music Festival hosted by Porter Robinson at the end of October in the U.S. Her world tour, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu 10th ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR CANDY WAVE, will start in November.

Advance tickets for the Budokan concert will be available to fan club members until May 16. The official website will begin general sales on May 20.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is staying active in 2022. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of her major label debut, the artist recently performed at Coachella, one of the largest music festivals in the United States. On October 21, 2021, she released her first full-length album in three years, ‘Candy Raver.’ In January, Kyary embarked on the largest tour of her career, ‘Kyary Pamyu Pamyu 10th ANNIVERSARY JAPAN TOUR 2022 CANDY WAVE,’ which will see the singer performing 30 shows across Japan.

In conjunction with the nationwide tour, the “LOCAL POWER JAPAN Project” was launched to energize Japan through the appeal of regional towns and cities, and has been attracting major attention. Announced earlier this month at the singer’s performance in Chiba, the Kyary Train finally set out on the Choushi Electric Railway starting April 29.

On April 1, Choushi Electric Railway president Katsunori Takemoto tweeted out something strange and hilarious: “Choushi Electric Railway has tons of problems, so we’ll change our name to Choushi Warui (‘In Bad Shape’) Railway starting today.” The self-deprecating post is on brand for the railway which is known for struggling with a lack of riders over the past decade. Social media blew up following the tweet, with many wondering if it was simply a poor April Fool’s Joke. Shortly after, a collaboration image between the railway and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s popular track Mondai Girl appeared. Commemorative versions of a one-day ticket for the train line are on sale now.

It was also announced that a fully-decorated collaborative train would begin running in late April, though the president remarked that the number of interior decorations would depend entirely on how much the company could fit into the budget. Of course, following this plea, support began pouring in from all over Japan. Now, the entire staff, including one new employee, is ready to welcome guests. Each ticket will come with a sticker, on which is written the president’s heartfelt plea: “I want the Kyary Train to run without any issues!” So far, so good.

The collaborative train is called the ‘Kyary Train with Plenty of Problems,’ and takes place inside a flashy pink train perfectly encapsulating the singer’s image.

Inside the train car, guests are transported into the world of the Mondai Girl music video. Pink, yellow, and blue balloons fill the space, with plenty of other homages present. The ads on display on the train are also full of confessions by Choushi Electric Railway staff, Choushi City residents, and Kyary, regarding their individual problems.

While the collab train is running, riders are encouraged to write a message of support on the right half of the sticker and post it on a special board to be erected at Kannon Station on April 18.

“I would like to renovate the old and problem-filled Kannon Station into Kyary Station,” president Takemoto said recently. He is also looking into erecting a photo booth pulling inspiration from the press conference scene in the Mondai Girl music video while cleaning up the area to draw in new customers. Be sure to check out the collaboration this spring and summer!
